Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band...and since i only have the CD, there is not much to go buy. From the song names and the band name, plus year this was released, they sound like a made-for-tv metal band, like something that would have appeared on Married With Children. I know Andy Wallace's name from Faith No More producing and other bands of that type, so perhaps hair metal is spot on. And spacing matters with this band...as they are not the Radioactive Cats, they are Radio Active...as if they are dudes who are active on the radio.

Album Review: The songs are a touch southern roots rock while singing about metal themes of women, love on the run, and roses. The songs are not that threatening, but i wonder if that is just time and the genre pushing the bar up since 1991 that makes it sound almost quaint. "Knock Knock" sounds like a metal singer fronting Cake, which is strangely enjoyable. They suffered the wrong band at the wrong time syndrome, as Alt-Grunge was picking up speed just as they were releasing this debut. Not entirely hair band metal and not classic rock inspired grunge at all, their cover-all-basis music made them a band that was stopped before it started

Unknown-ness: I had never heard of this band. From the cover, I'm hoping it will be some solid poppy girl RnB, like Seduction, Vanity 6, of En Vogue. I fear it is a little early for that, and is smack dab in the middle of disco, so i won't be surprised if it tackles that genre.

Album Review: The album is just straight disco, there are some elements of funk involved (Wear it Out, Footstompin' Music, Put On Your Rollerskates). It is also not all light rn'b (Dreams Come True, Take Me Back, I Just Imagined You) with smooth Supremes-like harmonies. "Runnin' From the Law" and "Lowdown Dancing" are solid poppy funk with horns that remind me of Oingo Boingo, oddly enough.

Accoring to IMDB, they were the Diamonds in the 1978 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie and recorded the theme song to the 1977 Richard Pryor film "Which Way is Up." This is their third album, first on WB's after departing MCA. As a band, the lasted for two more records (as a duo, minus Anderson) and broke up in 1983.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. At first, when i bought the record, i thought it would be a new age sort of album: abstract/fossil art & the band name font suggested as much. But the band image on the back and sleeve, prompted me to change my guess to Smooth Jazz...1987 was a solid year for both genres. But since the band consists of family members with Winans as the last name, and songs like Real Meaning of Xmas & How Can You Live Without Christ, i now believe this will be some sort of christian cult gospel band with smooth jazz leanings.

Album Review: Smooth RnB spirituals starts from the first track, with vocals layered over each other, and what sounds to be all synth production. I can automatically tell, this is not an album for me, and had to turn it off before the last song finished. I know Anita Baker is on the first (Grammy winning, top 20 R&B charting) track, "Ain't No Need to Worry," and it was weird hearing Michael McDonald on "Love Has No Color."

The band / family (10 siblings) has kept their religious beliefs close to their hearts, with most surviving members still preaching or recording gospel records. All this despite a strict upbringing of no music (other than gospel) or theater/movies/TV. They've won grammys and one sibling, not on this record, CeCe (Pricilla) is the #1 selling gospel artist of all time. This is the fifth of their records and it reached #1 on the Gospel Album Chart (Billboard), and they are revered for updating gospel's sound by mixing in Soul & RnB.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this singer / band. From the cover photo and the band photo on the back, I imagine this will be nasally, anxious, neurotic, jittery, catchy-as-hell power pop. I'll actually be slightly upset if it is not...perhaps i'm setting too high a bar, surly to lead to disappointment.

Album Review:  From the first track, Vanwarmers voice is delicate and warm, a little like Ric Ocasek  but an octave higher. The opening two tracks mixes power chords with jangleypop melodies and throws in some keys and synth to keep up with appearances in the 80's. Much of the rest are lighter ballads, that harken back to simple oldies and classic country, and a couple would fit right in to today's breezy island pop sound, even if it is not all synthesized.

Vanwarmer was a friendly, well liked musician who passed away too early at 48 years old from leukemia, a year after diagnosis. He had a short, bright career in pop, with the #1 single "Just When I Needed You the Most," a song that his wife sued Warner/Chappell for copyright ownership. Soon after his first 3 records, he transitioned to writing Country songs when "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" which already sounds like a country ballad, was covered by the Oak Ridge Boys. Other musicians Charley Pride, Michael Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Alabama (and many more) converted his songs to hits. Upon his death a portion of his ashes were sent into space.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them, but with the bright primary colors, matching outfits, they reminded me of Squeeze or Joe Jackson (not Madness with the similar poses, however) to me when i bought it at an Oxfam charity shop in London, so I'm guessing this will be Catchy New Wave.

Album Review: They have big band character, but often settle for power pop tunes, often reminding me of the little i know of Jackson Brown and sometimes sounding like John Fogerty / CCR. Not much new wave here, except their songs are short swinging pop songs that have a lot of brass, and could be swept into a Joe Jackson camp. I was not aware this is a Paul Young band after his former Streetband. I only know Young was a singer because of his solo album i reviewed a while ago, but he does add a little Blue Eye Soul to the tracks here and there. They were a reportedly very fun and popular live act in the early 80s. At the very least, Paul Young is still actively playing out live (2020). This record was reissued in 2013 with live & bonus tracks.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this musician, but the cover looks like a racing checkered flag on an 80's video screen, so my initial though it that this is going to be some long hair power pop. The nerdy tweed-clad person on the back counters that idea, but i still don't know what this will be...singer songwriter perhaps?

Album Review: This album is full of synth-heavy harmonic new wave and prog rock. The titles definitely create a nerdy, science and mythical world. The vocals are nasally, somewhere between Brian Eno and Duran Duran. Most of the songs on side 2 are instrumental soundscapes, exploring the effects and limits of programmable music, and others are just synthy power pop with guitar solos and layered harmonic choruses. Roger Powell was the keyboard player in Todd Rundgren's Utopia, thus the appearance of Rundgren on the album. Powell was right there in the beginning of the Moog synthesizer, as a protege to its creator, Bob Moog and has been at the forefront creating and writing articles about synth technology. He also created the first hand held remote synth controller and called it the Powell Probe. He's worked at many electronics/audio companies, including his time as a senior programmer for both Apple computers and Electronic Arts, and created one of the first PC MIDI sequencers for the Apple II called Texture in 1985.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But the black & white w/ minimal yellow cover art of the OXO repeating over and over has a feeling of a synth band, although the photo on the back has a 70's power pop vibe.

Album Review: OXO, not to be confused with the home kitchen gadgetry company or tic-tac-toe video game from 1952, was a "one hit wonder" band with top 40 Adam Ant-ish, swingy single "Whirly Girl" (about Ish's wife). Overall, this album has a harmonic island dance boy band style going on. "My Ride" has some Devo & Thomas Dolby elements, but is much more overproduced with the slick, tinny mid 80's synth sound. "In the Stars" sounds like a Pointer Sisters song. 2007's real footage documentary and 2015's comedy remake, both called Frank & Cindy is about bassist Frank Garcia odd marriage told by his filmmaker stepson. 2015 casts Oliver Platt as Frank & Renne Russo as Cindy.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but it cover makes them look like a dark, pub band with back-alley musical style. The font, however, looks computer-generated, but that might feed into the spy theme with instructions for a secret mission. Still going to assume this is Pub Rock.

Album Review: The music is much more synthetic and new wave, similar to a cold, future concept album like Mr. Roboto, with dark, sanitized synth beats juxtaposed with an emotive singer, sometimes singing with a Devo-like monotone. "Suburban Dream" has a bit of a Police-like reggae melody to it. O K sounds a little like Roxy Music's "The Strand." The synthy part of "Cleek" reminds me of Adam Ant's talk-singing. "The Extra" is fun Power-Pop still keeping a toe in future synth sounds, but "Ha Ha Ha" sounds out of place on the album, like a Supertramp song.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. I remember picking this up off the wall of an Oxfam over in the UK on honeymoon, not knowing what it was, but hoping it was some Psychedelic British 60's band I was about to discover.

Album Review: Well, this is a UK pressing of the record, but the band is american, from Santa Cruz. Similar to The Happenings, they repackaged older songs and gave them their own personal touch to their covers. But unlike Happenings, this album is lighter and feels about 10 years older than Psycle, like an archaic Baroque pop vocal style. Their biggest it was covering Simon & Garfunkel's 59th Street Bridge Song a year before this album in 1967. There is a certain Pet Shop Boys quality to the "ahhh" chant in the chorus of "Mad" as well as a Belle & Sebastian vibe to the trumpet melody.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, and they look like a typical, quirky jangle-pop college radio band. I mean, a stuffed armadillo by a campfire in the back photo?

Album Review: The album starts off with a bouncy, catchy garage-psych keyboard with a vocal cadence of Dylan. Also hints of Half Japanese and Dead Milkmen for their rough production values. While this meandering psych album all but embraces the "Paisley Underground" & "New Sincerity" tags, the apparently went on to become part of the cowpunk/roots scene in LA, paving the way for acts like Son Volt & Wilco.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But they look like fun; with lots of energy, waving emergency silver blankets about, proudly drunk and showing their varied excitements. Definitly going to be powerpop, but at what level? Light, Pub, New Wave, Arena?

Album Review: Turns out this is light, southern-bluesy power pop for the most part. The name comes from three brothers, making up more than half the band, so it make sense to use their last name. This is their second album of two, and i think I've seen their first one out and about: the cougar logo looks familiar. The album verges on rocking once or twice...the bass and synth in the closing track is a little dark, but the song is funky enough to stay above water. There are some nice smooth harmonies, and a little country rock infused, but overall, just another AOR album to add to the pile. Roll the Dice was covered by both Charlie (reviewed recently)and German metal band Rage

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But with the cover of mostly colors & angular shapes, i'm guessing more New Wave. The band image on the back supports that theory, even if it is just their faces.

Album Review: Someone wrote on the sleeve that this album "sounds like Elvis Costello." And they are not wrong. Nearly every moment on this record sounds like Elvis & The Attractions...and it hits beyond just the jittery nervous pop...the second track Suspicion has a vocal performance similar to "Watching the Detectives." Some times, he'll evoke something close to Tom Petty as well. The Beginning of "Victim of Circumstance" has different vocals for the verse, but a very Elvis-like chorus. Apparently, he now scores tv, film and corporate event films, including the animated Duckman and the Valley Girl soundtrack.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of  this band. But from the small ties on the back, and the pattenred clothing on the cover, I assume this will be some straight up New Wave, like Squeeze or maybe Cheap Trick.

Album Review: Billy Karloff (John Osborn) is a fresh breath of snotty punk, with a full, thick British accent and accompanying lip sneer. The lead guitars are lively power-pop, catchy-as-hell, and full of a very angsty, youthful energy. Don't Keep Me Down is like an updated Buddy Holly track, with as much oldie and rockabilly qualities to it as punk. Karloff died of throat cancer in 2003, but to much my surprise there is no Wikipedia page about him.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this, but I love the cover. The hot, neon colors, the angular "glasses" over the eyes, the angular logo, and the suits with thin ties scream new wave, yet I get the feeling that this will be an album full of disco-like R&B. Perhaps it is the song titles and lengths. Maybe it will be a cross between the two genres. All I know, is that I had to buy this once I saw it.

Album Review: So Watson and Beasley are the two main performer’s last names…and here I had them under “B” when they should be “W.” Change made. There is not much on the interwebs about this duo. They approach disco from a pop/rock standpoint, incorporating rock guitars and some new-wavish synth effects. The album seems to have been re-released on CD in 2006. Alfred Beasley is now a preacher and still into music as a way of getting his message across, and was an award winning drummer when he went to Tennessee State.

“Darlin I” starts with a new wave edge: guitars and some bouncy synth piano. The female vocals begin and are rich, and produced with a disco flair. The power chords continue throughout the song, as does the piano buried in the back of the track. The steady marching drum gives a feeling of confidence. The male vocals support the lead, and are just as high in pitch. In the middle of the song, the bass line becomes bouncy and is combined with a spastic synth whistling flutter that adds more of a disco element. The guitar becomes a bigger part of the song in the later half, jamming out with miniature solos toward the end and as the song fades out.
“Body Free” has a simple two note drum beat in the beginning, and is layered over with some synth effects that propel the dance tempo forward into the realm of disco. The bass beat is confident and the space-age synth effects glisten in the background. The backing harmonized female vocals in the chorus come in to support the powerful lead. The thing about these tracks are that they are catchy and designed to repeat in order to create an anticipatable dance routine. So once they hit upon their sturdy hook, they cycle out as long as they can, and end in fades.
“Dimensions” has an angelic choir of Ahhh-ahhs and swirling harps for the first 45 seconds. Then a hip slow dance melody takes form with the harps and male vocals gently glide over the slow jam. The song slowly picks up the pace and by the second half of the song, it finds its feet as a shuffling dance groove.
“Helpless” is a steady bouncy bass line under a single strummed jangley note. The soulful female vocals carry the song along the disco melody. A backing choir of female vocals takes the production back to a comparison to Supremes or Ronettes.

“Breakaway” was the big single that came out with lots of remixes. It immediately jumps up and down with a no nonsense driving tempo and jittery melody. The production of the vocals and backing vocals paired with the looping bass line places the song firmly in the disco category. With a different execution of the vocals, this could easily have been a nervous new wave hit. Each section has its own distinct twist on a common hook. In the breakdown section toward the end, the bass line quits displaying the drum beat and some twinkling synth chimes like shooting stars.
“Don't Let Your Chance Go Bye” was also a single. It is a little funkier; with a bass groove that steps wider across the music landscape. The vocals are multi layered like a choir, and it jumps right into what sounds like the chorus. The tempo is not as driving, and gives way for slower and slicker disco dance moves. The happy groove is enhanced by an upbeat precise guitar section.
“Fantasy Island” begins with a windy effect, and some show tune guitars with a jazzy progressive beat. The choir of vocals acts like another instrument in the beginning, but once the solo female vocals begin, they take on an organic, loungey path of their own. This reminds me a little of Sunshower by Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah band.
“What's On My Mind” embraces new wave with a sinister, metallic synth beat. Then a piano is introduced, and the high female vocals ease in, giving balance to the original notes. This is a toe tapping disco song, with simple, repetitive musical support and a constant stomping drum beat. The shady synth melody returns, combated with power guitar chords, but it quickly resumes the disco distinction, utilizing the chorus of female vocals in backing support of the lead in the chorus. Toward the end it is a call and response between the female lead, and the high male vocals. But the dark two note bass beat never rests.
