Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band...and since i only have the CD, there is not much to go buy. From the song names and the band name, plus year this was released, they sound like a made-for-tv metal band, like something that would have appeared on Married With Children. I know Andy Wallace's name from Faith No More producing and other bands of that type, so perhaps hair metal is spot on. And spacing matters with this band...as they are not the Radioactive Cats, they are Radio Active...as if they are dudes who are active on the radio.

Album Review: The songs are a touch southern roots rock while singing about metal themes of women, love on the run, and roses. The songs are not that threatening, but i wonder if that is just time and the genre pushing the bar up since 1991 that makes it sound almost quaint. "Knock Knock" sounds like a metal singer fronting Cake, which is strangely enjoyable. They suffered the wrong band at the wrong time syndrome, as Alt-Grunge was picking up speed just as they were releasing this debut. Not entirely hair band metal and not classic rock inspired grunge at all, their cover-all-basis music made them a band that was stopped before it started

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks quite interesting...i mean the album name is quite juvinile, as are the photos of stuffed animals with instruments. However, the two members are two older, middle aged men. There is a quote of praise from Parents Magazine (and Newsweek), so maybe this is designed for little kids.

Album Review: Wow. I don't think i've ever heard anything more embarrassing. Not really sure who this is for, or who would actually think about buying this for themselves or their kids. It is just awful style representations of rock, "rap (which sounds closer to Devo)" pop, vaudevillian country, with lyrics that try to relate to young children or present motivational anecdotes. One can only hope there were all only good intentions with this duo, as they do have a 9+ album discography (and i've only seen positive reviews and praise, so that's great to discover). Still,  I hope this was no child's first experience with music. One of their songs was picked up and played on Captain Kangaroo in the mid 70's, and from there, they transitioned from an adult act to a kids act, moving from NYC to VT. When their popularity waned in 1993, they split ways and performed solo-ly independently, only reuniting once as a benefit for an ailing Rosen in 2005. He passed away in 2007 from ALS. Shontz focused more on environmental education in music, and made his solo career almost completely void of Rosen. As they invited kids to their shows to bring their favorite teddy bears in the audience, it should be no surprise that their big hit was Teddy Bears' Picnic, which even became an emmy nominated video.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But from the straight line cover of a military force taking on a robot attack, i imagine it is some sort of futuristic electro hard core or political minded indie punk with synthesizers.

Album Review: So i was way out of my league when I put this record on. It reminds me a little of Manuel Gottsching with the synthetic repetitive house/techno sound, with the big exception is that this album has a chill reggae dub vibe. It is mostly instrumental, and the repetitive hooks and grooves are slow and deliberate. I've read they are the house band for their label, Ariwa, and support artist like Lee "Scratch" Perry. Mad Professor is by far the biggest name related to this band, and he is one of the pioneers bringing dub into the digital age, which is more than apparent on this album.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but from the logo/font, hairstyles and their clothes, plus being on Buddah Records, I imagine it will be some Psych/Bublegum Pop

Album Review: The Road, as shortened / updated form of their previous name Mellow Brick Rode, was a band of solid musicians who made their own arrangements on other people's songs for the most part (3 tracks are written by band members). Their arrangement of the Zombie's "She's Not There" was their biggest hit, making top 40 lists in and around their home of Buffalo NY. They never toured further than Massachusetts, per direction from their management, but their reach was across the country. The were comfortable being an ever-present act in the Buffalo area. They had one more album after this one for Kama Sutra records, and after that were then were not a band for many years like an on/off light switch with a revolving door of members. There is brass present on this record, but no mention of who played on it with a credit(s).

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this singer. But it looks really mod, and hippie with a strong foothold in the Dollywood country south. So oldie, catchy country pop is my guess.

Album Review: There is a lot of pop, catchy melodies, and slightly psych production to fit into the 60's mod sound, but there is also the same amount of country/gospel bluesy swagger to the songs, and Riley's vocals are versatile enough to easily handle both sounds. In 1968, she won the Grammy award for best female country vocal performance on Harper Valley PTA, which held the #1 Billboard spot for both pop & country and spawned movies and tv series, along with a major network variety show for her. Due to the content of the song: a widowed mother who dated and dressed in the 60's mini skit and go go boots style responded to a hypocritical PTA who judged her style negatively, she herself was pressured to match that style against her personal comfort. In the late 70's she became born-again and focused her recordings on gospel music. The songs on here were written by an array of people from Margaret Lewis & Myra Smith (4 tracks), Merle Haggard "Okie From Muskogee" and even Gary US Bonds + Swamp Dogg: Jerry Williams Jr "To The Other Woman," which is kind of a companion piece to her Harper Valley PTA single. Before she moved to Nashville, just out of high school, her four year marriage produced a daughter, Kim, in 1966, who later would accompany her on stage, singing back up, touring with her, and trying out her own career as Riley Coyle.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. This was one of the first TSM albums i got, so finally getting to the later letters. Per the promo sticker four of the first five tracks were potential singles. I like the sleek logoed "7," looking like a racing stripe, pasted on the black background. Simple, clean design, futuristic and mysterious with a little dangerous intensity. The band photo on the back, layered over the same logo gives a cold, archaic feel. I'm hoping the music taps into the future electronic aspects of the artwork, and this is a fun synth heavy new wave album.

Album Review: This is a very weird album. On one hand, there are a lot of fun time signatures and driving songs with keys and cold war synth effects. But on the other hand, the guitar and vocals are like a typical greasy, back alley Miami Vice power pop band of the 80's. Point in fact, their single "Heartbeat" found its way to be on Miami Vice (as well as 1986's film Manhunter).  And "Less Than Perfect" is featured in one of my favorite childhood films, Explorers. But back to the band: imagine Steve Perry fronting the Residents on the song "No Sorry" or occasionally sounding like Devo on "Let Me Use You" - but i would not classify that as their overall sound. "This Dark Hour" has a strong Police vibe. Mike Rutherford was a big help to the band on their first record, and he would have produced their second if it were not for his touring schedule with Genesis- a decision forced by MCA that ultimately led to the demise of the band under the forced misguided pressure from the label and production team.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. Was gifted the album by a friend cleaning out stuff he didn't listen to, saying he got this because of Lou Barlow's bass contribution (but it is not the same Lou Barlow as Sebadoh / Dino Jr). I like the clean design, simple coloring, lots of neutral space and British army imagery, which all reminds me of Wire. I figure the music will be simple, minimal, but catchy in the realm of post punk or politically active high-brow new wave.

Album Review: There is a lot of Clash and Police influence in this record, with snotty, nasally vocals sounding like Simon Le Bon much of the time. The special ingredient that made the band unique was Hallam's upbringing in South Africa, which brought a different influence on his guitar playing that gave the band somewhat of a sunny African rhythm and nature. They had 2 big breaks of having their first single played prominently on the John Peel program and opening for the Smiths (including a headlining spot on occasion when Morrissey was too troubled to play a show). They were politically motivated, supporting left wing causes and adopted an anti-corporate ideology. They self-released their material, but Kidd left the band 2 months after this albums release, and they only lasted another 2 years without him before disbanding.

Just from the cover + band name, i imagine this to be a mid 80's jangle pop band, where the name is full of energy, but the cover looks like middle america, and the back band photo on the railroad tracks with pastel highlighted clothing furthers the working man's band, complete with bolo tie and the 80's fad Pretty in Pink Duckie hat.

Album Review: So rather than jangle pop, this midwestern (Pittsburgh might as well be the midwest), this college rock band accents heavily on the slide country guitar, and american working class mentality. Aside from looking like extras from Pretty in Pink a year before its release (Podrasky was dating & had a child with Molly Ringwalks older sister, Beth), they actually were in the film (as well as Beverly Hills 90210, where Podrasky had a brief relationship with Shannon Doherty). They also touch on Roots Rock and Rockabilly ("In My Gremlin"), and their moody "Radio" reminds me of James in parts. There have been a couple incarnations of the band, as members gathered and fell off as Podrasky moved from Pitts to LA back to Pitts and then back to LA. This main and steadiest version is the band happened after Podrasky's second move LA where he worked in the mailroom of A&M records along  with the other 3 members.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the packaging is odd, as you flip the record over, not from right to left to correctly view the back. From the cover art work, and the ransom letter font on the side A Front, and the multicultural + bagpipe cover on the back, i want to believe this is some interesting indie punk, but i believe it will be more college radio, jangley rock, based on the year.

Album Review: This is straight up instrumental, bagpipe heavy jazzy soundscapes. There is a little Asian influence and some middle eastern theme in the music too, so it does not always just carry a Celtic feel. On this record Marvin's March & Dee Dee... are both homages to African American culture. Most of the songs feel like jigs and ceremonial songs. The instrumentation is mostly performed on old world devices. They continued to divert to alternate directions, and after this album and the departure of two members, they headed into the direction of Jazz Fusion.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover is a painting, which could mean really anything, but it errs to the side of educated, and the back photo looks like the Men they Couldn't Hang or Dexy's Midnight Runners...hoping for the Dexys style, rather than the bland soundscape

Album Review: Holy cow are most of these songs terrible! "Big Fat Blonde" and "Government Cheese" are incredibly embarrassing. The style is almost a Celtic jangle pop meets light cow punk with, to me, a very off-putting quivering main vocal that reminds me of the little i know of Barenaked Ladies. The vocal acrobatics are so cringworthy, they make Weird Al at his worst sound like Sinatra. The only restrained and listenable song is Long Gone Long...its actually a quite catchy song (the final track, Information is not bad, but the lyrics just feel rushed and specifically unrelatable, and it is about 2 min too long). Lots of themes of drinking and being suppressed permeate the album. Somehow, they were more popular in Europe, specifically Norway than the US. After breaking up the band after three albums and a hiatus, they reformed under pressure from their Norwegian popularity, and recorded a new album that went gold there in 1994. They are still together and active (2019) Their last album was in 2015. Stephen King liked them so much that he's included their lyrics in two of his books.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but i assume, for '86, and a generally dark cover & bandname, that this will be some sophisticated, cerebral-ly dark art rock, perhaps a little jangly.

Album Review: Glenn Morrow is one of the founders of the record Label Bar-None, famous for TMBG's original label. This is the first record put out by Bar None, and I came across a radio performance of Rage to Live supporting TMBG in a radio performance of "Why Does the Sun Shine"(link below). Pat Irwin of Raybeats & B-52's fame plays a guitar solo on the song Rain. The record is a mix of twangy college radio atmospheric rock, and tracks that take a bunch of listens to really get into and understand. Enough is Enough is pretty straightforward rock from the time, reminding me of Paul Westerberg

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But based on the album name and cover art, I get the impression that they are wacky, perhaps embarrassingly so. So I imagine this will be some sort of silly nerdy new wave band, like Pet Clams or the Rave Ups.

Album Review: This is an ep of 4 instrumental tracks, that feature elements of blues and soul, surf, and spy themes. Allmusic is quoted as calling them "the soundtrack for a James Bond movie directed by David Lynch" and that is spot on. Pat Irwin went on to scoring TV and Film, including his big break with the quality work he did on cartoon Rocko's Modern life.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but i appreciate the sexual connotations with their name, the album title, and the album artwork. Looking at their costumes, i imagine this to be some solid power pop / new wave.

Album Review: Its like every other song is good...some are straight up powerpop, some are lighter and have a bit of reggae influence, and some are pub rock; basically spanning the gamut of what passed for New Wave. The driving song Sabotage to end the album is their best track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, Breathmints. But it is a beautifully, creative and mysterious product, as there is really no information about the band at all except a few names printed on a clear plastic insert, like you'd use on an overhead projector. The picture disc itself is beautiful, with an insane MTV's The Head looking drawing on the "JAM" side, and the studio tracking/order sheet of this album's recording on the shark/ladybird side. No idea what the content is, since 2004, it could be anything. leaning toward arty indie rock.

Album Review: So this is an orchestrated noise record. Songs had general ideas, and the hired hands played improv-style noise through grit and feedback. They got insanely popular Steve Albini to engineer the album, What's interesting is that most of the tracks are isolated on the album. That is, when a track ends, the record spins in an infinite loop, and a needle re-drop is needed to advance. As the mystery far exceeds the music, I feel it is necessary to copy this anecdote from Mat Rademans hand (on the discogs page): "Approx, spring 2004 plans start being set into motion to record R.L. Stein's 1st LP.  At this point, the band was a duo of Ren Schofield on drums, myself on guitar/electronics & guest players depending on the city we were playing in. So talks between Ren & I began, who was gonna play on it with us? who was gonna record it? should we even really do this? After a few "uhhhs" & "mmmmm's" i basically said "fuck it, let's get Albini to record it, we'll get some rad people to play on it, get it pressed to picture disc, & i'll slave away on overtime at work the next few months & pay for it all!" Ren i believe responded with something like "cool.", delivered in a very monotone voice. So there it began....I had been running my mouth for years about wanting to record a record with Steve Albini. I can honestly remember calling Steve on the phone as far back as when i was in the Mirconauts to set up a session with him. I have been a long time fan of his work, & loved the sound he got on tape. So i got in touch with him and set up a date that worked best for all involved.Next to assemble the additional players, which ended up being a massive group of Breathmint's inner circle & other pals close to the heart.Matt Bacon Sarah Bernat Jared Burak Frank Falestra Carlos Gonzalez E.W. Hagstrom Valerie Martino Andy Ortmann Mike Schauwitzer Jason VerhagenI booked the Newton "Cruel Summer" tour around the session, and off we went.So on August 19th, 2004 A.D., the 12 of us met that for breakfast and i presented the "gameplan", a loose structure of "songs" & a list of who would be playing with Ren & I on what track. Then over to Electrical Audio ( a two-studio complex located in Chicago, Illinois and owned by Steve Albini) to record & mix this LP." - Mat Rademan June 13th, 2008

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. The cover gives off a big Monkees vibe, but I imagine the music is much more late 70's style power than pop, taking the back photo into consideration.

Album Review: So this is some pure power pop, with a little new wave elements added, like a Farfisa keyboard added to "Telescope" and "Come On". Baby Don't Go is a poppy compact Powerpop gem, hitting all the template features of the genre: catchy guitar, soaring power solos, driving tempo, and harmonies in the chorus. Add in the topic of relationships/romance, and this could be Badfinger.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. from the looks of the cover, artwork, and weird computer rendering textures and graphics, I most definitely think this is going to be some adult contemporary free jazz sorta jawn. Even as it continues onto the back, it looks like it will be terrible based on the overall packaging.

Album review: The record is actually a delightful mix of some sweet power-pop harmonies and catchy hooks, along side bouncy melodies and lots of pianowork. "Blue" actually feels like it could be an Elvis Costello cover, with the way the vocals roll along. There are shades of Supertramp, Queen and ELO in the song styles.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but based on the years and artwork, it seems like it will be some sort of honkytonk midwest new wave.

Album Review: Rubber Rodeo basically all went to school together at the Rhode Island School of Design, and even featured the married songwriting team of Holmes & Milliken. They started out on fire, even getting a Grammy nomination for Long Form Video in 84, for Scenic Views. Their second album was not received well, and although they were dropped from their label, they kept going for a few years more. Once the band ended in the late 80’s, the married couple ended their union shortly after.

“Need You Need Me” starts with a few chants, and follows up with some road weary, echoing cowboy guitar. The vocals are shared by both husband & wife, and there a western movie set imagery is created by the song. The chorus of back and forth repetition of the song title between the couple is pretty catchy, especially how it comes in after the lone-range guitar. It does draw out and last a little longer than it needs to.
“Slow Me Down” possesses more of arena rock soundscape architecture with long and drawn out chords. There is a bit of an urgency in the verse, which is medicated by the chorus, which does in fact, slow down
“Anywhere With You” was a moderate hit. It is a peppy new wave song with lots of hooks and jangly guitars. It builds well, making you anticipate an emotional release in the chorus with a solid build. This is fully sung by Trish. There is a backing female chorus supporting the lead vocals. The chorus plays out to a fade, and although it too is a little too long, it is a solid hit and example of the era.
“Walking After Midnight” is a Patsy Cline cover. It offers a few sound effects hinting at a haunting, slow tempo. The country twang guitar kicks the song into a reliable structure. The female vocals are deep, and strained a bit. The whole atmosphere the song creates feels sparse.
“City of God” continues with the loud, power chords that swell with arena rock. The male vocals here feel like they are fluttering with emotion. So yeah, it feels like a quite preachy song of religious, evangelical enlightenment of not being able to go back to his former life, having found the city of god. I’ll be happy to never hear this song again.

“The Hardest Thing” was the first unsuccessful single. It has some echo-y bass and keyboards working a call and response in the beginning. Female vocals, generally deep in tone follow the melody unremarkably. The harmonized chorus places the listener into open-tundra soundscapes, like much of the era’s musical tone.
“House of Pain” is a mid tempo religious song with male vocals. The guitars wail in the background, empathizing with the vocals, blaming his point of focus on creating his house of pain. The lyrics are pretty stupid, and could be viewed to be typical country music topics. There is a whole section of him complaining about bringing home bacon for his lady to cook, but he goes on to explain how he likes his breakfast. Seems very misogynistic, and places all of the emotional blame of his painful relationship on the woman…but he’d do it all over again.
“Mess o' Me” is a paceless new wave song, that never quite captures a tempo, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The female vocals are like a witchy-Blondie. But about 1:45 in, the song finds a catchy cohesive chorus. There are a bunch of new wave elements that must have come with all of the 80’s synthesizers: twinkles, crystalline charms, zooming waves. Separated out, the chorus is very good, rising and falling and still pushing forward.
“Before I Go Away” slowly fades up with female vocals, with a theatrical presentation, echoing, repetitive waves of soothing. Once it gets to about 2 minutes, it transitions into an orchestral, Annie Lennox or Enya style song for a short burst. It kinda feels like all of the songs in Ween’s catalogue I never hope they play live. The chorus hits again 2 minutes later, with some classical chanting and feel.

“Heartbreak Highway” starts the album off with a couple haunting & western elements that then combined into a driving song. The female vocals sound more confident than the first album, and a little B-52’s-ish. The chorus has a nice melody rollercoaster. And toward the end there is even be a sax, and definitely some slide guitar action. It is a solid song.
“If You're Ever Alone” an over-processed drum roll begins this country ballad with some pep, sounding a little like a sit com theme song. The vocals feel a little like the Pretenders, but in an AOR, AM light rock way.
“Everybody's Talkin'” slowly fades up, with the famous melody from Midnight Cowboy. It is a cover of the Fred Neil (covered by Nilsson for the film) song, and features some synthesized effects on the slide guitar, but is otherwise pretty mellow, with a slight anxious metronome-like beat.
“Souvenir” continues the male vocals, with a slide guitar, toe-tapping bass line, and toy-piano sounding accents. The female vocals come in for s second verse, and they harmonize in the chorus. The song is not bad, but it feels a little empty, and is lacking one more hook or something to make it stand out & be catchy.
“The Civil War” starts off with harmonica and typical campfire cowboy on the prairie ballad. Banjo and strings are added to the slowly growing song. It carries with it a sad reflectiveness that turns patriotic around the midway point. The established melody is transcribed with a bunch of different instruments and instrument effects, from electric guitar to keys to sax, getting bolder and more empowered with each incident

“Deadtown” is also a shared vocal song, with many 80’s new wave synth elements, and a kinda of jittery, guitar based melody. The song also feels theatrical, particularly in the dense, icy chorus.
“When Worlds Collide” has a pulsing, anxious beat, and echoy instruments over the shared vocals. The verse feels like it is going to build into an explosive chorus, but instead, it scales down, and the chorus is a subdued, harmonized hookless melody.
“Look Who's Back” echoing tubular bells start the song, with female/Pretenders like vocals. The melody is kind of dreamy, incorporating soaring slide guitar in the forefront and bouncy synth underneath. Stripped down, this could probably be the catchiest song on the album, but unfortunately, for my taste, the slide guitar battles the speed and design of the rest of the song, and it comes out winning, detracting from the song as a whole.
“Maybe Next Year” slows the album down for a country ballad, with straight up country male vocals. Slide guitar is the main enforcer of this song too. It is a little sad, but hopeful at the same time. The female vocals do accompany the song, but really only fall to the background.
