Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. I believe this was another cast off a friend sent me in the mail a long time ago. I honestly don't know what to make if this...it could be anything from hard Americana rock to nu-metal to folksy pop rock or even a emo-prog based band. I'm going to go with the idea that it is somewhere in the middle of all that...general hardish rock, trying to be more complex than it is worth. Not a big fan of the logo for the band name, and seems out of place or alien when compared to the classical album name.

Album Review: From the get go, the band is channeling hair metal, with clear vocals with a calculated lilt. This is timeless in a sense, as it would not be out of place with the Slaughters or Warrants of the late 80's or Animal Bags or Candleboxes of the 90's, leading through the Nu-Metal scene of the aughts. This doesn't mean it is good, at all. The vocal range is impressive, though, with parts in whisper and hitting Muse or Ours melodic heights.

The name comes from India, meaning eternal knowledge. They hold the factoid for being the #1 unsigned Myspace band in the fall of 2005, which was shortly after their move to LA from Brooklyn, but moved back to Long Island later that same year. They have been on a couple big festival tours as well as being in television promos and shows (NCIS, Prison Break, Terminator: SC Chronicles, The Hills, Girls of Hedsor Hall).

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of Tinfed, but somehow, probably through a friend ridding himself of some unwanted CDs, I got 3 of their discography. It shows growth from album to album in design and procedure of liner notes, but i still don't know what they sound like, except they apparently all program instruments, on top of the basic guitar drums and bass. From the design, i get the impression that they are sorta like Fuel, with a more tech-centric approach. Nu Metal and pop is my guess based on the last album's band photo.

Album Review: The first album takes a page of NIN's playbook with emotive, screaming vocals in parts and an electro-techno-industrial rock sound with dialogue snippets imbedded in the music. It would be easy to imagine this being on the Crow soundtrack. Hypersonic continues the seemingly experimental industrial-via-electro-clash style and adds to it with dentistry noise. even with a creepy, cavernous ambient instrumental "Unfamiliar," followed by a remix of Disjointed called "Dis-Jungle." which doubles down on the clanging and industrial Stomp. Throw in a song titled Insulin- an unrepresented subject within pop music, and "Wait Suspension," which has a similar base line to Bjork's "Army of Me," and you have a building, dark-techno-wave follow-up.

The third album, from the first note is more straight forward radio alternative produced. The vocals are melodic, not shouty, and the guitars are more prevalent, and the industrial tek is missing. It sounds a bit like Bush with a whiny, Jamiroquai vocal set. Although there is the song Halo, which employs a very NIN style synth and similar vocals. It seems to be an homage/tribute/ripoff of them.

Their height came right before their 2000 major label debut, as they got their single "Immune" on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. Many critics at the time felt they may have had their best years in front of them when they were at the end of their career.

Album Rating (1-10): 5.0

Members & Other Bands:

  • Sam Rizzetta - Hammered Dulcimer, Fretted Dulcimer, Concertina (Madeline MacNeil, Blackie Cool, Maggie Sansone)
  • Paul Reisler - Bass Dulcimer, Guitar (A Thousand Questions, Kid Pan Alley, Three Good Reasons, John McCutcheon, Holly Near, Si Kahn, Beth Nielsen Chapman)
  • Pete Vigour - Dulcimer, Banjo, Pennywhistle, Vox (Albemarie Ramblers, Hubie King, Diane Jones, Erynn Marshall)

  • Sarah Gregory - Bass, Recorder (Flying Shoes, All Comers Band
  • Lydia Mills - Fiddle (Arlington Street Women's Caucus)
  • Bill "Smitty" Smith - Banjo
  • Rosie III - dulcimer on cover

Unknown-ness: I honestly don't know if this is a band or an album of random songs just played on a Trapezoid/dulcimer, or just some completion with cool cover art and font...because it is a VERY cool cover and font. Seeing the pics on the back & reading the notes, I imaging it is all instrumentals, of old time folk played on old time instruments, the dulcimer spotlighted. It looks like the "finger harp" we used to strum & play in elementary school music class. reading more of the back, the band makes their own instruments, including these dulcimers, so this might be pretty cool.

Album Review: Well, the description was not wrong, the instrument makers definitely have a knack for old tyme folk music going back to the Renaissance period. The range of their designed hammered dulcimers is quite good, as they themselves forged bass & piccolo dulcimers to fit the range of music in a full band.

Paul Reisler has been the one constant musician, with Sam Rizzetta perhaps being prolific / famous in his own right; still making instruments and recording albums (2020). Reisler has seen the band through many personnel changes, and played as Trapezoid for 25 years through 1995, reuniting in 2004 with their 1984 line-up. This is their first album. I read a little more and it seems Sarah Gregory and Bill Smith got married, and were together up to her passing in 2020.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But from the straight line cover of a military force taking on a robot attack, i imagine it is some sort of futuristic electro hard core or political minded indie punk with synthesizers.

Album Review: So i was way out of my league when I put this record on. It reminds me a little of Manuel Gottsching with the synthetic repetitive house/techno sound, with the big exception is that this album has a chill reggae dub vibe. It is mostly instrumental, and the repetitive hooks and grooves are slow and deliberate. I've read they are the house band for their label, Ariwa, and support artist like Lee "Scratch" Perry. Mad Professor is by far the biggest name related to this band, and he is one of the pioneers bringing dub into the digital age, which is more than apparent on this album.

Unknown-ness: I have heard of them, but i know not what they are like...from the artwork ( i do like how the initials PWEI make up the 5 "monsters" attacking the biohazard clock in the middle), and mention of BPMS on the back, i imagine some sort of future-techno EDM band, but for some reason, i think they may sound like Nitzer Ebb or Low Pop Suicide or Stabbing Westward...maybe part of the industrial KMFDM / Front 242 genre, which is not a reach from the formerly listed bands.

Album Review: This one required some research, as the style of music had an origin in the UK and is called Grebo Rock, a subculture and genre, adopted from a slang term for long hair bikers and/or rock music fans in the late 80's. When grunge and brit pop took hold in the early - mid 90's PWEI was shuffled over to the Industrial sub-genre, but they were a posterband for the Grebo niche. Their big trivia bit is that they were the first Western independent band invited to play the Soviet Union in 1988. The songs on this album are similar to the back of the album: a collage of bits and pieces strung together with samples, turntables and beats that bear a strong association with cold, mechanical industrial sounds. Sometimes the vocals have melody, sometimes, they are like an Eastern European cold wave rap. Def Con One uses samples of "Funky Town" and "The Twilight Zone" among a string of other musical borrows. They are still around, as a 2020 tour was planned in NZ, alas, everything was postponed Mar/April to Oct, so maybe?

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Steve Khan. I like the artwork, reminds me of native american art with a lot of energy thanks to the arrows. My guess is this is overthought, conceptual new wave, but an act that had a good sound at the same time.

Album Review: So this is jazz fusion, akin to Brand X or many dentist office soundtracks or elevators, even. Maybe some 80's tv shows that never made it out of pilot status. Khan is recognized for his groundbreaking expertise in Latin Jazz Guitar work and received two Grammy nominations. He called this album the last attempt to keep the sound of fellow contributors, the Breker Brothers' band going.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. I remember picking this up off the wall of an Oxfam over in the UK on honeymoon, not knowing what it was, but hoping it was some Psychedelic British 60's band I was about to discover.

Album Review: Well, this is a UK pressing of the record, but the band is american, from Santa Cruz. Similar to The Happenings, they repackaged older songs and gave them their own personal touch to their covers. But unlike Happenings, this album is lighter and feels about 10 years older than Psycle, like an archaic Baroque pop vocal style. Their biggest it was covering Simon & Garfunkel's 59th Street Bridge Song a year before this album in 1967. There is a certain Pet Shop Boys quality to the "ahhh" chant in the chorus of "Mad" as well as a Belle & Sebastian vibe to the trumpet melody.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the album art work of very busy collage of art, font, and diorama knickknacks, they seem like a busy scattered band. And the back artwork screams hippie alternative, albeit, a good 5 years before it was all over MTV. But let's stick with a guess of classic rock hippie-ish music with feedback and sloppy, purposeful play.

Album Review: Well, the album is all over the place. With roots in Cow-Punk, their country tinged funk and classic rock wobbles and grooves all over the place, with eccentric vocals that transform from guttural growls to high aggressive chants and quiet reserved thoughtfulness in the same 20 seconds. I wouldn't quite call it a dynamic range, but it is definitely an eclectic range of style choices. They started in 1983, but if they shifted their time frame just 5 years later, they could have been huge in the 90's-Alt scene with singer Nicholls' look, attitude, and the band's blending of genre...just too ahead of their time,

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, and i'll be honest: the year 1986 made me quite hesitant to buy this, as much of this has the production styling of dead drums and one-dimensional synth smoothness. But i do like a good female fronted band, so i wanted to give this band a try. I'm still expecting adult contemporary pop with the bad late 80's production sound.

Album Review: And the sound is spot on...i still can't imagine what people were thinking when these studio albums came back and sounded like they were created entirely digitally without a soul. The band started in 1981, and enjoyed success with many singles, their biggest was Heaven (top 5 hit). Grace Knight and Bernie Lynch (he asked her, his then girlfriend, eventually short-lived wife, to be in his band Living Single as it was before a words-out-of-a-hat name change, (there was another Living Single)) still perform together as the Eurogliders as of 2018.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of the band. Not much to go on with the cover, name, and lack of year/song titles on the back. So i'm guessing it's something minimal, no wave perhaps?

Album Review: At first listen, the album is all feedback noise and sludgy bass...it took me a couple listens to recall that there were vocals. But with more listens (perhaps just a closer listen), reveals some beauty to the chaos. Labeled as Psych music, most of the reviews label the record as driving, drudging, sludgey, heavy. All agreed. The two friends from Australia and NYC drummer only put out this one record. Part of the Lost Bitches song reminds me of Belly's mystical nightscape songs. Otherwise, I don't have much knowledge of other bands to relate here.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover art is exactly what many of today's island synth pop artists are going for. But for 1983, this is going to be some synthetic yacht rock

Album Review: Somewhere between and on a different plane than Lionel Ritchie's All Night Long and Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry Be Happy sits this slick, over produced set of adult contemporary sexy-mood setting tracks. None of it is really that good to want to put on to enjoy. It fails in the mass studio synthesization of music down to the bone, where nothing organic or raw can live. There may be talent in this group, but the glossy sheen on the one dimensional sound loses interest quite fast. Their first album, one before this one, contained the song they were most famous for, and never reached that peak again...Pauli Carman keeps the band going with s revolving cast and is still active (2020)

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks quite promising. Like the action in the font, and the capture of the rainbow light burst through the pane of glass also possesses a lot of energy. The photo on the back looks like a bunch of confident beardy dudes who might produce some good, fun music.

Album Review: Boy was I wrong, this album is not really my thing, so it's hard to write a short, straight critique when the bar was set high...and for a different "sport" (genre) altogether. Not much info on them, thanks to a hard-to-track SEO name. But the songs feel like either 80's tv show themes or mid-tempo video game scores (thinking Sonic in the Chaos Emerald Bonus stage). Track 2 has vocals, and it is slightly funky, maybe even a little Talking Heads-ish, if they had made music for a furniture outlet.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of Max, and don't know it its a band name or just one person. I like the color scheme and artwork with bold pockets of color, but it really does not shed light on what is to come on this record. Assuming it's one guy, i imagine singer songwritery stuff, and i don't see much new wave or power pop influence from the album art, but I could be wrong.

Album Review: Max, or Max Carl, or Max Gronenthal has been a singer & songwriter for his whole life, bouncing around Nebraska and Midwest bands, landing in some bigger bands like 32 Special and more recently Grand Funk Railroad. He is also responsible for scoring and writing songs for some films. He has worked on Spring Break and Police Academy, and his song plays over the closing credits of Short Circuit. Musically, this album is quite light. Despite having an R&B background, this breezy set of songs, West Coast AOR, lacks any memorable trait. At times, the R&B soes try to come out, but the production is so Easy Listening, that you could easily miss it.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this singer/songwriter, but he looks weathered, and confident, so my guess is the tracks will be thoughtful countrified (cowboy hat) versions of hit songs.

Album Review: I did not know he was the famous hall of fame lead singer of the Hollies and childhood friend/bandmate with Graham Nash. The songs are light, almost like a band that would play for a 40th wedding anniversary or retirement party. But Clarke is still recording, despite taking time off from medical problems with his vocal chords, but he released a new album in 2019.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. Based on their name, I assume it is has an adult contemporary sound, with attention to genres that have specific dances, be it Cha-Cha, Foxtrot, Salsa, Mambo, etc. However, the artwork shows a group of four, slightly hipper guys that are trying to look cool, but come off as a bunch of parents trying on their kid's stylistic clothes. They are tapping into the popular-at-the-time idea of animation, but also the popularity of arcade games, further trying to adapt to a youthful culture. I imagine this to be some very light AM radio music trying to fit into a New Wave world.

Album Review: For having some musical greats...or at least folks that worked beside musical greats (Santana, Hall & Oats, Billy Joel, Joe Jackson) , this is a light forgettable album whispy and floating radio pop with nothing that seems challenging or deep. There are some lofty island jams, and musician's musician performances, so i can see why there was comparison to the police. Many of the songs are repetitive and irritating, basically good fodder for advertisements. There are not really any good tracks, but the title track at least has some fun dated lyrics about arcades and computers.

Unknown-ness: At the time of purchase, one of my earlier TSM buys, I had not heard of them. But I expected this to be a folky vocal group, similar to We Five, which I had already bought & listened to. Was hoping for a tinge of Herman's Hermits or other upbeat fun music, but not expecting too much of that.

Album Review: As expected, this is a collection of folky vocal group songs, that comes close to church choir quality. Some of the banjo-folk arrangement, like This Land is Your Land push them to the realm of country. And although the harmonies are strong, and the vocals are well highlighted, the overall style is a little tedious and very dated to my opinion.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. From the looks of the band pictures and album artwork, looks like it will be glammy power pop. To me, the name feels a little embarrassing, but I want to see if the artwork's mood is an interpretation of the music, or if it is just a stylized theme.

Album Review(s): Sniff ‘n’ the Tears was started at drummer Luigi’s request, asking Paul Roberts to join him after hearing promise in some demos they recorded together. Their first track on the first album was a huge success in the US and less so in the UK due to a production error. But Driver Seat kept Roberts in the spot light time, and time again, as it was used in a 1991 Dutch auto commercial, and in 1997’s Boogie Nights. Roberts was the only continuous member throughout the history, even painting the majority of the artwork himself. Although they never found the same success as the first album, Roberts still uses the moniker along with his own solo material to this day.

~“Driver's Seat” was a huge single, reaching #15 in the US. The keyboard and harmonized chorus feel like disco, while the electric guitar is buzzy in the background. The lead vocals are nasally, but in an abrasive way, that feels like they’re sung through a sneer. The song has a disco shuffle tempo, too
“New Lines On Love” has story telling vocals of a typical singer/songwriter, like a more melodic Bob Dylan. The music is dark, shuffling back alley music, and a little jangly. It has the harmonized backing vocals that echo the lead in the chorus.
“Carve Your Name on My Door” begins with the title sang/spoke instrument-free. The song has a southern rock / country sense; honky-tonk rock, perhaps. The vocals sound light and airy, with the same sneer, reminding me of Dave Edmunds and Steve Forbert.
“This Side of the Blue Horizon” is slower, and with the piano in the beginning, is basically a piano ballad with some twang. It is pretty slow and tedious, and the only energetic moments are countrified.
“Sing” is another slinky, back alley bluesy pub song with a shuffle strut.
“Rock N' Roll Music” is decidedly more oldies-style rock and roll. The vocals echo more, as if they are being sung at an indoor pool, and feel like a quiet afterthought. The production falls flat on an otherwise energetic song.

“Fight For Love” begins with an acoustic guitar, and continues down a light groove, reminding me of the little I know of the Grateful Dead. The harmonized chorus punctuate the lyrics in the chorus with the song title.
“The Thrill of it All” takes a jazzy, bluesy tone. It is general 70’s AOR, or dad rock.
“Slide Away” has a bit more electronic, prog rock feel. It is more mystical and spacey. Some of the instrumentation reminds me of Ween hippy jams.
“Last Dance” is a slow folk song, reminding me of Rod McKuen, and a little Dylan with the vocal style. There is only an acoustic guitar for support.
“Looking For You” begins after a cymbal hit, and a slow, methodical jam begins. It gently glides along in a wafty drug dream state.

*“The Game's Up” picks right up where the previous album left off with the specific kind of light 70’s rock. It must be the right mindset to mellow out and listen to this while stoned. It has an organ and other jazzy elements. But the chorus is standard catchy pop.
“Moment of Weakness” is a bit bouncier, and upbeat. And it has minimal, jazzy instrumentation. The verses are sung a bit faster than usual. The song sounds like an 80’s sitcom theme song (Full House).
“What Can Daddy Do?” has a tinge of reggae vibe. It sounds like a cheesy Caribbean all-inclusive resort’s house band.
“Night Life” is a beatnik poem set to incidental sound effects, like a single person performance art monologue. The music kicks in to be a dark, back alley style song for the chorus, but returns to the monologue again for the verse.  The instrumental section is a whining guitar, played upscale to a final scream at the end.
“If I Knew Then” starts with jangly guitar, and sitcom horns, as if from MASH. The bass line is jazzy, but the song is casual and light. There are synth effects used in the song, but they come off like a starter kit, like the synth box was just opened, and the couple of effects used were from the first trial setting. Also, everyone else is using a synth on their hit records, so they wanted to too. It reminded me of the segment music from the science spoof show “Look Around You.”

“One Love” borrows some synth elements, but is mostly a stripped down bluesy lite rock song. In the instrumental section, the electric guitar answers the synth hook in conversation, and they go back and forth. The song ends with a skittering drum and rhythm guitar combo, and fades out.
“Five & Zero” continues with the light, sparse songs, with a reflective tone. There is not much energy to the music; it is basically non-threatening, relaxation rock, almost like a demo of what could be a power pop song.
“Poison Pen Mail” takes another minimal music, folksy spoken lyric route. The organ is the only music in support for a while, but is then added to with a guitar that uses a couple notes as lyrics to the song. This too feels like a fragment, or an unfinished song. More elements are added as the song progresses, and it fills out some, but it feels like a cheap, radio friendly, dumbed down cover of a Tom Waits song.
“Rodeo Drive” starts with a variety of jazzy synth effects, not really finding a melody or cohesion until the swirling and fading synth notes are held, forming melodies and guitars pick up some of the weight. The song is an odd composition, throwing a lot of elements at the walls to see if anything sticks. Not everything works, and it definitely does not all fit together, but for a creative album ending track, it offers inspiration for things that may be investigated on the next album. At its heart, is a jazzy, free-form composition, tidied together by a general vocal melody. The end of the track draws back, and gives the theatrical situation of the listener changing channels while in their car.
