  • Harold Leventhal - Producer
Unknown-ness: I don't believe I've heard of the Weavers. Maybe, as they have been around a long time, and Pete Seeger is a familiar name. But I imagine this to be imagine this will be olde-timey vocal harmonizing songs, where instrumentation is but a non-showcased afterthought or simply to keep rhythm & melody. With a setlist of 21 songs, all performed live, and a bunch of familiar traditional titles, I imagine this will get a little samey, too.

Album Review: This was recorded for their Xmas concert at Carnegie Hall, so applause bookends the tracks. Hootenany would be an accurate portrait of their banjangley folk harmonies. Their musical choices are international and quite varied with the record split into 4 sections: Classic Songs, Tall Tales, History/Geography, and Peace & Good Will. Often, one member will recite the upcoming lyric before it is sung in order to encourage audience sing-a-long.

The highly influential folk band (pre-dating Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan; all were influenced by the Weavers) started as a political group, with Seeger and Hays together as Alamac singers, protesting WW2. In 1941,with Germany moving into Russia, the US sentiment changes to pro-war propaganda, and the band became a pitched entering the war until the US finally joined the Allies. The band officially organized in 1948, thanks to a music circle Seeger organized in his basement called People's Songs. As the Red Scare / McCarthy era began, Seeger & Hays were questioned as US Communists, both refusing to testify in their own defense, putting them under FBI surveillance, denying them television / radio performances, leading to the loss of their Decca record contract and demise as a band in 1953. They got back together and played Carnegie Hall in 1955, had success with the recording, and set up a tour through 63, with occasional reunions. Seeger left the band in 1958 over plans to record a tobacco commercial, which he was against due to their danger & feeling of selling out. Their first tv appearance since 1951 performed on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 67. They would have appeared on the Jack Paar show, but refused to sign a loyalty oath to the US against communism.  Hays passed in 1981, Seeger died in 2014, Gilbert passed in 2015, and Hellerman died in 2016.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this singer / band. From the cover photo and the band photo on the back, I imagine this will be nasally, anxious, neurotic, jittery, catchy-as-hell power pop. I'll actually be slightly upset if it is not...perhaps i'm setting too high a bar, surly to lead to disappointment.

Album Review:  From the first track, Vanwarmers voice is delicate and warm, a little like Ric Ocasek  but an octave higher. The opening two tracks mixes power chords with jangleypop melodies and throws in some keys and synth to keep up with appearances in the 80's. Much of the rest are lighter ballads, that harken back to simple oldies and classic country, and a couple would fit right in to today's breezy island pop sound, even if it is not all synthesized.

Vanwarmer was a friendly, well liked musician who passed away too early at 48 years old from leukemia, a year after diagnosis. He had a short, bright career in pop, with the #1 single "Just When I Needed You the Most," a song that his wife sued Warner/Chappell for copyright ownership. Soon after his first 3 records, he transitioned to writing Country songs when "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" which already sounds like a country ballad, was covered by the Oak Ridge Boys. Other musicians Charley Pride, Michael Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Alabama (and many more) converted his songs to hits. Upon his death a portion of his ashes were sent into space.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this singer. But it looks really mod, and hippie with a strong foothold in the Dollywood country south. So oldie, catchy country pop is my guess.

Album Review: There is a lot of pop, catchy melodies, and slightly psych production to fit into the 60's mod sound, but there is also the same amount of country/gospel bluesy swagger to the songs, and Riley's vocals are versatile enough to easily handle both sounds. In 1968, she won the Grammy award for best female country vocal performance on Harper Valley PTA, which held the #1 Billboard spot for both pop & country and spawned movies and tv series, along with a major network variety show for her. Due to the content of the song: a widowed mother who dated and dressed in the 60's mini skit and go go boots style responded to a hypocritical PTA who judged her style negatively, she herself was pressured to match that style against her personal comfort. In the late 70's she became born-again and focused her recordings on gospel music. The songs on here were written by an array of people from Margaret Lewis & Myra Smith (4 tracks), Merle Haggard "Okie From Muskogee" and even Gary US Bonds + Swamp Dogg: Jerry Williams Jr "To The Other Woman," which is kind of a companion piece to her Harper Valley PTA single. Before she moved to Nashville, just out of high school, her four year marriage produced a daughter, Kim, in 1966, who later would accompany her on stage, singing back up, touring with her, and trying out her own career as Riley Coyle.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band. Just from the cover + band name, i imagine this to be a mid 80's jangle pop band, where the name is full of energy, but the cover looks like middle america, and the back band photo on the railroad tracks with pastel highlighted clothing furthers the working man's band, complete with bolo tie and the 80's fad Pretty in Pink Duckie hat.

Album Review: So rather than jangle pop, this midwestern (Pittsburgh might as well be the midwest), this college rock band accents heavily on the slide country guitar, and american working class mentality. Aside from looking like extras from Pretty in Pink a year before its release (Podrasky was dating & had a child with Molly Ringwalks older sister, Beth), they actually were in the film (as well as Beverly Hills 90210, where Podrasky had a brief relationship with Shannon Doherty). They also touch on Roots Rock and Rockabilly ("In My Gremlin"), and their moody "Radio" reminds me of James in parts. There have been a couple incarnations of the band, as members gathered and fell off as Podrasky moved from Pitts to LA back to Pitts and then back to LA. This main and steadiest version is the band happened after Podrasky's second move LA where he worked in the mailroom of A&M records along  with the other 3 members.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Orion, or Fresh, or Fresh Orion, or Orion Fresh, but it is very very obvious this will be basically an Elvis impersonator. The big selling point for me to get this was after i saw the beautiful see-through golden record. Like the classic label namesake, the record was like the sun.

Album Review: His name is indeed Orion by stage, James Hughes Bell by social security card. Most of the songs were written by Buddy Harris, the tempos range like a rollercoaster from slow and loungy to upbeat, energetic pub honky tonk. The vocals absolutely sound like Elvis. So much so, that many folks thought Elvis hadn't died in 1977 after hearing Orion/Ellis- a rumor he & Sun Records' Shelby Singleton were not eager to dismiss. In fact, the name Orion was his applied stage name after a book by Gail Brewer-Giorgio was published in 1978 also called Orion, who's protagonist was an Elvis-like pop star who faked his death. Despite the campy and sit-com like mystique, he has performed with many country greats like Lorletta Lynn, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Tammy Wynette. He also has many fan websites devoted to his career. In 83, he denounced the theatrical name of Orion, tearing off his mask mid-performance, only to don it again in 87 when sales did not grow under his real name. Ellis was murdered in his pawn shop along with his ex wife in 1998 at 53. There is even a 2015 documentary about his life titled Orion: The Man Who Would Be King. The song on here, "Some You Win, Some You Lose," has a general melody and structure to Chuck Berry's "Never Can Tell."

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks and the name / album title sounds like a blue-collar Bruce Cougar Springsteen Mellencamp sorta act.

Album Review: Althogh this album is mostly southern bluesy pub rock, it definitely leans toward country, although  the song "Straight Outa Midnight" sounds a little like The Who. McLaughlin has won numerous Juno awards and is in the Canadian Country Music HoF. He has a commercial pilots license as well, and has been flying personal and commercial aircrafts for many years. And he is still performing as of 2020.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them. Cover and front and back photo look like any CSNY or Loggins and Messina record, so i am supposing it will be southern-bluesy rock. The gatefold newspaper liner notes & stories is a fun artistic choice, centered around their printing press name suggestion.

Album Review: Although the album begins with a collage of tracks layered over each other, sounding like a bit of chaos, the album is a soulful slice of country-blues rock. Singer Paul Cotton went on to replace Messina in Poco, and the band was instrumental in the formation of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were originally from Chicago, and along with The Flock, Aorta & Chicago, were touted as the "Chicago Sound" by Columbia Records, even through they had moved to LA. "Beauty" carries more Psych & California pop in it than the other tracks on the record.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist. But the cover, with him taking on different stereotypes and forms to produce "funky folk flops" with a "can you believe this?" look on his face, i'm guessing this is not someone who takes these styles or cultures seriously or respectfully, and this is probably a joke / insult album.

Album Review: This is a comic record, which mostly pokes fun at counter culture and flower children via an out of touch sense of humor which would ring true with older folks worryin' 'bout them hippies. Bowman passed away in 2013, but was a disc jockey, singer & songwriter, and comedian. His career genre was country as he was the original DJ for "American Country Countdown" from 73-78, and he apparently helped Waylon Jennings get a start. There is really no singing on the album, it is jut Don saying some rhyming phrases over country-folk music, with elderly lines like "can you believe that, and aw shucks chuckles at his own "unbelievable" realizations. From the loose parody of  House of the Rising Sun as the perspective of a nosey neighbor to a community house of folk singers and hippies, like a redneck tea-bagging trumper's version of Tom Wait's "What is He Doing in There?" to the outright hatred of hippies in the obnoxious "The San Francisco Scene" and "Streets of San Francisco" the album is just as terrible in its intolerance as well as the storytelling. Perhaps they assumed that hippies and their culture was a passing phase, that looking back at the scene would put this album ahead of it's time, alas, it's just grandpa yelling get offa my lawn. Or maybe the prejudice was part of the charm, and this album is trying to show folks how disrespectful people come off? I really doubt it.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But from the name and the untracked VHS looking artwork + year, I imagine this will be some dark, cold new wave with lots of synth and goth themes.

Album Review: It was not that- definitely not synth, new wave or goth. This is a jangly college radio version of country rock, with heavy lean on the country element. Although i would not associate the sound as punk at all, they came from the Cowpunk movement, apparently more raw on their first album. The songs are definitely more driving and foot stompin' than typical country. The band name is taken from a Tex Ritter song of the same name that was played by Big Al; one of the animatronic bears at Disneyland's Country Bear Jamboree. Annette was in the band the Bangs, which became the Bangles, but left them to join this band right before the Bangles first record came out (but after an EP). Her vocals are strong on the whole album, especially on their cover of traditional folk song In the Pines, which sounds an awful lot like House of the Rising Sun. "Johnnie's At the Fair" sounds like a traditional native american song.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band / artist. He looks wacky, and the play on words with his name and island things, i assume this is going to be a silly, embarrassing jokey record full of puns and bad dad jokes. The back image does nothing to settle my hesitation. But perhaps there is some value within these songs, because i always say, there are typically at least two people that are all-in on the production of each record released.

Album Review: There is a good mix of styles here, all within a folk genre...Dylan and Van Morrison esque on the A side, to bluegrass and funkiness with an experiment in echoing reverb to start off the trad."Stranger Blues." "Two Rivers in MT" is an ambient instrumental that successfully mimics water flowing in a stream, and it oddly breaks up the album's momentum. On a personal note, i'm a big fan of Ween, so it's nice to hear one of the 12 Golden Greats, Bobby Ogdin, playing on another album.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this singer/songwriter, but I expect a general slacker meets hipster songsmith.

Album Review: This record jumps all around the styles from pub rock to disco to country. The vocals don't sound like they're the same person on any one track, which might have been a goal, but this feels like a genre compilation more than a solidified album. He sounds like Zappa, Lou Reed, generic honky-tonk, or Robert Plant at any one time. Not positive, but I suspect the album title and first track is a veiled references to asking for anal sex.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I really like the cover art and backing photo artwork. Makes me think it will have an earthy, folksy feel, but still have a worldy, and interesting intelligence about it.  I'm expecting a Los Lobos meets Half Japanese feel.

Album Review: So the Schramms, originally a placeholder name when they found out their previous name was already in use, have a lot of ties to Yo La Tengo’s very early years. Founding and namesake member Dave Schramm left Yo La Tengo after their first album and many other band mates were involved with the early years as well. Their US distribution was through Rough Trade, which coincidentally folded just as they were beginning their first album push.

“Walk to Delphi” is a county rocking song with exaggerated, drawn our vocal syllables. It never really deviated from its pace or tempo, only building a little to go into the chorus. The instrumental at the end relies heavily on country style, mixed with rock, to make the definitive alt-country style.
“Out of the Earth” continues with the twangy vocals, and a slower story-song style, with slide guitar, quiet backing vocals, and harmonica instrumental section.
“Living in Confusion” is light, and features wood block percussion. The long vocal notes rise and fall, offering a defined country style. The instrumental at the end features slide guitar heavily.
“Letdown Later” is all acoustic guitar in the beginning. Then it launches into a jangley stomper with a defined verse-chorus structure. The instrumental features a shrill keyboard section that honky’s up the tonk (this sounded like a good description in my head).
“It's Not What She Wants” is a slower ballad, relying on organ-like notes held. It picks up in energy after a minute goes by, and continues the upward momentum with an almost rocking out chorus. Once it finds the hook and momentum, it rides it out for the rest of the song.

“Big Stink” starts side two as a theatrical western instrumental, with an upbeat tempo and plenty of slide guitar and organ in the latter part of the song.
“Everytime” shuffles along with a quick drum beat, sort of like the tempo of a train. Jangly guitar and drawn out vocals make up the rest of the songs motivation. The momentum is held though out the whole song, until the train makes it to the destination, and the instruments are peeled back
“The Way Some People Die” is a harmonica heavy, jangly singer-songwriter tune. The chorus melody is catchy, reminding me a little of the Violent Femmes (and the Bluebells), as it builds. It’s probably the most approachable and accessible song on the album.
“Number Nineteen” is a slowly building song with a swaying, sing song melody, and dual harmonicas. It kinda makes me imagine what John Linnell (of They Might Be Giants) would sound like singing country. The instrumental section slows down to a near-stall, before guitar kicks it back into gear. This song is more folky than country.
“Gusano Verde” starts as a double dose blast of chaotic, echoing rums and guitar. Then a slower, heel dragging section that also comes off as very cinematic, rolls along, kicking up dust in a small western town’s dirt road and blowing it into mini tornados. The instrumental continues along, with peaks and valleys of emotional and somewhat progressive musical sections until it just gives out.
“Of All the Souls” wraps up the album with acoustic guitar, and sloppy lyrical presentation that hits at drunkenness. It is very folky in execution, and a church organ kicks in about the 2 minute mark to finish out the song and album.

Jimmie Jewell - Sax (Keef Hartley Band, Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance, Roger Daltrey, No Dice, The Hollies)

Steve Bingham  Bass (Slim Chance)

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this artist. It looks like it may be a kinda plain, singer songwriter album. The straight lines and color fade, although resembles the window of the hotel room in the album title, it also has a bit of a Jazz artistic style to it, including the font- so it may be a little more than tedious guitar folk.

Album Review: Kevin was born into a world where music was prevalent. A drummer in the late 60’s his art college background allowed him to transition and weave easily between a couple of semi-popular bands and a solo career. Although he continued to play, art became the main focus of his career in the 80’s through to his death in 2004

“Yankee Girl” is a boozey, bouncy New Orleans big band jaunt. Lots of horns in the background, and a light pleasant vocal, reminding me of the Kinks. Odd how the song, that drips of bourbon street parade is considered a good style for a Yankee girl.
“Stars Fade” is a quieter, reflection of a song. With layered vocals during the verse, and echoing organ that rings out, the song is almost an easy listening track. But the bass countrifies the song a little.
“Anticipation” follows with a slow, leg dragging tempo, and it is either a big coincidence or appropriating the key line in 1975’s Rocky Horror Picture show, as the vocals drag out the last two syllables of the song title. The song builds as it moves along, bringing in sax, a chorus of backing female vocals, and a bit quicker drive. The vocals are a little singer-songwriter Beatle-y. The sax & keys play the song out to a fade
“The Girl” sounds like a slow Belle & Sebastian song at first, with the organ melody and tempo. But the vocals are soft, and the melody is not too complex, with a sleepy male vocal like Rod McKuen.
“I Like Rock n' Roll” kicks right in with a driving rock and roll tempo thanks to guitar and drums. It then becomes a pub rock version of RnR, driven by the piano melody. A sax plays out the instrumental, sticking to the basic melody.

“Love, Love, Love” starts of side two with a trip back to the southern, bluesy & boozy swamp stomping ditty. The chorus of Loves is layered with harmonizing backing vocals. The demeanor of the vocals are lazy, almost bored.
“Sweet Green Eyes” starts slow and quiet with a couple of chords held for a few seconds and soothing, vocals serenating a woman with mentioned green eyes. Overall it feels a little churchy, especially when the organ emerges from the main chords as its own distinct voice. The song ends somewhat abruptly.
“Pretty Boys Daces” kicks right in with an older honky-tonk style song. Driving bass line and country & wester style vocals, and twangy guitar in the background. The chorus slows the song down alongside the vocals, and supporting “Oooo’s” make the break seem important and angelic.
“Borrowed From a Dream” begins with a barn dance style song with simple two note bass line and violin strings. The verse only keeps the bass line, and it loses the danceable element. The instrumental breaks should have an accompanying line dance, and it really does feel like it could be on Ween’s 12 Country Greats.
“Monkee Tree” starts with piano, and the vocals croon, with beatle-esq quality over the slowly growing musical accompaniment. The bass is featured prominently along with the pub room piano. There is one section where his vocals train higher for emphasis, which reminds me a lot of how Robert Schneider (of Apples In Stereo) sings “but you” toward the end of their song “Nobody But You.” The sad sax seems to echo sadness in the vocals. The song seems to reset itself with a bouncy section right before it ends.

Unknown-ness: I’ve never heard of this band, which is just two guys, so it seems. They look a little like Paul Simon and Harold Ramis, but that does not say anything about what the album will be like. It could be country, could be folk, heck, could be disco by looking at their collars on the back photo. But from the conservative blue collar dress, I’m going to guess they fall in the singer songwriter Americana vibe of the late 70’s.

Album Review: Craig Fuller was one of the founders of the Pure Prairie League out of Ohio. After working with Kaz in another band, American Flyer, they recorded this album, which is slightly more rock than their previous band. Joining them is a slew of popular session musicians who have worked with the likes of Carole King, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and many of them together make up another band/album that I have pending to this TSM list, The Section. Linda Ronstadt liked one song (Cry Like a Rainstorm) so much that she asked them to teach it to her, and it became part of the title for her 1989 album. After this one-off record, Fuller went back to Pure Prairie League as well as worked with Little Feat. Kaz continued to produce and compose works for other artists. Overall, this is not really my style of choice; it is completely harmless.

“Feel That Way Again” has an intro that is very similar to the acoustic guitar of Live’s “Lightning Crashes” intro. The song has a laid back, folky-country vibe. The vocals sound like Steve Forbert. The intensity grows a little bit with the electric guitar chords and the jangely piano toward the end, before the fade out.
“Cry Like a Rainstorm” was rerecorded and taught to Linda Ronstadt as the title track of her 1989 album. It begins with vocals and piano, reminding me a little of Neil Young’s vocals. It has a reflective confidence and somber tone. Two minutes in, an electric guitar cries out, reiterating the sullen sentiment.
“You Take My Heart” continues the reflective piano ballad genre. The chorus is a harmonized group of female vocals behind the lead. The second verse begins after a minute and a half; surprisingly unchanged from the first…I was expecting a tonal change. It sounds a little like one of the sentimental songs from Paul Williams in Emmet Otter’s Jugband Xmas special. This is the first Kaz lead song.
“Let the Fire Burn All Night” gains a little honky-tonk, pub room swagger, but it is far from a rocker. It maintains a steady tempo all the way through to the fade out. JD Souther adds to the background vocals.
“Til You Come Back” begins with nearly solo forlorn vocals. The song adds elements to the background, and putters on at a respectable pace. It rolls along, reminding me of the pace from Doris Troy’s “Just One Look,” without the catchy hooks.

“Annabella” starts with a quiet acoustic guitar, and then the bass begins. The rolling melody maintains a reserve, like it is restricted from producing energy from the emotional lyrics about a woman who seems to be slipping out of the singer’s grasp, growing desperate at the ending fade out.
“The Ways of a Woman” is quiet and reflective at the beginning. Voices join the lead vocals, bolstering his emotions. But the song feels like AOR filler, with an undefined chorus that blends right into the verse at a steady pace. The slide guitar gives it an authentic country feel. This is a Kaz lead song.
“Fool for You” picks up the pub rocking spirit a little, with the start stopping electric guitar, like the chorus of Steve Miller Band’s “Rock’n Me.” The chord changes are catchy in the chorus, and this song has more energy than the rest of the album put together. Michael McDonald helps in the backing vocals here
“Restless Sea” combines a gentle organ, and slow-ish, bouncy bass line. The song finds a middle ground pace, and the track continues a country style of storytelling, particularly in the instrumental break down. Leo Sayer contributes to the backing vocals here.
“Annabella (reprise)” is a strings only variation of the Annabella melody
