Unknown-ness: Never heard of the band... The version i picked up in a dollar bin had some band stickers, a flyer for the band and an interesting comic book about a discarded boy growing up with a deformed, giant left hand. So, for the music, i'm guessing it is dark and emo...with all black and white artwork, i don't imagine it being upbeat emo...perhaps more sludgy and heavy. The album has long & short songs, so perhaps it is laid out like a graphic novel, with some tracks containing dialogue, telling a conceptual story, sort of like Life Of Agony's River Runs Red.

Album Review: There are different sources for the "band name." Searching by the album title, which i first thought was the name, Jam Faction came up as a possible name (spotify), but it is also listed as a copyright / imprint label. The album is on Jimmy Greek's bandcamp page under the band name Left Handed Boy, so that's a more accurate source. The record is mixed genre hip-hop. There are dark tendencies on the album filled with a complex, artistic anger. All along, the record threads the storyline of born different, being berated by father, and having to fight, through the anecdote of being left handed. However, nothing comes off as aggressive: it just flows, telling a story musically and lyrically in a head nodding, interesting fashion, mixing in dialogue/monologues over the music to embellish the graphic novel aspect of the record: like a comic book version of an audiobook.

The group Left Handed Boy / Jam Faction is a collective headed off by Jimmy Greek, and associates Rummage, Coligreens and Carl Kavorkian, who has also worked with MF Doom. The members are based in Philly (10th & Arch was the address of The Trocadero) and Mount Holly, as explained on the album.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I always enjoy a nice gatefold album I've never heard: that usually means more care has gone into the album & packaging. I do like the Alice in Wonderland-like artwork, calling them peculiar friends, which is also the album and lead track name. Never heard of the name dropped singer, Genya Ravan, but from the design, I imagine this is pretty straight forward classic rock, maybe with a touch of Psych from the Alice/Mr. Toad's Wild Ride-inspired sketches.

Album Review: The album is definitely a classic rock with powerful female vocals, thinking Joplin/Slick with all the variants present within the classic rock realm: psych, garage, funk, rock, gospel, and even some slow ballads. Even through The Night I Got Out of Jail is a driving, fun rocker, overall this is not for me, but it sounds typical of the sound & period.
The band had already found considerable success and acclaim by this, the third album, and Rayan was ready to leave the band. They had played some big festivals and high profile venues like Fillmore East (where Rayan performed part of the show topless with body paint) and Carnegie Hall. The band survived 6 years total, a lead singer and record label changes, but it was a big starting block for Michael Zager's disco career. The band was also inspirational in the face of a male dominated field for Bette Midler & her writing of The Rose.

  • Greg Frey - Engineer
Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I got this because i liked the homemade nature of the cover. I didn't realize when i bought it that this was only a one song single with a remix on the back, but I was interested to see what this record, with the industrial sounding name and song title, would be like.

Album Review: Barely an album review, as it is just one song, but there is a lot of depth to the song. It is part kitchen sink-industrial  with a cold wave dance beat that comes off a punk, but more approachable, perhaps because the chorus is a soulful & sexy woman singing the title (think En Vogue). Maybe a little playfulness too like B-52's minus the surf aspect as well.

There is not much out there about this record/band, except for the information surrounding William Tucker. After this release, Ministry's Al Hourgensen picked him up to play on tour. He's from Jersey, so he has ties with Ween where he was in a band with their early producer/bass/keyboard player Andrew Weiss, and he gave guitar lessons to Deaner, AKA Mickey Melchiondo. He unfortunately took his own life in 1999.

Unknown-ness: Vaguely heard their name in passing, but don't really know much about them. From the name, they sound like a rough and tumble 50's throw back party band. The artwork gives a late night, after hours, ready for a classy hangover vibe.

Album Review: Mixing brass and blue eyed soul, The Jukes plays energetic bar room music that begs the listener to move. They have a gritty, loose feel to them like they were called up on stage from a musically trained audience to add in sections on the fly. Although, "I Remembered Last Night" has a Blues Traveler "Runaround" feel to it. Southside Johnny is is considered to be the Grandfather of the NJ / Jersey Shore Sound, influencing the likes of Jon Bon Jovi. He was born in a bar and grew up with parents who were into & played music. A contemporary of Springsteen, their mutual friend Steven Van Zandt was part of this band's early years. Solo and as a band,  (and advisors on fictional bands), Johnny and the Jukes performed in and wrote music for a couple of movies and tv shows. They had a documentary made in 1980 while playing in their home town of Asbury Park. On 7/11 of this year, they headlined a drive-in concert, the first major music performance since the pandemic began, at Monmouth Racetrack with horn honking in place of applause.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of the Pet Clams, but i bet it's gonna be wacky, juvenile humor intensive. The sexual innuendo and metaphor presented by their name and imagery is heavy handed, and they double down by censoring the lady licking a clam on the back cover with a black box..whether they were forced to do that or emphasized the nature of her action by choice is another matter completely.

Album Review: So although the cover says THE Pet Clams, and the record just as them listed as Pet Clams, it turns out their full name is "The Big Fat Pet Clams From Outer Space." Still a wacky name, even if the sexual nature is not as apparent. But the music is not obviously wacky or juvenile. It is basic pub rock in a genuine and straightforward style. "Gonna Get Fooled Again" has a catchy hook with a little Cars vibe. "Suicide Note" has an Elvis Costello "Radio Radio" or "No Action" feel. "Don't Get So Upset" & "Jerusalem" have a reggae / twin tone style putting them between the Police and Specials.Their clunky website tells the story of the Clams in true light, and they follow in the tragic steps of A&R men, wrong place at the wrong time, record label unkept promises, internal turmoil leading to stardom fame collapse. They did have some popularity in NYC's CBGBs, more than their home town club Stone Pony. Variations of the band have been kicking around for years since this album's release (up to 2017), and their website has scattered unreleased demos and live takes all over the site.

  • "Toots" Thielmans - Guitar (John Zorn, Quincy Jones 1000+ credits)
Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but I imagine it can't be far off from the Monkees or Hermans Hermits, but perhaps a bit more psychedelic, per the album name suggests.

Album Review: Well it is a bunch of oldies piled together, mostly covers that the harmonic vocal group put their own trademark sound on. The musicianship goes a little deeper. Single "My Mammy" could be covered efficiently by Belle & Sebastian after the first 30 seconds go by. Growin Old shows a bluesy R&B side to the band. "When I Lock My Door" has a Sinatra sixties swagger musically. And Beachboys and Bubblegum emits throughout. Their more familiar songs were also covers of "See you In September" and "Go Away Little Girl"

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover and back and band name screams pub rock & power pop with a penchant for 50's retro style. Get a real working man's small town americana vibe with the cover action in the front seat of a pink caddie with tiger print seats. The boxing glove keychain is a nice touch, standing for the Knockouts.

Album Review: The amount of harmonic power pop bands that lived through the 70's and 80's is astounding. So many bands wanted to be Foreigner or Bad Company or Boston. Their big claim to fame came after this record, around 1984, when they wrote & recorded "Hungry Eyes" and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," both songs featured in Dirty Dancing, winning Franke an Acadamy Award. Also, Bon Jovi Drummer Tico Torres joined them for a bit after this album's release.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, I like the name, cool play on a term i'd assume with synth and cold wave music, however their look is really pastel, yacht-ready, and reminds me of Squeeze a little. Here's another album with the busy checker / graph pattern across the front and back. I can only assume this will be synth heavy, upbeat new wave.

Album Review: So the album is not actually all that synth heavy, but it is a really fun, upbeat power-pop, new wave album not far from Squeeze, but bringing smooth ELO harmonies and some jittery accents to the songs. A couple of the lighter songs sound like oldies songs updated for the 80's, particularly the piano heavy "Pandy Fackler"-like (Ween) song "Broadway Beauty." I also really like the slinky bass & guitar that comes off a little Police-like on Time After Time.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but saw it at a record flea market, and figured the content had to be good or at least interesting...80's bad girl vibe, but in a fashionable way, so assuming they will sound like a band Ex hex is trying to replicate.

Album Review: So they don't sound as heavy as I thought they would, kind of like a slightly heavier, rock version of the Go-Gos. The vocals have a fluttering like them, and like Corin Tucker (Sleater- Kinney). They were pioneers, even though that was not their intent, wearing catholic outfits and memorablia along side their genuine, non-offensive music. The original band only lasted a few years (broke up in 85) and had this one album, but they got to tour with legendary bands (Petty, Kinks, Ramones, Clash) and play legendary places. Although they were the first NJ all-girl band to get signed to a major label, they never connected or were promoted efficiently because it seemed the corporate rulers could not accept their "voice" before they ever heard it. SNL cancelled them based on potential backlash, and they were banned from Rhode Island based on one misinterpreted lyric in "God Made You For Me" that the church felt was calling god a woman. A new line up got back together in 2002 and have recorded a couple albums since.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the cover and back, they definitely think of themselves as ladies men, but I see them as a small town band playing to hometown class reunions and high school football games. I still guess it will be pub rock or power pop.

Album Review: Even though they are a Jersey band, the middle America vibe is strong with this one, as the songs are set for arena rock if the arena is a local VFW or friend's wedding. They do explore some extra curricular instruments like synth sounds and smooth harmonies, but at their root, they are a power-pop band sounding like Journey or Kansas.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but i assume, for '86, and a generally dark cover & bandname, that this will be some sophisticated, cerebral-ly dark art rock, perhaps a little jangly.

Album Review: Glenn Morrow is one of the founders of the record Label Bar-None, famous for TMBG's original label. This is the first record put out by Bar None, and I came across a radio performance of Rage to Live supporting TMBG in a radio performance of "Why Does the Sun Shine"(link below). Pat Irwin of Raybeats & B-52's fame plays a guitar solo on the song Rain. The record is a mix of twangy college radio atmospheric rock, and tracks that take a bunch of listens to really get into and understand. Enough is Enough is pretty straightforward rock from the time, reminding me of Paul Westerberg

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Holme, but I love the atomic age artwork on the front, and the added feature of the 50's style couple dancing makes me think that this might be an oldies throwback band. The back says Garden State Rock and Roll, so that could still be oldies style, and we know they're from Jersey.

Album Review: Guitarist Joel Krauss's daughter is the front women of the band Sleigh Bells. Their Garden State Parkway logo was approved by the NJ Highway Authority. The intro to the album is all synth and sets a New Wave tone not really duplicated on the rest of the record. "Lightning Strikes" is a favorite song in general (one of my Mom's favorites), and this version is interesting enough to be the stand out track. "Parkway Boogie" steals a little from "Green Onions," and then becomes a Blasters sorta track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. Love the angles of the title and band name, as well as the entire set on the cover. Solid color scheme too: bright & lively. Based on the band photo on the back, they look like a bunch of average dudes. I'm guessing its some sort of New Wave.

Album Review: From start to finish, this is a fun album full of power pop guitar hooks and on updated driving oldies sound. A lot of the elements they use, including the vocals, remind me a lot of Squeeze, though not quite as hook laden. They are a Jersey band who only had this album and an unreleased 4 track ep, produced by one of Bowie's Spiders from Mars, Mick Ronson. After this band's demise, three of the four went on to form a band caled Private Sector, which apparently had a good local run playing at venues 'down the shore.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but they also (like the Philisteens) look like a typical new Wave Band, however, there is a chance that they could be more jangley college pop, since it is a 1985 record, and markered over as a radio station's copy.

Album Review: They are a very Police inspired reggae-new Wave band. All of their songs have the repetitive & rhythmically strummed chords/ They do not have quite the energy of ska, and there is no brass. But they are considered to be part of the NYC Ska contingent, with their own variation on the genre. Singer Don Brody was a survivor of polio in his youth, and learned to play guitar while bedridden. He passed away at 44 in his sleep in Dec'97.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but by the toilet humor name and cover album photo in front of the Statue of Liberty, I imagine this to be a southern bluesy rock band like Lynyrd Skynyrd or something.

Album Review: This is a 70's folksy AOR band with a little more bite. Some fun southern bluesy elements incorporated to power pop and classic rock songs. Not much about them out there on the internet...perhaps the most is on the comments section of a youtube video. Not quite as silly as the name would indicate.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but the album was very appealing. Recorded in 1981, with a silly name & title, and cover art to go right along with the title, apparently taken in Asbury Park.Lots of local bands from this era put out some fun, bouncy music, so I just hope this is in the same vein as the Fabulous Fondas.

Album Review: They were a silly, satirical band from Jersey, with a few singles and this EP under their self-producing belt. Singer Kaplow has moved on to writing novels, scripts and other works. The band was on NPR back in the 80’s, and appeared on the Uncle Floyd show, along with Tiny Tim.

“Boardwalk/Ghetto Santa” begins with an amateur rock opera dialogue over a tinkling piano, as if it is the wishes of a young boy asking Santa to save him from the town. The song kicks in with a fun surf-rock style, and deep, vocals seeming to maybe mimic Elvis a little, but the lyrics are comedic in theme.
“My Heat's In Gridlock” is a gritty song that sounds as if it is sung by an angry, agitated Weird Al. The song’s style is slinky pub rock, with exaggerated vocals.
“What's So Funny” starts with spoken work over quiet music. The song kicks in with a toe-tapping, bluesy Blasters style song. The song is sectioned out in intervals, the music is broken up by spoken word sections. The song is questioning what is so funny about TV shows like Benny Hill or TV Bloopers, as they are more sick than humorous.

“Shell Game” is another exaggerated vocal performance, this time in a new wave theme, over a driving bass line. It reminds me a little of They Might Be Giants, and includes a new wave (Elvis Costello) organ effect. This is probably the most straight forward song on the album, and the best one.
“I Asked the Angels” starts after a spoken word discussion and then a false start. But the song is a slow 50’s styled doo-wop, vocal band ballad. Like a silly version of Earth Angel. I do keep anticipating the vocals to sing “Angels of Harlem” rather than “Angel Sent You”
“Baghdad Daddy” is a particularly cringe-worthy song, introduced with an A&R man discrediting the band. The song has exaggerated vocals pared with deep complimentary vocals, singing a greaser-pub rock style song. The song uses the Beatles line from Come Together: “One and One and One is three”
“I Dreamt I Dreamt of Gefilte Fish” is a straight up silly Bob Dylan Parody song. And is another cringe worthy track. The singer sings of Gefilte Fish being eaten all of the time and everywhere in his place, which will most likely make him a Gefilte Fish soon. It has a very vaudevillian feel to it in the ending.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard this Beatles rip-off band, but I can only assume it is a poor man's version of the Beatles, created to trying to coax unsuspecting mothers out to buy their snotty, complaining kid a Beatles album. There is not much room to dispute that his will be a shameless parody of the Beatles.

Album Review: So there is a big, shady side to the 60’s music industry represented here with this album, which makes for a more exciting story than the album (which is a surprisingly solid set of songs). Apparently, this band was called the Coachmen 5, and after recording these songs with a hired hand songwriter, the NJ group (definitely not recorded in England) was under the impression that it would be their album. They had no idea the label would rename the group, rename the songs to sound more British, and use British looking models for the cover. The real band saw no royalties and the Coachmen 5 suffered from the travesty. Many mothers bought this album for their kids, not knowing it wasn’t a Beatles album. Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo was one such disappointed owner of the album, which helped him pen the song “U Got Me Bugged” in tribute.

But the whole thing gets weirder. In 1966, when the music scene shifted ever so slightly, and Go-Go music began to take off, the record label repackaged the unsold records in their inventory with a new cover and title: “Boots a Go-Go.” They left off all the track listings to make people think it was a new Buggs album. At least Gary Wright escaped the whole ordeal mentally intact, since he was able to have a secondary career as a solo artist, having written “Dream Weaver.” Perhaps all of these experienced learned him as to what NOT to go in the music industry.

“I Want to Hold Your Hand” is a cover of the Beatles song. You know the song. They can’t hit all the notes, but musically it is a solid cover. Well, the guitar might not sound as punchy, but they do a good enough job, without sounding as silly as the Liverpool Beats rip off.
“Mersey Mercy (You've Got Me Bugged)” follows with a similar sounding guitar, and is definitely a Beatles inspired song. It has a little more of an island sound to it, like the Beatles mid-tempo Hard Days Night songs and the harmonies are layered well.
“Soho Man (Just One Look)” is a cover of the Doris Troy 1963 hit song, which the Hollies covered and also helped make famous. His version drops off the romantic longing, and goes for a punchy rushed pop tempo. So they make it their own rather than doing a soulful version. It is done well, like how the Beatles might have interpreted the song.
“East End (Since You Broke My Heart)” is a slow dance song, more in line with the male harmonic vocal groups of the time, and less like the Beatles. There are sweeping harmonies over the chorus, but this trys to hang on to the style of music like the Bachelors, with a crooning at the school dance vibe. Like a less catchy Earth Angel.
“London Town Swing (Why Can't You Love the Boy Who Loves You)” starts out with a big, heavy guitar sound, and a snare drum waltz tempo. At its base, it has a “Little Drummer Boy” feel all the way through.

“She Loves You” is a cover of the Beatles song. It is a pretty faithful cover, utilizing the backing harmonic vocals, and powerful punches when the title is sung, along with whooooo’s and hand clap percussion.
“Liverpool Drag (Why Won't You Leave That Man?)” continues the spirit of many of the songs of the era…questioning and/or embracing love on a high school level. This song twists the I Want to Hold Your Hand melody around a little to create this variation.
“Swingin' Thames (That's For Sure)” has a side to side, slightly proto-psychedelic bass line that is prevalent to the song. Even the organ comes in bring a psych element. It feels like it was meant to be a country-ish song. It fades out once the tempo and melody changes to something repetitive.
“Big Ben Hop (Sassy Sue)” begins very delicate for 10 seconds, but then it transitions into a  Buddy Holly style song played by the Beatles. It features “Yeah yeah Yeah” flourishes as well. Sure, the vocals don’t always have a commanding grasp on the extended and raised notes that make take the tooo-OOO or meee-EEEE up an octave. But the pace and tone of the song is fun and dance-y.
“Teddy Boy Stomp (I'll Never Leave You)” has a jittery guitar at the beginning with Dat-a-dums sung overtop and a “whoop” used to end a few lyric lines. The lyrics mention floating on clouds above, and the song feels like it is rolling along a rollercoaster up in the clouds.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, and from the moody, shadoy artwork, I imagine it is either moody art-rock or emo pop. It was in a dollar bin, and I am a fan of the bands that come from Gern Blandsten, so I wanted to pick it up. That said, the GB artists have a bit of an edge to them, so perhaps this is much punchier than I've given its artwork credit for. But maybe not.

Album Review: At the center of this band is Jeremy Winter, a multi-instrumentalist whose work was previously in a band called All Natural Lemon and Lime flavors, similar in vein to My Bloody Valentine. This is a beautiful album that I really enjoyed, but at the same time, would never pull it out to just put it on.

“The Center of Gravity (Sink Right Down)” fades up with a ringing string note. This cuts out, and dreary acoustic guitar strums support a very Radiohead – “The Bends” style of drawn out vocals. The strings come back in, followed by drums and a full production. The song finds its repetitive droning groove and pounds it into the listener without much diversion or alteration. The one dimensional song falls into its own pattern, and there is no telling when it would ever end. So when it does so, quite abruptly, the listener is shaken awake from a hypnotic trance.
“Waiting” feels more like a Jeff Buckley song with the guitar and jazzy drums. The vocals are echoing, and remind me of Ben Folds Five’s solemn songs from Reinhold Messner ("Hospital Song"). But the chorus has a very Buckley emotional delivery, without quite as much range. Overall, it is a very moody, pretty song.
“Well, Well” feels like it is going to be an oldie-pop song. But the vocals take it in a much more relaxed direction. After a couple delicate run throughs of verse-chorus, the heavier lo-fi guitars are brought out to distort what was kind of a straightforward pop song.
“Athuna” as more moody, romantic sounding acoustic guitars and the echoes on the vocals again make the whole project very Buckley-ish. The haunting high notes in the chorus have a bit if a British feel to them too (Radiohead’s “High and Dry”). As the guitar continues to play, the song ends in a fade out.
“Love You Blues” employs a looping, solemn vocal hook over some 60’s inspired dance pop. The mesh oddly well. The end result is a medicated happiness.
“Won’t You Treat It Like A Storm” straddles the thing Yorke-Buckley voice similarity, with some held notes that rattle away and a dark, Doors-like mood (minus the famous organ sound). The song ends in a looping psychedelic bass-guitar fade out.

“All Your Tongues” starts with strong daylight, waking up vocals, and a warbling acoustic guitar line. There is a bit of an alt-country feel to this song, but it is peaceful and organic. The interlude breakdown features an alarm-sounding guitar cadence mixed in with the bass line. The song resets itself, and wobbles though a few minor notes and slightly off pitches. The song feels as if it was produced in a soft, small, intimate room.
“More than Becoming” is a bouncy pop song, tweaked out with a buzzy electric guitar (like Of Montreal). But the song is a lot of fun, with its marching melody, reminds me a little of Euros Childs (Of Gorky’z Zygotic Mynci).
“Nobody Wants to Know” steps back from the fast dance song with a waltz. This reminds me of something you might hear on a demo recording from XTC’s “Mummer.”
“In the Dead Hot Sun” features the most straightforward vocals, reminding me a little of the Kinks. The melody reminds me of something a friend of mine would write (Jon Rosenberg). The music is a rollicking 60’s inspired slightly psychedelic pop song, and it even ends with a fade out of LaLaLaLa’s. This is followed up with a quiet fade up, one note at a time guitar with a hiccupping percussion in support. After a minute, this fades back out, and actually threw me because I figured it was the next track.
“Who is to Decide” quietly comes into existence with a record skipping “whoop” sound and warbling surf/steel guitar notes. Uneasy and tired, the song lolli-gags around, oscillating from foot to foot, as the ballad-like vocals rise and fall, matching the music, like a rowboat adrift on a gentle sea. The song bobs up and down as the tide draws the boat out further on a warm, moonlit night. As if this was a dream, a static buzz begins to grow, as if the sleeper is being awoken by a skipping record with a weedwacker running outside. A harsh jolt back to reality finally ends the record.
