Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, outside of somehow, at sometime, getting this CD, BUT, never listening to it. I'm just guessing it's going to be some good old early aughts garage/indie rock, maybe leaning away from gritty to the lighter power pop side, just based on the artwork. The band name adds energy, while the album, or EP title adds a depth of darkness, sadness and emo.

Album Review: Raspy vocals and driving, blue collar pub rock categorize this album as Punk Americana. Power pop leanings and jangley guitar support driving tempos. But there are a couple softer, calculate mellow tracks showing their full array,

Proudly based out of South Philly, the trio has evolved as a band, with McCracken at the helm the whole time, away from their blue collar rock, adding more elements of Alt-Country and twang into their later albums (3 total). Their band website is still active (2021) so i assume they are still together putting material together, still out of South Philly.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this singer/songwriter. I'm guessing he's gonna be your average storyteller, unpretentious singer, that is part bar room open miker (miller lite can), part musician's musician (photo on back in the studio) trying to break the mold (based on the album title) but won't.

Album Review: The album is part Americana, Roots rock, and part revival of the style of Buddy Holly- pretty much the formula of any singer song writer trying to sound different. The only stand-outish track- and not really for good- is the album ending title track. It features what sounds like a live audience of folks with background conversational ambiance to a Blasters-like song with some yelps, whistles and claps. The audience also does a bit of  call and response with the chorus, reminding me of Chuck Berry's My Ding-a-ling live recording.

Sykes has had a long career in the music industry rollercoastering between performing and writing. He has performed solom accompanied many famous musicians, and was even in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers. He has also written many songs recorded by others like The Judds, John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rosanna Cash, Guy Clark, George Thorogood, Sissy Spacek, Mitch Ryder Rodney Crowell, and he co-wrote Volcano with Jimmy Buffett. He started out in 1968 after hitchhiking to the Newport Music Festival and was inspired by Arlo Guthie's perfomance of "Alice's Restaurant Massacree." He even performed the single B.I.G. T.I.M.E on SNL in 1980, in support of this album, which was released on Tom Petty's record label.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this dude. From the cover and back, it looks like he's trying to be a scummy version of Billy Joel...a harder edge and if the back has any say, it looks like the model for the film They Live. 

Album Review: The album starts out strong, the first two tracks are fun and bouncy, with calm focused vocals similar to Mark Knopfler, but the rest takes a dive into darker territory mixed with blue collar Americana. Don't Wait on the Stairs has a little Elvis Costello / Graham Parker sound in his voice. A couple songs, like Bitter and Twisted embrace electronic synth effects, which were en vogue at the time. Figures of Authority brings in an extra layer of Goth, sounding a little like Sisters Of Mercy, or one of the early record reviews Bay of Pigs. 

So apparently, he's English, from Ipswich, Suffolk. And after music didn't pan out (to which he considers being "out-gay" might have been a contributing reason in 1981), he shifted it to a hobby and worked as a party/concert promotor and later a journalist. He then returned to music, and is still active self-releasing old and new material. A couple of his songs were recorded by Roger Daltrey.

Unknown-ness: Vaguely heard their name in passing, but don't really know much about them. From the name, they sound like a rough and tumble 50's throw back party band. The artwork gives a late night, after hours, ready for a classy hangover vibe.

Album Review: Mixing brass and blue eyed soul, The Jukes plays energetic bar room music that begs the listener to move. They have a gritty, loose feel to them like they were called up on stage from a musically trained audience to add in sections on the fly. Although, "I Remembered Last Night" has a Blues Traveler "Runaround" feel to it. Southside Johnny is is considered to be the Grandfather of the NJ / Jersey Shore Sound, influencing the likes of Jon Bon Jovi. He was born in a bar and grew up with parents who were into & played music. A contemporary of Springsteen, their mutual friend Steven Van Zandt was part of this band's early years. Solo and as a band,  (and advisors on fictional bands), Johnny and the Jukes performed in and wrote music for a couple of movies and tv shows. They had a documentary made in 1980 while playing in their home town of Asbury Park. On 7/11 of this year, they headlined a drive-in concert, the first major music performance since the pandemic began, at Monmouth Racetrack with horn honking in place of applause.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band.But they're living up the name by putting a snail shell right there on the cover, along with the band name in a font that looks like snail slime. The band photo on the back looks like they're a bunch of long haired hippies, so i imagine this might be psych (snail residue trippy poison?) or maybe just power pop.

Album Review: This pride of Santa Cruz band goes all in on the southern, bluesy rock style. Some songs have funky guitar solos, and a slight psych tinge to them, but its pretty straight forward custom van stoner rock. Some of the guitar solos remind me of Dean Ween's guitar work. This album came out 10 years into their career, but was still considered their first. When they started, they were a Cream-type blues-rock band. O'Neil's is the only original member left by the time of this album, even though Kraft joined a couple months into their existence. Sounds like they were a quite popular regional band, but never experienced much popularity outside the Monterey-Salinas market despite touring for Styx, Steve Miller Band and Santana and appearing on American Bandstand. They had to retire their band name due to legal issues and a bankrupt label, but some form of the band still plays out in the SC area (2020).

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks like a knock-off version of the Grateful Dead, down to their logo with a boat that looks like a train in the gatefold. They look like nice enough mountaineering hippies, and i bet they did a lot of drugs. So I have a feeling this may be a proggy jam band, so focused on the music loops that it goes on forever.

Album Review: This is the immediately following, and due to contractual obligations; overlapping, band of The Blues Project. In fact, the first Sea Train album had to be released as The Blues Projects for those exact reasons. This and their first album are both named Seatrain, with the only difference is a space in the name between Sea & Train on the first record. This and their follow-up record were both produced by Beatles main man, George Martin, and this is the first post-Beatles project that he produced. They blend various genres of the time, going back to bluesy rock with Blues Project, adding in country bluegrass, fiddle band barn dance, roots rock, and some prog elements. It has a very renaissance mountain jug and string band folksy feel, but produced very well with talented musicians. Single "13 Questions," an alien abduction song from the alien's POV, broke top 50 on the charts, and has a little funk / pre-disco element to it, that reminds me a little of The Go! team.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band. Just from the cover + band name, i imagine this to be a mid 80's jangle pop band, where the name is full of energy, but the cover looks like middle america, and the back band photo on the railroad tracks with pastel highlighted clothing furthers the working man's band, complete with bolo tie and the 80's fad Pretty in Pink Duckie hat.

Album Review: So rather than jangle pop, this midwestern (Pittsburgh might as well be the midwest), this college rock band accents heavily on the slide country guitar, and american working class mentality. Aside from looking like extras from Pretty in Pink a year before its release (Podrasky was dating & had a child with Molly Ringwalks older sister, Beth), they actually were in the film (as well as Beverly Hills 90210, where Podrasky had a brief relationship with Shannon Doherty). They also touch on Roots Rock and Rockabilly ("In My Gremlin"), and their moody "Radio" reminds me of James in parts. There have been a couple incarnations of the band, as members gathered and fell off as Podrasky moved from Pitts to LA back to Pitts and then back to LA. This main and steadiest version is the band happened after Podrasky's second move LA where he worked in the mailroom of A&M records along  with the other 3 members.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover is a painting, which could mean really anything, but it errs to the side of educated, and the back photo looks like the Men they Couldn't Hang or Dexy's Midnight Runners...hoping for the Dexys style, rather than the bland soundscape

Album Review: Holy cow are most of these songs terrible! "Big Fat Blonde" and "Government Cheese" are incredibly embarrassing. The style is almost a Celtic jangle pop meets light cow punk with, to me, a very off-putting quivering main vocal that reminds me of the little i know of Barenaked Ladies. The vocal acrobatics are so cringworthy, they make Weird Al at his worst sound like Sinatra. The only restrained and listenable song is Long Gone Long...its actually a quite catchy song (the final track, Information is not bad, but the lyrics just feel rushed and specifically unrelatable, and it is about 2 min too long). Lots of themes of drinking and being suppressed permeate the album. Somehow, they were more popular in Europe, specifically Norway than the US. After breaking up the band after three albums and a hiatus, they reformed under pressure from their Norwegian popularity, and recorded a new album that went gold there in 1994. They are still together and active (2019) Their last album was in 2015. Stephen King liked them so much that he's included their lyrics in two of his books.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of the Pet Clams, but i bet it's gonna be wacky, juvenile humor intensive. The sexual innuendo and metaphor presented by their name and imagery is heavy handed, and they double down by censoring the lady licking a clam on the back cover with a black box..whether they were forced to do that or emphasized the nature of her action by choice is another matter completely. 

Album Review: So although the cover says THE Pet Clams, and the record just as them listed as Pet Clams, it turns out their full name is "The Big Fat Pet Clams From Outer Space." Still a wacky name, even if the sexual nature is not as apparent. But the music is not obviously wacky or juvenile. It is basic pub rock in a genuine and straightforward style. "Gonna Get Fooled Again" has a catchy hook with a little Cars vibe. "Suicide Note" has an Elvis Costello "Radio Radio" or "No Action" feel. "Don't Get So Upset" & "Jerusalem" have a reggae / twin tone style putting them between the Police and Specials.Their clunky website tells the story of the Clams in true light, and they follow in the tragic steps of A&R men, wrong place at the wrong time, record label unkept promises, internal turmoil leading to stardom fame collapse. They did have some popularity in NYC's CBGBs, more than their home town club Stone Pony. Variations of the band have been kicking around for years since this album's release (up to 2017), and their website has scattered unreleased demos and live takes all over the site.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but by the toilet humor name and cover album photo in front of the Statue of Liberty, I imagine this to be a southern bluesy rock band like Lynyrd Skynyrd or something.

Album Review: This is a 70's folksy AOR band with a little more bite. Some fun southern bluesy elements incorporated to power pop and classic rock songs. Not much about them out there on the internet...perhaps the most is on the comments section of a youtube video. Not quite as silly as the name would indicate.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but between the general head-of-a-band name, and the mechanical / factory nature of the artwork, I'm guessing this is roots rock n roll: general Americana midwestern hick rock. Just how much will it be like Bruce Springsteen, though (not that I am a fan of or know much of the boss's catalog)

Album Review: Michael Stanley and the MSB are the epitome of local superstars with only moderate success outside of the region. Michael Stanley began in a band in college, and recorded two solo albums after that, while regional managing a record chain. From there he started the MSB in 1974, and starting in ’75, released an album a year for 12 years (skipping ’85). Most were on major labels, until they were unceremoniously dropped following You Can’t Fight Fashion. Their final 2 records were self-released. They hold some local concert attendance records, and their hit My Town, from YCFF, is still played by the Ohio State band at sports events. They finished their career together with a string of 12 concerts back in 86.

~”I'm Gonna Love You” was a single. Power Pop chords and a driving bass drum beat start off the slice of Americana pride. It rocks out with some near country electric guitar and fades out in the end.
“Dancing In The Dark” begins like a Big Star track, then changes direction into piano ballad territory.
“Step The Way” has a slightly dark town, and comes off like a prog rock track, reminding me of Kavaret.
“Waste a Little Time on Me” sounds like a country rock slow dance with some dated synth at the very end.
“Lost in the Funhouse Again” is a funky prog rock song, thanks to the disco bass. The whining electric guitar plays the song out over a gospel chorus of whoo-ho-hoos.
“Gypsy Eyes” relaxes from the energy in the last song with a soft whisper of a ballad. Power builds into the chorus, but the delivery is slow and methodical.

“Face the Music” was also a single. It starts right away with a fun bouncy bass line, dipping into bluesy pub rock and applying an underlying psychedelic organ. The chorus is powerful and catchy. This is the best song up to this point.
“Sweet Refrain” shifts gears quite suddenly to another quiet AM Radio ballad. Right before the chorus it uses a hook stolen from the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane.”  Perhaps that is the reason/ inspiration for the song in the first place.
“Highway Angel” begins with some slide guitar and funky guitars after a bit of dialogue. This would fit into the country rock camp.
“Where Have All The Clowns Gone” ” is a soft song, with a bit of a Soul Asylum feel to it, such as the soft verse in Black Gold.
“Song For My Children It is a respectful sentimental song and bleeds right in from the previous track. The end talks about being so high, and it feels like a mellow cloud walk, so I can only imagine the meaning.

*”Hard Time” starts off with a chugging bass line and dark, wind swept guitar and synth melodies. The vocals are drawn out and accented a little like Michael McDonald.
“Just Give Me Tonight” blasts out with sax and an upbeat tempo. Blue Collar vocals and general rock power through, along with some harmonies. The chorus sounds a little like Jackson Brown’s “Somebody’s Baby” from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
“Someone Like You” was a single, and sung by Kevin Raleigh. It reached #75 on the Billboard Magazine chart. The vocals are higher, perhaps a little Rod Stewart-ish, without the raspy-ness. But there is a very nice, fun drive in the chorus. Maybe sounding a bit like The Police’s “Don’t Stand So Close To Me.” And it ends on an energetic high that fades out.
“Highlife” is a sinister synth song, with sax intro. The vocals are the exaggerated McDonald style again, and the chorus gives a lighter clarity to the song’s dark verse.

“My Town” was a single, and is still performed by Ohio State’s band. It reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has a very Bruce Springsteen or John C. Mellencamp feel to it right away. It’s a chugging, energetic sing along.
“The Damage is Done” is a reflective slow piano based song with lots of ethereal, ambient synth sounds in the background. It sounds very dated to the early 80’s era…complete with sax solo.
“Fire In The Hole” is about a mining disaster. It has a nervous, synth energy, and the vocals are different than the first couple songs full of loud emotion. The end of the song has a bit of call and response with an army of miners chanting the song title at each other.
“How Can You Call This Love” sounds like it is sung by a woman. It is a typical smoothly energetic Footloose style song, swinging tempo from resting to rushing at the drop of the chorus. Electric guitar flourishes, reminding me a little of Beat it, are added for texture.
“Just How Good (A Bad Woman Feels)” is a country hard rock song, with exaggerated vocals a bit like Michael McDonald.

Unknown-ness: I’ve never heard of this band, which is just two guys, so it seems. They look a little like Paul Simon and Harold Ramis, but that does not say anything about what the album will be like. It could be country, could be folk, heck, could be disco by looking at their collars on the back photo. But from the conservative blue collar dress, I’m going to guess they fall in the singer songwriter Americana vibe of the late 70’s.

Album Review: Craig Fuller was one of the founders of the Pure Prairie League out of Ohio. After working with Kaz in another band, American Flyer, they recorded this album, which is slightly more rock than their previous band. Joining them is a slew of popular session musicians who have worked with the likes of Carole King, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and many of them together make up another band/album that I have pending to this TSM list, The Section. Linda Ronstadt liked one song (Cry Like a Rainstorm) so much that she asked them to teach it to her, and it became part of the title for her 1989 album. After this one-off record, Fuller went back to Pure Prairie League as well as worked with Little Feat. Kaz continued to produce and compose works for other artists. Overall, this is not really my style of choice; it is completely harmless.

“Feel That Way Again” has an intro that is very similar to the acoustic guitar of Live’s “Lightning Crashes” intro. The song has a laid back, folky-country vibe. The vocals sound like Steve Forbert. The intensity grows a little bit with the electric guitar chords and the jangely piano toward the end, before the fade out.
“Cry Like a Rainstorm” was rerecorded and taught to Linda Ronstadt as the title track of her 1989 album. It begins with vocals and piano, reminding me a little of Neil Young’s vocals. It has a reflective confidence and somber tone. Two minutes in, an electric guitar cries out, reiterating the sullen sentiment.
“You Take My Heart” continues the reflective piano ballad genre. The chorus is a harmonized group of female vocals behind the lead. The second verse begins after a minute and a half; surprisingly unchanged from the first…I was expecting a tonal change. It sounds a little like one of the sentimental songs from Paul Williams in Emmet Otter’s Jugband Xmas special. This is the first Kaz lead song.
“Let the Fire Burn All Night” gains a little honky-tonk, pub room swagger, but it is far from a rocker. It maintains a steady tempo all the way through to the fade out. JD Souther adds to the background vocals.
“Til You Come Back” begins with nearly solo forlorn vocals. The song adds elements to the background, and putters on at a respectable pace. It rolls along, reminding me of the pace from Doris Troy’s “Just One Look,” without the catchy hooks.

“Annabella” starts with a quiet acoustic guitar, and then the bass begins. The rolling melody maintains a reserve, like it is restricted from producing energy from the emotional lyrics about a woman who seems to be slipping out of the singer’s grasp, growing desperate at the ending fade out.
“The Ways of a Woman” is quiet and reflective at the beginning. Voices join the lead vocals, bolstering his emotions. But the song feels like AOR filler, with an undefined chorus that blends right into the verse at a steady pace. The slide guitar gives it an authentic country feel. This is a Kaz lead song.
“Fool for You” picks up the pub rocking spirit a little, with the start stopping electric guitar, like the chorus of Steve Miller Band’s “Rock’n Me.” The chord changes are catchy in the chorus, and this song has more energy than the rest of the album put together. Michael McDonald helps in the backing vocals here
“Restless Sea” combines a gentle organ, and slow-ish, bouncy bass line. The song finds a middle ground pace, and the track continues a country style of storytelling, particularly in the instrumental break down. Leo Sayer contributes to the backing vocals here.  
“Annabella (reprise)” is a strings only variation of the Annabella melody

Unknown-ness:
I’ve never heard of the band. But I like the color schemes and the geometric artwork on the back. There are Chinese accents with the font and the dragon on the front. The artwork on the cover is interesting, and real, what made me want to hear the album. The dragon snapping along to a boom box (presumably) playing their music gives a somewhat juvenile air, but at the same time, a focused intent to the band’s musical focus. I’m excited to see how angular/poppy this album is.

Album Review:
So the fellows in this band had moved on to bigger, and better and more popular things, like contributing music to Linda Ronstadt’s “punk” album Mad Love, and Mark writing Automatic for the Pointer Sisters, and “Novocain for the Soul” for the Eels as well as playing guitar for Jackson Browne. Peter and Steve B wrote the 21 Jump Street theme. Steve B has been producing TV and Peter’s been prolific in film & tv scoring.
“Empty Heart” has a very middle America, JC Mellencamp or Early Bryan Adams feel to the song. It is driving and stressed out. It is catchy, but not that memorable.
“Hanging On To No One” sounds just like any Marshall Crenshaw. It is jangly pop with a repetitive chorus that gets boring with repetition, rather than catchier. It has an emotional core, but I just don’t really care about the emotion. Even the organ, usually a nice addition to nervous new wave is toned down and smoothed over, coming across as muddled and overproduced.
“Swinging Divorcee” sounds like the Blasters. Americana Rock n’ Roll. It builds nicely, but it too falls flat in the production. The vocals seem a little jittery, but again, don’t offer that memorable punch. The vocals sound like any number of singer song writers. There is even a sax added in the instrumental, but again, the whole sound is flat.
“Lonely Street” is a soft, side to side swaying piano ballad. The steady, repetitively played piano chords give an urgency that lies just underneath the sad guitars and bass front.
"I Can't Get Over You” heads back into what I’d consider a sleazy power pop sound, with big guitars in the beginning that give way to a bouncy rhythmic chorus, which returns to the arena rock powerful chorus. The chorus becomes more emotional as the song progresses, as if the singer’s realizing more and more that he’s gonna need to get over his mate, which makes it that much harder.
“One Kiss” brings back the straight forward Marshall Crenshaw power pop song that feels like it is a dime a dozen song. Again, the production feels flat for most of the song, and except for the emotion, that is nearly a glam exclamation of the chorus.
“Love is Turning” breaks the mold set before it on the rest of the album. It feels like a more down to earth and focused power pop song. It is not as bold and bombastic, yet at the same time it is not trying as hard, which in this case is a positive. The production lets the melody take the song along rather than over-smoothed or poorly mixed instruments. There are numerous minor twists and turns with the melody, but it doesn’t feel forced or overly complicated. This is a solid Power-Pop song.
“Girls! Girls! Girls!” is the best song on the album. It begins with a great synth keyboard sound that sounds very Atari video-game-ish mimics an alarm in its revolving repetition. The power pop guitar is aggressive, but plays short choppy notes to make up the hook. The excitement and glee comes through in the happily sung chorus, which is catchy and exciting to anticipate. It reminds me a little of INXS at times. It has a nice fake ending that comes back in with the chorus. It could really be produced more sharply, accenting the highlight hooks of the song, but it still shines brightly enough on its own.
“Snap! Snap!” is an instrumental that starts off sounding like it is going to evolve into a mellow Fountains Of Wayne song. After the first section, it slows down into a micro-focused keyboard section that is slightly jittery, but really gives bridge to a prog/power pop electric guitar section.
“Mood Vertigo” abruptly jumps head first from the instrumental into a soaring electric guitar Bryan Adams style driving pop song. It again has a slightly jittery quality that could really have been enhanced if the vocals were not so echo-y and engineered differently. The chorus is repetitive, and has a very Foot Loose motivated quality to it.
