Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. And nice little play on their name + artwork. They're paparazzi, shooting the stars, thus the band name and bright flash bulb cover. the back band photo catches the flash in a less bright stage, so we see who they are. And they look kinda Talking Heads - new waveish from their general, non-flamboyant outfits. I'm going to guess this will be a solid new wave band

Album Review: They definitely tend to err on the side of Hair Band / Metal side of power pop rather than quirky, jittery new wave end of the spectrum. "You've Got What I Need" borrows a little bit from the chorus melody of  "Philadelphia Freedom," perhaps to using the same Producer Dodgeon. Album Ender "Last Chance" shows their progressive side. Even with those elements, they have the auspicious claim to fame as the first american band to sign with Virgin Records. A second world's first claim, for them was that in 1989, they had the first ever album (a greatest hits CD called Touch Me Tonight) on Billboard's pop album chart that wasn't released on vinyl. Members floated in and out of the band due to illness, touring schedules and disenfranchisement with the music industry, but the band has continued in one way or another to this day, despite McLain's passing in 2018, with plans to play one-off shows here and there sporadically.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Saga, but i bet this sounds like Yes or Genesis, or any other Prog band of the 70's, even if this is dated 81/82. No doubt about it: from the fonts, to the name, to the world map on the back: definitely  conceptual prog.

Album Review: The songs are definite Prog: Meandering, energetic complex riffs that paint a picture all their own, with passionate vocals. The songs are very lively, catchy, and I feel like there is very little self-masturbatory jam sessioning here. I'm really enjoying the album more so than normal prog bands. This is their fourth - and first with American break out songs - of their 21 album catalogue. The core group of members have come, gone, and returned over the years, with a couple You Tube auditions for replacements. Every time a milestone was set, the fans pulled them right back in (including a strong following in Germany), including calling it quits in 2017 after 40 years, only to play final shows in 2018 and a reunion tour in 2020. Interestingly, they have a concept album scavenger hunt across seven records between 1978 - 2003, where some tracks- not in any particular order, are scattered and numbered as individual chapters: 16 in all. Upon completion, a live compilation of the chapters was released in 2005 to unveil a conceptual sci-fi story line about Einsteins brain, alien interest in humanity's self-destruction, and technological resurrection of the dead. Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, or these three artists based on their names. They are an interesting looking bunch, spanning the artistic look from Rockabilly to Punk to Glam to Goth to Powerpop. Looking at them, i expect the music to be something like Poison, to be honest. They look older, so this may be a supergroup of seasoned musicians I just don't know about. But i do know one thing, the fonts chosen for their name on the sleeve and back look awful, like horrendous clip art..although 1985 did not have computer clip art, so maybe they paved they way for what is terrible-looking now.

Album Review: The music is part sleazy arena rock and part hard country rock, but not necessarily rockabilly. maybe a good comparison would be if the Rolling Stones and INXS cross-bred and left the baby to a rich family in the American mid-west. The band was a result of The Stray Cats breaking up, as Phantom & Rocker were both Cats. Slick had been a guitarist for both Bowie and Lennon. On top of that pedigree, Keith Richards plays guitar on the track "My Mistake" and Nicky Hopkins (Who, Kinks, Stones) plays piano on 2 tracks. They only had 2 albums, this one doing well, but the second, Cover Girl, failing.

Unknown-ness: never heard of this artist, and the cover looks like a complete rock star wanna-be cliche. Wanna-be because I've never heard of him. But the metallic logo and Saturday afternoon UHF fantasy b-movie image of shirtless Farner on a horse is trying hard to be iconic. As for what this will contain, it imagine it to be some aggressive Journey-like arena rock.

Album Review: So this is a gentle mix of southern bluesy rock and piano based pub tracks with some god influence ("He Let Me Love"). The songs on this album do mix it up, as there is also a little funk, some vague motown sound, and slow, harmonic "sexy" r&b. He was the lead singer & guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad. And through struggle and strife (father's early death, pacemaker, son's accident, fired from GFR & legal battles, finding god) he has come out the other end still playing music. The songs on this album do mix it up, as there is also a little funk, some vague motown sound, and slow, harmonic "sexy" r&b.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Charlie. Pretty tough name to search for, but I like the dark desert highway energy on the cover + font...like a shady version of the show Night Rider. I'd love if this goes in a dark, synth-wave direction verging on disco, alas, no synth on the back cover credits.

Album Review: The band has gone through 9 different line ups since starting in 1970 with six albums preceding this one, and they are still active through 2015. Based on the vocals and production, I would have never guessed they were from London, but this was mainly a Terry Thomas outfit, but for this album, under US label requirements, they needed to find a new singer, and Slesser was auditioned in, sounding just like Steve Perry. They blame their lack of UK success on the rise of punk, and found fairer lands here in the US, with four minor hits. There is a lot of hair energy in this album, lots of power chords and high kicks in tight leather pants. Save the monster power ballad "Spend My Life With You." "Never Too Late" has a little bit of Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" in it.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the cover and back, they definitely think of themselves as ladies men, but I see them as a small town band playing to hometown class reunions and high school football games. I still guess it will be pub rock or power pop.

Album Review: Even though they are a Jersey band, the middle America vibe is strong with this one, as the songs are set for arena rock if the arena is a local VFW or friend's wedding. They do explore some extra curricular instruments like synth sounds and smooth harmonies, but at their root, they are a power-pop band sounding like Journey or Kansas.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but from the cover, i think it looks like a hard core band, with the blotchy semblance of some sort of military person with a gun artwork, and the stenciled band name. But the 70's AOR looking portraits of the dude-band definitely give the band a light, friendly perception. The photo interpretation outweighs the artistic usage, so i'm going with the light, 70's AOR harmony-filled power pop over the artwork, which is probably just emphasizing the band name, with nothing more to read into it.

Album Review: This is their 6th album in 6 years (since '75), but they go back to 1965, and are still active today (2020).  It is the first to be produced without Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive). This album followed a greatest hits record, which was the best selling Canadian record of all time, reaching 6x-Platinum status. They are in the top five best selling Canadian bands of all time, and have won many awards, including the Juno for band of the year in 1980. The songs are definitely in the power-arena rock genre, which makes sense. By this time, they had the biggest Canadian record of all time, so they produced music for where they'd need to play. But they also power up some oldies styled pop tunes and modernize them. "Are You Still My Baby" sounds awfully familiar...perhaps I've heard it before, as it is not a cover. And "Dump That Creep" is downright fun driving (ans humorus) New Wave track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. Here is another design with a graph/grid pattern across the cover & back. The mannequin front and band in the same pose on the back says....something? That they could be anybody? The hair and aesthetic of the band photo screams pub rock, so i'm guessing it will be a variety of that.

Album Review: The band has ties to Aerosmith, growing up in the New England music scene. David Hull has been a long time fill in bassist on tour. Charlie Karp began his career along side of Hull, and has produced many commercial jingles for companies like Xerox and Twix, but passed away in 2019. The music here is power pop, with some pub and arena rock threads. Nice harmonies at times, and never aggressively heavy.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Private Lightning, but it looks like a million other power pop new wave bands. The heartbeat looking line across the front and back of the album, the black band uniform and dated haircuts all seem to note that they are a tight power pop band taking advantage of New Wave's push. 

Album Review: As theorized, they sound like every other harmonized power pop band from the 80's. There are bits of uniqueness, like when the violin spotlights the backing melody on Bright City, and the some lyrics are quite poetic. It seems they had a very positive appreciation around the Boston area, as many of the things written about them are nostalgic, and report of their live show being much  better than the record. Furthermore, there is evidence that their record was toned down compared to their rough cut, which was closer to their true nature.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist, but he looks like a simple Americana singer songwriter

Album Review: The album takes Power Pop to the arena rock level, some echos, some power chords, and lots of opportunity for mainstream rocking and ELO Steely Dan harmonies. And obviously i don't know my Prog bands very well, or i'd probably have know Wetton's name as associated with Asia or King Crimson, or any other number of popular bands listed above. He has had a very long and superstar life, which gives reason to his arena rock sound as a solo artist. He passed away in 2017.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of Spider. But i really like all the angular artwork and body positioning on the cover and back. It gives a real sense of urgency and energy. The outfits speak of a rough and tumble yet well groomed and fashionable group from the streets.

Album Review: So this is another in a long string of bangs capturing that Joan Jett look and Runaways sound, combined with a little more friendly Pat Benatar sound added in. It feels like a radio friendly version of street raised ethics. The opening song actually has a riff that sounds like it was stolen for ElecMan's stage in Megaman 1. Both Anton Fig and Holly Knight have had stellar careers, working with many different stars in drums & songwriting respectivly. Knight has had many hits & award winning songs recorded that she wrote or co-wrote.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band...but the band pic on the cover looks like a bunch of roughnecks who were told by A&M's CEO to weat bright pastels, cause that's the look that sells right now. Even the spine is a rainbow of pastels. The live action shots on the back look like they're an energetic power-pop / pub band.

Album Review: These tracks are arena ready Journey tunes with a bunch of ELO harmonies. Been reviewing a bunch of albums that all sound like this style...so it seems the studios had a template that they'd throw $$$ at to hope and see what sticks. Not to say they could not add in their own identity...Robosexual is a little silly about a robot girlfriend & being attracted to robots, but it is a fun, driving song. It looks like between this album, and the Kehr brothers follow-up band (with a third Kehr) Urgent, there is really nothing else these gentlemen did in music.

Unknown-ness: I’ve never heard of them. But being a live album, and proclaiming with a sticker on the front, that it features the song “shakin’ all over,” they must be somewhat popular. But not to me, be it fortunately or unfortunately. I like the blurred artwork and the font on the cover; both give me an impression that it might be a punk-like effort. I also like the energy captured in the shots on the back, which give them a more hard rock and roll vibe.

Album Review: From what I’ve read, I probably should have heard of them. They are said to be a very inspirational and important band in the history of Irish folk/rock. They were very popular in Ireland, where they are from, and are somewhat responsible for the blend of traditional Celtic music and rock, or were one of the first popular bands to do so. This is a live album near the end of their (first) run.

“Trouble (With a Capital T)” introduces us to the band with the crowd in Belfast chanting the band’s name. Cheers as they take the stage are followed by a jammy sound that also lends itself to prog (such is the verse). This song features traditional Irish instrumentation mixed with rock guitars and bass. The vocals are deep and nasally.
“The Man Who Built America” begins with what sounds like an old carousel organ. Then vocals are added and quickly followed with guitars, and this is a straightforward arena rock pop song. It has a Mellencamp feeling of middle-America, but the song is simpler and catchier. The flute is nicely layered right below the verse. It is a tremendously positive song.
“The Warm Sweet Breath of Love” is started with synth prog keys, and it delves into a skip-step pop-rock song. I’m reminded of the Blasters here, but with better vocals. Maybe a little of Wings too.
“The Power & the Glory” progs out with a very wizardry keyboard sound. It also has heavy guitars to balance out the keys. The vocals are light and uninspired, much like southern rock. It is catchy, but it feels like it could fit well on a ZZtop album. Although the fiddle in the instrumental bridge stakes claim to its Irish heritage.
“Blindman” comes in with no break. It is a quiet earthy medieval prog song. It would feel at home in a movie like Excalibur. I don’t know them very well, but I imagine this is a good example of Yes’s sound. The rock value is added as the song progresses, along with a nice new wave organ sound.

“Shakin' All Over” initiates side two with a power rock groove. It is immediately driving and feels bluesy at the same time. Perhaps a heavier J Geils Band. There is a long rocking instrumental, with the electric guitar hammering away as the repetitive groove chugs along. It exits into the chorus nicely, and the song picks up without missing a beat. It ends in a grinding energetic instrumental marathon, and the crowd goes wild.
“King of the Fairies” has is a pounding drum and guitar rhythm at the outset. And it just gets heavier from there with a violin/fiddle then flute added, the band really gives a nice display of blending Celtic and Rock music here. Oh, and its all instrumental.
“Guests of the Nation” has a Who & lighter AC-DC feel to it. It is another simple catchy powerful song. It features a new wave organ, which gives it that feeling of an A’s song. There is a power pop bridge with the chorus sung over it near the end of the song.
“Dearg Doom” starts with traditional flute and drums. Then wah-wah guitars and effects bring the song up to a metal/prog style. It is a long instrumental introduction (3 min), and grows in its impatience with wailing metal guitars and a hurried slightly disco bass/drum beat. There are even elements of psychedelic rock with the keys in the background. This is supposedly their first big single, and they indulge the audience with a long extended jam session version.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of these guys, but the definite prog cover...a metaphoric flat earth, trapped in a Superman-like 2-d jail hovering in space over a digital longitude and latitide earth (presumablly), amde it interesting. As most music from 1979, it can be quite the suprise package, of good rock hidden beneath packaging nightmares, but I have a feeling this is going to be an arena, AOR, rock record. Dreams of a sell-out stadium, but only half-filling a club seems to be the idea i'm drawing.

Album Review: Apparently these guys were local favorites in the Baltimore/Washington DC area, and have even recently (10 yrs recently) performed successful reunion shows. But they were your basic rock/prog/guitar rock band with catchy layered songs and no record company push to make them big. The kind of band that seems to have been a dime-a-dozen back in the late 70's. Oh, and the name comes from the Dune universe. Totally Prog.

“Red Shoes” is a powerful introduction to the band. It is full of swagger and a bar room rock band feel. It contains confidence, and a chorus of shouts mixed in with the smooth vocals for the verse. Its like a jangely Black Crows or J. Geils Band. The end of the song features a long and meandering guitar solo.
“Can't Stand Still” is full of 70’s power rock. This is a little more dark and lurky than the opening track. The guitar solo is used in the middle of the song, and feels much more a part of the song this way. The build into the chorus is catchy, if anything, a little too short.
“Change” begins with an organ, sounding slightly carnival in nature. And the song picks up with the style and creeks into a slow groove. The vocals remind me of Queen here. It feels like it is building toward something more powerful. When the power does come, it is still with the same slow groove, not a change of pace like I was hoping for. Until we get to the 2:10 mark, the song takes off and feels like Queen still, but covering a Twisted Sister song. And it stays rocking out to the end.
“If I Could Kiss You” notes their power-ballad. It has strong power pop hooks, and emits a confident tempo. It feels like a Journey song: something I suspected they would eventually get around to sounding like, but finally, here it is.
“The Sphinx” returns to the dirty & gritty bar band sound. It just sounds sleazy. Even the chorus, which features a nice harmonized group effort, reeks of spandex and hair. The guitar has the same tone and quality as the iconic “Money For Nothing” guitar. A lead guitar solo wraps the song and the side up nicely.

“Cry Baby” was the favorite track from a couple of fan reviews I read. It begins with a section that sounds like royalty entrance music. Then the bass line comes in and the tone drastically changes to be darker. The instrumentation seems simpler in this song. The bass carries a nice and fun groove through out the song. And the synth brings back the royal treatment. It is a clash of two styles, and it is meshed well together. It is a little drawn out with the guitar and extended repetition of the chorus, but it too finishes well.
“Heart's At Home” is another ballad-type. It is begins quiet and the vocals are sung over faint guitars. Then it kicks in a little with drums, and over all, the feel of the song is sadness.
“Hard To Please” immediately sounds like another song I can’t quite place right now, but the melody is racing through my head…wait…it’s a Phil Collins song…”That’s All”…actually a Genesis song. This song has the same sound to the background, it is just executed a little differently. Actually, “That’s All” is a few years after this, so perhaps it was stolen that way. I cannot review this; because I just keep thinking that it’s gonna break into the more familiar melody. But over all, it feels like it breaks style for the band/album a little.
“Time Bomb” blends right into the end of the previous song, and this song starts as only vocals and bass. The vocals have a bit of augmentation on them, where they ring out in reverb in the back. Then the chorus hits in duplication, and it feels like a straight forward head-banging metal track. The guitar in the instrumental section is really fun, and feels video-gamey. The back and forth rhythm really stands apart and is a shining moment on this album. They could just stick with the simple head banging stomp, but they change and do more with the melody and that is a fun and great thing. And at the end I just got a slap in the face that the bass line reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop.”
“When You Said” sounds like a Bee-Gee’s pre-disco post 60’s ballad. It is quiet, whispy and poppy. It is a nice orchestral, mood softening closing song.

Unknown-ness: I’ve never heard of this band, but I was very interested in it with the Party vibe of the cover, and the pseudo scientist lab coats researching…rock! Or so it seems, with the Hall & Oats look, and a 1983 date, I was hoping for some sort of party rock music. Covering Gary Glitter’s Rock & Roll pt 2 is probably the best example of what I would be looking for, and there is a cover of it here. This seems silly, rock driven, and an overall fun atmosphere. I hope it translates that way in the music too.

Album Review:“Doctors of the Universe” starts out powerful, driving and aggressive. Like a song you’d listen to, in order to pump yourself up for a big sporting event. It has revving, building guitars, and an 80’s stylized tinkling keys that you’d expect to be in some training montage in a Rocky film (actually the keyboard alone reminds me of the Goonies). The vocals are dual layered giving it an urgent, crisp, and harmonic delivery. Its an overall fun song, with somewhat ridiculous lyrics.“Intellectual Freedom for the Masses” had a guitar hook that gives me the image of elementary school bully mockery. It’s hard and cutting, but it is still playful, and with a make-fun-of tone. The rhythm of the song, as it is based on the guitar hook, has a start stop feel to it, and the whole song feels stripped down. The dual vocals remind me of what Squeeze does, but it is not backed by incredible music
“Rock & Roll pt 2” is the Gary Glitter cover. It is pretty straight forward, with the only changes being a little heavier guitar, and a bigger, echoing vocals. It comes off as a little more sinister, darker. Also, thanks to Appice, bigger drums.

“The Song That Wrote Itself” introduces itself with drums, then adds down & dirty guitar and equally scraggily echoing, layered vocals. It does not feel like it was crafted especially caringly, it has the feel of a short drum and bass looped with repetitive shout/chanting vocals.
“Party Tested” has a nice stomp drum beginning. Synth keys are added in this side to side sway/stomp. The Goonies synth sound is utilized again, and it just sounds so familiar like it’s been sampled in other songs, or has such a specific sound / time period, that it is very familiar. This sound has more of the shout/chant vocals. Altogether, it feels like Twisted Sister, if they decided to write less catchy sports arena pep songs and redneck dance party jams, and only used background vocals. “The Recipe for Life” has more of a Robert Palmer feel to it with the use of the synth. We revisit the urgent vocals from the first track, and adds that feeling of a poor man’s Difford & Tillbrook. It’s just heavier than Squeeze.
“What About” begins with a fun dancy bass beat, that brings feels a tinge of disco. The chorus, as repetitive as it is, has the most uplifting and positive mood on the album. It is paralleled & bolstered by a fun bursting guitar hook solo. The vocals are still that shout/chant. Some of the verse sections have juxtaposing dark, militaristic tones. But the chorus breaks free of the darkness, like the power that only comes from rebelling mass mob.

Unknown-ness: I’ve never heard of Detective, even if their name sounds familiar, it is a very generic sounding name. I picked it up because it’s bold, sleek cover art. The solid black background with the white outlined logo looks simple, yet elegant, in a great rock and roll / new wave way. The picture of the band on the back looks part easy rock and part disco, which might just be the year’s style, but is a little off-putting. However, there is a sticker on the back/top that allows the LP to be hung on a rack at a store, much like an action figure or bag of hard candies. Just picturing this record hung on a shelf of K-Mart or something also added to the mystery and intrigue of the album.

Album Review: A super group of sorts, all the members, aside from the drummer have had more popular stints in other musical ventures. The front man has been in many many acting gigs, and the musicians from Yes & Steppenwolf add a great deal of experience. Altogether, they are reported to be Led Zeppelin enthusiasts, adopting their hard/classic rock style. (Bobby Pickett is not the same as the writer of the Monster Mash, even if Wikipedia will take you to Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s entry with its link).
“Recognition” skips a lot on my version, so I cannot do a proper review. But I can off the bat agree with the critique of rod Stewart’s voice, I also feel like it is a bit rhaspier version of Steve Perry. It is a slow groovy song with out much change in the vocal range. The chorus is backed up with multiple Ooooing voices repeating the title. It is a good intro to be band: a slight slimy rocker vibe and a relaxed groove.
“Got Enough Love” feels like it might head off into “Whole ‘Lotta Love” at any second. Other than what is contained in the lead vocals, the song does not have much energy or speed to it, but it is still a hard rock song. The tempo is slow, and trudging, and the over all construction is repetitive to nauseam. The song fades out slowly, adding echo effects on the Na na-na na’s.
“Grim Reaper” features nice short bursts of guitar, bass and drum nuggets of groove. The vocals rise for the sake of changing things up, and the music repeats in its little hook segments it lays out. But there is a lot of empty space in the song. Even in the instrumental section, where guitar effects are added to the mix, it still feels like the drums and bass are plodding along and forget to build into a grand song. It continues on its one-idea lines and becomes forgettable as it fades out. But still it is very much like Led Zeppelin
“Nightingale” begins as the slow ballad. The acoustic guitars are picked and the vocals begin singing their metal lullaby, reminding me of Silent Lucidity. It is a nice comforting hook, if it were not sung by the stereotypical metal voice, it might just hold that caring validity. Around 3 min, the tempo picks up and changes styles completely, and the song becomes a very fun and poppy Queen-esq power ballad.

“Detective Man” has more of the countrified hard rock, slightly bluesy, totally south of the Mason-Dixon line rock feel to it. There is even a honky-tonk piano stifled down in the back of the mix. This is making me think of ZZ Top, from the little of what know of them. “Ain't None of Your Business” begins with swirling guitars and an air of mystery. The name detective is great for the style of sleazy rock music that for some reason conjures a dark alley amateur stalker/detective. This is hard rock burgeoning on metal. It is another of the songs that just sounds like it is missing elements. The basics are just too plain and bare bones to sound like they are anything more than skeletons or blueprint demos.
“Deep Down” follows the dark back-alley ways of the preceding song, into sadness and lonely depression. This is the first song I would associate with prog, as the sad guitar speaks volumes for the mood/songscape that the music is creating. The synth element comes into set up the transition from section to section, making the song more than a hard rock instrumental, and turning it into a much more progressive style.
“Wild Hot Summer Nights” follows the instrumental with a start stop guitar, super funky bass & drum groove and “pick up the pieces” stylized boogie. But the chorus abandons all funkiness and credit, where it becomes a straightforward soft rock number, just when it had so much going for it. I also believe that the lead singer has opted to step back and allow someone else to sing, as it is not as nasally, and quite a bit more soulful. The unfortunate thing is that the bass and drum funk is mixed down, and the electric guitar slaps all the essence out of the most fun part with its metal tendencies. But that might have been by choice since they are not a soul influenced dance band.
“One More Heartache” ends the record by beginning with a standard echoing drum beat. This could launch into an INXS song or an Aerosmith song. The confident and sleazy guitar adds their stylized character to the song, and the song falls into the repetitive musical loop with vocal innovation offering the only element that changes up the song. It still feels a bit empty, especially in the musical breakdown. The song ends in a frenzied finalizing burst of the instruments, in typical climactic breakdown. And it is justified, because it is the end of the record too.
