Unknown-ness: never heard of this band, but I liked the name, and i was familiar with the label, so i figured i was getting into some facet of punk...whether that is Riot Grrl, crust or folksy punk, i am not sure. But i am going to guess it leans more melodically than angry noise.

Album Review: There is definitely an angsty edge to the vocals, but the production has a folky feel to it. Like 4 Non Blondes playing L7. There is jangly production that is hard torn between the college radio style popular at the time, and trying to maintain a rougher edge. Curl Up & Dye drives with punk drumming at the start, but it mellows out into a trippy alt rock song.

The band was formed in 1985 as "an excuse to drink beer," released seven albums and toured primarily on the West Coast. They lasted until 1992, and most  members have continued ties to the music industry through magazines, art, and record store ownership.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, and not sure where I picked up this CD. From the looks of the film strip images of the band, it seems like they were trying to fit into that comfy radio friendly 2000's pub rock taps into power pop vein. A little hard garage-y, a little in your face, but not really: typically not my favorite, repetitive, nothing sticks out schlock.

Album Review: They have a catchy, streamlined rock-pop sound, with non-aggressive pop-punk chord changes, harmonies and some power-pop elements. At points it feels like they could launch into a n OTP rocking section, but often they fall back to let the harmonies breathe. As the album progresses, the influences increase, and alt-country is added into "Crooked Smile." There is a bit of a silent break on the last track, before a short violin + hand clap performance of Turkey in the Straw

Starting in San Fran, they worked out a Monday night ritual into a road show, where they showed independent short films between sets, not to mention a visual show behind them when they performed.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it do love the randomness of the song titles, the cutesy DIY album artwork with the googly eye monster, and the short song lengths that suggest fun quirky indie pop. My only concern is that it is too cutesy or silly in an embarrassing way.

Album Review: Twee, indie synth and bouncy pop form the backbones to this record. It is just fun, catchy and precious enough to tap into the positive enjoyment section of your brain. While most of the songs are less than 2 minutes, they feel like fleshed out songs rather then sketches. This is kinda right up my alley.

This appears to be their only release, and although most of the members were in other bands around the Charlottesville area, there is not much out there about this early aughts band, who survived for about two years 2003 - 2004

  • Jesse Van Anglen - Drums
  • Tres Warren - Guitar (Compound Eye, Messages, Psychic Ills, Moon Duo, Jeff Burch, Alfredo Thierman)
Unknown-ness: Never heard of the band. But I liked the simple angle of the font of the band name on the front and the MS Dos font on the back. Perhaps this is an angular, computer thinking band who used tech and synth in their basic indie rock style. Ace Fu is a Philly label, so I'm surprised i didn't hear of or cross paths seeing this band back in the aughts, as i was going to a lot of shows then.

Album Review: The band borrows from 70-80's new wave/punk with catchy  guitar work and bass lines and straightforward spoke/sung melodic but powerful female vocals. Mutual Masturbation brings in the angular guitar and energetic vocals bringing to mind the great 80's punk bands like Blondie, The Runaways and Sleater-Kinney at times. It is just a very fun record, full of driving energy and danceable spirit.

The band is 3/4 LA kids who left the lifestyle out west for shocking reality of Philadelphia's forgotten youth. 5-10 years older than the rest of the bands they played with, they started with a confidence their counterparts were trying to build, and still moved slowly, being true to their musical vision and selves. Apparently their live shows were fun (really wish i had seen them around the scene then), and from this record, i can tell they would have been a favorite.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. I believe this was another cast off a friend sent me in the mail a long time ago. I honestly don't know what to make if this...it could be anything from hard Americana rock to nu-metal to folksy pop rock or even a emo-prog based band. I'm going to go with the idea that it is somewhere in the middle of all that...general hardish rock, trying to be more complex than it is worth. Not a big fan of the logo for the band name, and seems out of place or alien when compared to the classical album name.

Album Review: From the get go, the band is channeling hair metal, with clear vocals with a calculated lilt. This is timeless in a sense, as it would not be out of place with the Slaughters or Warrants of the late 80's or Animal Bags or Candleboxes of the 90's, leading through the Nu-Metal scene of the aughts. This doesn't mean it is good, at all. The vocal range is impressive, though, with parts in whisper and hitting Muse or Ours melodic heights.

The name comes from India, meaning eternal knowledge. They hold the factoid for being the #1 unsigned Myspace band in the fall of 2005, which was shortly after their move to LA from Brooklyn, but moved back to Long Island later that same year. They have been on a couple big festival tours as well as being in television promos and shows (NCIS, Prison Break, Terminator: SC Chronicles, The Hills, Girls of Hedsor Hall).

Unknown-ness: I got this advanced cassette copy for a dollar back in the mid-late 90's, probably based on hearing their named dropped on MTV or read about them in CMJ Music Monthly, but i don't recall what the band sounds like. From the name & cover art, i imagine they are a pop band with garage and psych tendencies, as there is a 60's indie vibe to the art work, and velvet crush could be seen as either a clothing type worn in the psych world, or as appreciation of the Velvet Underground. On the other hand, with the album name mentioning god, and their small label name Creation, they might have underlying (or even outwardly) religious messages in the tracks. Is this Christian Rock?

Album Review: From the first couple of notes, they put out a strong garage power pop band vibe, with a little extra fuzz and feedback to keep one foot in the marketable alternative genre. They prove their versatility, with big Urge Overkill guitars on some tracks and alt-country slide guitar on others. My Blank Pages has a jangley electric hook that sounds like Michael Jackson's "Black or White."

Velvet Crush was formed in the Chicago-Champlain region as Menck & Chastain we friends between other bands and a few projects of their own. They moved to Rhode Island, where Velvet Crush was eventually formed. On the strength of a Teenage Fanclub cover, they found success with their first record, produced by Matthew Sweet, in the UK. This is their second record, first break-through for the US and first of two produced by Mitch Easter (named for Brian Wilson's description of SMiLe). They recorded up through 2004, but continue to perform reunion shows on occasion.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the cover, they make me think of an Ugly Kid Joe meets Journey combination...and that is pretty much what i imagine the music to take form as, too, even if it was 9 years before UKJ.

Album Review: Greasy rock begins with the needle drop. Not necessarily hard or heavy, just sleazy, southern rock with the two lead guitars, and trying to rock your face off (not not doing it) driving tempos.

The Van Zant family has its fair share of connection and history with southern blues rock. Johnny is the younger brother of Ronnie (died in the 1977 plane crash), who founded/sang for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Johnny is their current singer (since 1987). He also founded .38 Special with brother Donnie, and later Van Zant also with Donnie. This is the first release of the band that evolved from Austin Nickels Band, who formed 3 years earlier. Skynyrd had their farewell tour in 2018-19, Johnny said they could still record.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this singer / band. From the cover photo and the band photo on the back, I imagine this will be nasally, anxious, neurotic, jittery, catchy-as-hell power pop. I'll actually be slightly upset if it is not...perhaps i'm setting too high a bar, surly to lead to disappointment.

Album Review:  From the first track, Vanwarmers voice is delicate and warm, a little like Ric Ocasek  but an octave higher. The opening two tracks mixes power chords with jangleypop melodies and throws in some keys and synth to keep up with appearances in the 80's. Much of the rest are lighter ballads, that harken back to simple oldies and classic country, and a couple would fit right in to today's breezy island pop sound, even if it is not all synthesized.

Vanwarmer was a friendly, well liked musician who passed away too early at 48 years old from leukemia, a year after diagnosis. He had a short, bright career in pop, with the #1 single "Just When I Needed You the Most," a song that his wife sued Warner/Chappell for copyright ownership. Soon after his first 3 records, he transitioned to writing Country songs when "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" which already sounds like a country ballad, was covered by the Oak Ridge Boys. Other musicians Charley Pride, Michael Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Alabama (and many more) converted his songs to hits. Upon his death a portion of his ashes were sent into space.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Volumen. But based on their cover artwork and packaging, it looks like they are something like Man or Astroman meets the Faint...that is to say, Emo Math Rock

Album Review: Volumen are made of a complex concoction of musical sources...sometimes it is piano based pop, or loungy melodic music, or space prog, to Prince-like Devo, to power pop metal. Throw in the oddness of Captain Beefheart at times, and you are still nowhere closer to deciphering what they sound like. The EP that was tucked into the full album is much more straight forward synthy, dancy power pop-punk.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. The artwork makes me think it will be minimal or maybe some Saddle Creek worthy folksy indie rock.

Album Review: Most of Vert’s music has been published on Mouse on Mars’ label, and he even opened for them on a 2001 tour. His music is more melodic and straightforward than others in his genre of abstract intelligent dance music (IDM).
“Blindsight” starts with echoing hypnotic chords, with light percussive clicks and taps that would feel right at home in Twin Peaks. A staticy electric drum beat gives tempo and drive to the continuing floating chords. Singular elements bleed in and out, adding to the sound scape, and creating a repetitive pattern. The chords leave, for a sort of background noise and skipping solo. The sounds increase and grow, with the electric sound from Orphan Black added in, until the chords come back, with a brighter and optimistic feel. The song has seemed to find its stable place, and it rides out the hook until the end.
“This Precious Meanwhile” has a muffled street performer percussive tempo, with some juggling wood block effects buried just below. A general hum and other organic jar tinking and tocking effects are added, along with a flute that seems to note when the repetitive loop starts over. Sampled vocals are used as another instrument, sounding a little like Tricky. The effects are stripped back one at a time, and the song blinks out.
“Codfish Dada” begins with a looped scratch. A watery & blurry synth xylophone is added with a simple repetitive beat. The song scurries along, fuzzy effect are added and taken away, some are deep, some squeaky. The song returns to the start with the scratches from the beginning. The song rebuilds, as if it is in the forest, with electronic birds tweeting, and other effects that offer a feeling of running through a forest or field. The song ends with the sound of violins and other string instruments in a frozen state of warming up, and the continued bird tweets.
“The Tide Comes In & Then the Tide Goes Out” starts out with some static ocean water lapping on the beach sounds, mixed with muffled wind chimes, and a bubbling, skittering effects. Other watery, fuzzed out effects that could range from underwater sounds to bullfrog murmurs are added. The whole soundscape changes, like scenery slowly morphing as one would walk along the beach. Near the end, most of the effects are stripped away, leaving the shuffling, bubbling wood block sounds.
“Somewhere Between Here & Last Week” is 3 plus minutes of a sort of two tiered medieval flute melody. Melody-less drips or clicks are added, sounding random in the background.
“To Be is To Doo” comes next, but on most listing, “To Doo is To Be,” a 7:47 min song is supposed to be next. This track reminds me of the melodies from Aeon Flux’s early vocal-less short days. An accordion, violin and a sporadic metal tuning effect are added to the song, which has a sort of eastern European sound overall. It is by far the shortest song on the album, but is also the most concise and straightforward theme.
“Drawers of Water” begins with a skipping in reverse audio track, and echoing, vibrating Aphex Twin like crystal sounds blink out two tones on pulse, answering each other. In the background, a digital clock tone ticks on by, married to vibrating synth notes which parallel the two tone sounds as they change in pitch. Then around the 3:15 mark, a disco melody violin is added, looped in the same time constraint as the tone and synth changes.
“Last Night From a Bus I Saw” spins like a scratchy record (or it may just be my record). Spoken words samples with an emotionless tone begin the song, followed by a sad, minimal piano hook. In the background echoes a wind, like putting your ear to a conch shell. Other groaning and slow moving effects create a scene of waking up depressed and in pain. Electronic tones, like something from a horror movie (at first) take over the scene, and grow like they are punishing the ear drums…changing in tone, but never offering leniency. They suddenly stop, and we are taken so a sort of thoughtless, naive and charming melody played on a squeezebox, accompanied with enlightened, optimistic effects that seem to assist the childlike melody along, like a guardian angel.
“Scope/Lifetime” is a ten plus minute song, that begins slowly with singular notes that seem unsure how to proceed…they almost seem accidental, or like they are discovering their surroundings for the first time. Or they might be secondary noises from a bunch of instruments that are being set up to perform. It is quiet and singular, accompanied with a consistent record skipping sound that sets the tempo with its broom sweep sounds. The piano notes begin to get more organized, but they are like a newborn still discovering their range of motion. Vibrating tonal effects, chimes and swirling electronic crystal sounds play together, invited in by the piano. The song gets a lot more crowded, once the skittering bongos and wah-wah electronic notes take over, along with a jazzy cymbal/percussion performance that morphs into electronic techo onslaught (that is not overbearing, however). The song continues to grow and it loses all natural instrumentation for a symphony of buzzing, vibrating, and oscillating digital effects that cruise together like a variety of winged bugs in a vacant lot.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but I like the look of this album. The name, art design, and band photo stimulate a dark, futuristic, dystopian world, maybe a bit like blade runner. The music, I expect to be electronic, cold, and atmospheric, like the type of music that inspired the present day film Drive.

Album Review: Not much is out there about this band…found one of their older singles on Youtube, the album is mentioned as a footnote in a few band member’s discography, and one member has a brief memory recap about a song he wrote.

“Perimeter” begins with a drum roll and a synth track. But once the deep-ish female lead vocals start, it is obvious that the song is a pop-rock song, with synth as an accent, not as a main course. The song is bold and confident, following a simple catchy melody.
“Mixed Emotions” has a fast, driving drum beat. The synth is a little anxious, and the bass is dark, creating a somewhat jazzy, chaotic song, that actually reminds me a lot of Toyah. The song shifts gears for the chorus, and converges together for an accessible, bright, and hopeful melody. The vocals sound like they are classically trained, and in some sections, they are layered to create harmonies with themselves.
“In The City” driving and jittery is the way the song begins, but despite the track line up, I believe this is actually “LiveWire” since the chorus contains that lyric. The synth adds a depth to the bouncing bass and guitar melody, reining it in a little. The tone shifts to dark and anxious for the chorus.
“Cost Of Living” starts off with a jazzy prog rock element, reminding me of Brand X. It is all instrumental, and driving as it is urgent, like video game music.
“Livewire” is actually “In the City.” The song begins with a car driving up. The synth melody is very sinister and could put the listener on edge. It has a bit of a count Dracula feel to it, spooky and mesmerizing.
“Drive Song” continues with the dark synth elements and drums. The vocals range from deep crooning to growling. The song sounds bigger than a small club venue: I could only imagine it on a cold dance floor or cavernous venue. It has a bit of an X-Files vibe to it. There is a short spoken word section over jazzy instruments that give definition to Drive Song.

“Young Girls In LA” is a straight forward rock song, with synth elements in the beginning. The guitars soar and hook. The lyrics have a marching cadence, barely sung, just hanging on to the note changes in a sing-song fashion. The song builds well heading into the chorus: a cautionary reminder about the rough streets of LA. It sounds like the entire band picks up a line of lyrics as the song rises to the end.
“Wake Up and Dance” begins with a dancey drum beat and bouncy bass line, similar to Stevie Wonder’s “Part Time Lover.” There is a mechanical cadence to the chorus of the song, where the verse is much looser and groovy. Shining synth is added with a minute to go in the song. Pretty sure the song has male vocals.
“Everything and Nothing” begins with a jangly guitar beat, and is backed with arena rock guitars. The female vocals feel like they are trying to teach a lesson. The guitars soar in the instrumental sections, and are brought back down in time for the verses.
“Gravity” begins with twinkling space ship computer calibrations, and the song slowly grows. Then the dark bass line begins, driving the song to a bouncy dark wave song melody, alongside a dentist drill pitch synth. The song is quite theatrical, as it changes vocal tone often. The instrumental lines the drums, bass and synth up a little more, and it becomes quite dancey.
“Trashman” goes all in with the jazziness, with a synth sax, and a tempo setting piano: slumping broken-down  stumble. It too has a slight variant in styles, to make it theatrical as well.

Unknown-ness: Picked this up (along with the Popguns album) in an Oxfam charity shop in London. From the initial reaction of the artwork, it looks like it could be anything from psychedelic dance like Dee-Lite to alt-glam like the Soup Dragons.Honest evaluation is that it will be far less interesting than either of those likenesses.

Album Review: The Voice of the Beehive is made of two sisters from California, daughters of one of the singers from The Four Preps. But it was not until they moved to London that they crashed the music scene. Being joined in their first incarnation with two members from Madness, they found surprise demo success and quickly joined a major label. It only really lasted for two albums, as the third found the band paired down to just the sisters. Also turns out that Andy Partridge helped write a song from their final album in 1996, so there’s that.

“Beat of Love” is a bit of a wirey stopmer at the beginning, with guitars that ring out, and a fast, sing-song paced lyrics that are basically spoken at a rhythmic pace. The lyrics roll right off the tongue. The chorus slows the lyric delivery down, and finds the ladies harmonizing. Little effects and sonic elements are added into the mix, but the beauty of the song finds two catchy styles blended together to form a rewarding pop song.
“Sorrow Floats” is a slow, swaying ballad. It reminds me of Belly a little from the beginning sleepy guitar sound. The vocals still carry a rhythmic pace, but it is not as fast paced as the opener. It does, however, follow a similar format, where the bridge could be a chorus, but the chorus itself is slowed down in the delivery, not exactly fitting in with the tempo of the rest of the song – in a good way. A rocking out electric guitar picks up right at the end, as the song fades out.
“Don't Call Me Baby” was a single. It begins with a simple kick drum, and adds jangly guitar, making it fit right in with the Bangles catalogue. Not an energetic go-go’s song, but not a slow sleepy song. The bridge into the chorus is where the energy is found. The chorus, which also acts as the verse feels like an oldies melody, or something the short lived US band The Like (or the Pipettes) might have performed.
“Man in the Moon” was a UK single. It is a quirky, bordering on lyrically-embarrassing song that also starts off similar to a Belly song. It is a love ballad to the moon, and the qualities it possesses. The song feels like a peaceful and acoustic midnight canoe outing on a sleepy lake. Strings help out with the gentle relaxing, gliding melody.
“What You Have is Enough” is a fast pace, na-na-na-na song that, like the first track, seems to roll right off of the singer’s tongues. The sisters share singing duties, often moving to overtake, harmonize and solo at all the right times. The song keeps changing in that aspect in the first verse, but they join up by the chorus and rest of the song. The song continues at a driving pace, only relaxing on the dense sound with a dreamy section that moves at the same pace. The song relies on the “na-na-na” mocking tone for the ending of the song, but it feels like it ends much too quick.
“Oh Love” is another swaying ballad, this one sounding more acoustic and upbeat than “Sorrow Floats.” The song, drunk on love, stumbles along at a waltzing pace. The mandolin sets the tone for the mood that the song offers. This could probably be covered quite well by Jenny Lewis in today’s musical world.

“I Walk The Earth” begins with a bunch of overlaid harmonizing vocals. The song then takes off, with a bit of a rock and roll edge not seen previously on the record. By the time the chorus kicks in, the song presents its true hook, which reminds me a lot of what the band Bleached is currently doing.
“Trust Me” has a bit of an “I Want Candy” start. That comparison continues through the sing-song spoken vocals in the verse. The song kicks in at the bridge into the chorus, with a stomping drum beat, and a cut off right before it reaches the chorus…making this a very good potential build-delivery song. The second bridge kind of fizzles out into a plateau, and does not deliver on the build-up. But really, the bridge is catchy enough to sell the song.
“I Say Nothing” was a single. It is a jangly song that starts off with a kicking drum intro. The vocals again feel like they are trying to emulate Belinda Carlisle. I guess they made the singles to be void of the quirky nature the rest of the album has…this and “Don’t Call Me Baby” are covered in radio shine. Still, it is a solid song, with good build up to the chorus. The break down creates the perfect amount of anticipation for the song to break into the familiar instrumental melody.
“Barbarian In the Back of My Car” was played in LA radio station KROQ. This song also has some moderately embarrassing lyrics. It starts with a chugging guitar, which emulates a car engine. The vocals are sung/spoken in rapid fashion as they do, perhaps a little like Joan Jett. The chorus hits with a very simple three chord melody, but is very catchy. They actually edited their own lyrics, as there is an audible bleep in the “barbarian’s” quote saying I’ll f*ck you later, just get me to the bar.” Very unexpected from the naïve veneer they have created up to this point.
“Just A City” was also a single. It is a slow dance. The swaying 1-2-3 cadence would be great for a last middle school dance.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but I'm not too sure of what to make of the album. The colors are bright, pastels, a negative point for an album from 1984. But I do like the slight diagonal font, and the cartoon imagery of the band does not take itself too serious. Don't think it will be too new wave, punky, but hoping for some fun bouncy beats and Go-Go's similarities.

Album Review: The Vels were a mid-80’s synth pop band that toured around the Philadelphia are a bit. They had 2 albums total, and even scored an opening spot for the Psych Furs in 86. Sadly Chris Larkin passed away from pneumonia complications in 2007.

“Tell Me Something” kicks in with an electronic drum loop, and squeaky clean female vocals. This is radio friendly pop from the early 80’s. It is dancey and pure, bright, sparkling synth pop. Even the Phantom Of the Opera style synth notes have a chipper tone.
“Secret Garden” begins with sparkling and swirling- and very dated electronic synth. It is made up of major elements of teen-pop, with a slight mystical element. This feels like it could be remixed into a descent club hit, like Stevie B.
“Can't You Hear Me?” brings back a dance hit track, with digital bass and squeaky, shimmering synth. The vocal melody follows the music, but is buoyant and bobbing. The verse has male vocals, predominately, and the female vocals are added in the chorus. This head nodding, happy melody song is somewhat catchy, reminding me a little of Dogs Die In Hot Cars.
“Coming Attractions” features jazzy bass, followed by the shimmering and echoing synth. It has a little of a tropical feel, which might have been imported from their recording surroundings, as it was recorded in the Bahamas. This song lacks any kind of drive: it is just happy moving along at an uninfluenced pace. The male vocals support the lead during the chorus. The song does not evolve too much, just relying on the slow Caribbean drum beat, and synth loops.

“Look My Way” was the single. It starts with a church organ synth played at short notes. A vibrating pulse is added, and the drum loop comes in. And then male vocals come in, and the whole song takes on a Thompson Twins sound. But it quickly becomes clear that the style of the song is meant to be disco, even bring in a Debbie Harry Rap section.
“Day After Day” swirls in with a churchy organ matched with a bouncy piano. The vocal melody rolls along, with an uplifting, positive spirit. The bridge is an building 4 note hook that repeats on itself. The vocals feel like they are trying to be like the Go-Go’s. But the overall tone is very clinical and nonthreatening.
“Private World” employs a bunch of synth effects that make the backing music sound automated, like a crazy contraption or video game. The beat is steady, and maybe a little anxious. The vocal melody could inspire an arm waving clap along. The instrumental breakdown uses both a middle-eastern melody on top of synth African wood block/bongos. This is not a bad song, but it just needs to be a little more challenging.
“Hieroglyphics” ends the album with a slow drum machine loop, and synth steel drum keys. If this song were produced today, with less shtick, and shortened to highlight the basic melody (particularly in the chorus), it would be a pretty good song, but it gets lost on the dated production of the time. This song too has a bit of a rap in the middle
