Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. The solid color, black plastic CD case + the logo font make me think this will be some bad Nu Metal or Hard Ska. The year is 1994, so there was a harder edge to Alt music being put out that might have been back-catalogued as early Nu Metal, since the major labels like Columbia/Sony threw money at what they hoped would be the next thing. Not expecting anything good here, but maybe the low bar will make for a surprising enjoyment.

Album Review: While the album starts with a reggae refrain of the band name, the rest of the album is of the hard alt rock and some funk metal genres. Driving bass and drums mix in with flourishes of funky guitar rhythms and some jazzy vocals to keep the listener guessing. Seems like Dave Matthews fronting a poor man's version of Faith No More.

Bass & Drums were what held the band together. After a tour with Living Colour, the guitar and vocalist left, and Sears & Summers joined, eventually signing to Columbia & putting this, their second full length out. They only survived for 2 more years, a total of 8.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. While the date is 1982, the cover looks like a millennial angular pop-punk offering. The bleak two tone color scheme give them a darkness to the music, potentially. But i really don't know what's going to be on here...based on their pics, they look like a new wave band, so let's go with that.

Album Review: This record is really great. Two vocal styles from two vocalists round out the good with a Jonathan Richmond style voice, and a Peter Weller style vocal, with music to complement both styles. The songs can be a little jangly like the Alarm, but a good recent comparison would be to the UK band, the Rifles. It feels like the third or fourth catalogue offering of a previously raucous punk band who has aged well and lost a bit of their driving, angsty edge, yet this is their debut.

This record received substantial airplay for college and underground radio stations via the record label's connection to CBS/Columbia, particularly their anthem "Everywhere That I'm Not." They release 4 albums in the 80's then quit, and reformed 26 years later to release another album, two best-ofs and a handful of new singles. One of their biggest inspirations was the Beatles, and they sounded so much like them, that many Beatles fan thought their 1983 cover of "Cry for a Shadow" was a new recording by the living members in time for the Beatles Anthology release in 1995.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks like it will be straight up Reggae made to heal the world. Like the matching white outfits.

Album Review: While the album does have many reggae vibes, much of the production, sound and vocal performances are more in line with straight up smooth R&B, and dip a toe into disco on some of the tracks (Dancing on the Floor). "Who Gave You" sounds a little like Elvis Costello's "Ship Building" or "Almost Blue."
With  over 47 years (1973 formation) and 9 Grammy nominations, Third World is one of the longest lasting reggae bands of all time, often blending/fusing reggae with R&B, Funk, Pop and Rap, giving them cross-genre appreciation. Their biggest success was in '78 with their cover of the O'Jays "Now That We Found Love," which was the basis for the Heavy D's 1991 cover. This album was their first with Columbia after leaving Island records. Both Rugs & Carrot have passed away in 2014 & 2018 respectively, but the band still records and performs.

  • Eddie Leonetti - Producer
  • Lee De Carlo - Engineer
  • Jay Krugman - Asst. Engineer
  • Rod O'Brein - Asst. Engineer
  • David Krebs - Direction
Unknown-ness: Never heard of Rex, but that could be short for, or have changed for a number of acts. The cover and band photo make him look to be a typical power pop with a prog edge, with a touch of androgyny.

Album Review: The album is def power pop, but leans heavy on hard rock and glam. Many songs sound like they are going to transition into ZZ Top's "Tush." Vocals take cues from Robert Plant. But the album sounds good with talented musicians and a solid, thick, heavy rock feel, typical of the mid-70's era. The album is attributed to a band named "Rex" but most cataloging databases file this as a Rex Smith album, and i'm following suit. His pretty-boy looks made him a teen idol in the late 70's and early 80s. Rex was just as poplar as an actor as a music. This album came 2 years before he made his debut on broadway in Grease. He was also in the tv series Street Hawk, and is the Quizzo answer to "Who is the first live action actor to portray Marvel Comic's Daredevil." He has had two  top 40 singles with "You Take My Breath Away" (#10 and was on his soundtrack to the film he also starred in Sooner or Later) in 1979, and "Everlasting Love" (#32) as a duet with Rachel Sweet. You can get a personal message made from Rex for $75 bucks on Cameo.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Mountain. I picked this up in a Goodwill Thrift record stack along side a Mothers of Invention album, so I assume this is going to be similar: odd, avant garde pop. Their band name artwork looks a little spiritual/renaissance/baroque/new agey, so it might go that direction, too.

Album Review: The album's studio side has a theatrical, rock opera, concept theme going on (about drug abuse in Vietnam), perhaps a little like some of early Ween's classic rock, face melting songs, even if this record is not that face melting. Side B is recorded live at the Fillmore East in 1971. The first "track" is a 24 min 30 sec medley that has Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" mixed in. Leslie West was the main artist behind Mountain, as the band name is taken from West's first solo album, which refers to his large size and stature. They were a unique sound, blending elements that they were able to fit together very naturally. They soared at Woodstock's Saturday Night stage, only the band's fourth every live performance. After that, they released their first proper album, featuring the classic rock and cowbell hit Mississippi Queen, featured on here as a gritty, filthy live version. Pappalardi was shot & killed by his wife in 1983, and she served about a year in jail. With him gone, West and Laing have regrouped and recorded Mountain albums off an on into the aughts. Some verison of Mountain will still perform today with West & Laing composing the core.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Steve Khan. I like the artwork, reminds me of native american art with a lot of energy thanks to the arrows. My guess is this is overthought, conceptual new wave, but an act that had a good sound at the same time.

Album Review: So this is jazz fusion, akin to Brand X or many dentist office soundtracks or elevators, even. Maybe some 80's tv shows that never made it out of pilot status. Khan is recognized for his groundbreaking expertise in Latin Jazz Guitar work and received two Grammy nominations. He called this album the last attempt to keep the sound of fellow contributors, the Breker Brothers' band going.

Unknown-ness: never heard of this band, but from the band name, lowercase font, color choice, and grittiness of the photo makes me think this is a good new wave band, maybe electronic & synth based, or maybe minimal and no wave. Perhaps like Martha & Muffins.

Album Review: So this is pretty straightforward power pop and a little pub rock. "Love It Again" has a little Police feel, but most has an ELO harmonic and Kinks pop feel: nothing too memorable or remarkable. Singer Shear was in a relationship with Aimee Mann at one point. Shear also created and hosted the first 13 episodes of MTV's Unplugged.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them. Cover and front and back photo look like any CSNY or Loggins and Messina record, so i am supposing it will be southern-bluesy rock. The gatefold newspaper liner notes & stories is a fun artistic choice, centered around their printing press name suggestion.

Album Review: Although the album begins with a collage of tracks layered over each other, sounding like a bit of chaos, the album is a soulful slice of country-blues rock. Singer Paul Cotton went on to replace Messina in Poco, and the band was instrumental in the formation of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were originally from Chicago, and along with The Flock, Aorta & Chicago, were touted as the "Chicago Sound" by Columbia Records, even through they had moved to LA. "Beauty" carries more Psych & California pop in it than the other tracks on the record.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but i'll be really surprised if this is not some sort of angular new wave band that might verge on punk, based on their outfits.

Album Review: While it is new wave, stealing or borrowing bits from Costello & Parker, there are also a lot of vocal cues taken from Buddy Holly. The songs feel like the artistic individuality of those other artists have been stripped away, leaving a compact and commercially fun, one-dimensional party band- not to say that is a bad thing. The upbeat happiness in these tracks far outweighs anything darker that may be implied from their name, or songs like "slay me," "bad timing" or "private eye." The vocals in "Kids Stuff" sounds very very similar to Elvis, even if the music a synthetic new wave that he'd never dream of. Supposedly, their second/final album is much better.

  • Patrick O'Hearn - Bass (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons more)
Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but from the angular lines and basic colors on the cover & negative images on the back, it looks like it may be some sort of new wave or post punk, reminding me of Wire's artwork. Even with the ocean themes: beach towel on the front and beach/water on the back, it still has a cold feel, enhanced further by the robotic factory name like Group 87.

Album Review: The album is all instrumental Jazz...but multiple forms of it: sometimes ambient, sometimes classical, sometimes video game or tv theme sounding, but much of the time futurist-prog. The music contained feels like it is breaching the gap between old-style songs while incorporating "modern day" production techniques and smooth synths. Their song titles do relate to the moods and soundscapes that the music creates. This was the first album for the trio Isham, Maunu, O'Hearn, but they forged a path into instrumental new age after this band, who actually had one more release in '84. Isham having the most illustrious and prolific career of the three, with award winning music and stemming into tv & films

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, and i'll be honest: the year 1986 made me quite hesitant to buy this, as much of this has the production styling of dead drums and one-dimensional synth smoothness. But i do like a good female fronted band, so i wanted to give this band a try. I'm still expecting adult contemporary pop with the bad late 80's production sound.

Album Review: And the sound is spot on...i still can't imagine what people were thinking when these studio albums came back and sounded like they were created entirely digitally without a soul. The band started in 1981, and enjoyed success with many singles, their biggest was Heaven (top 5 hit). Grace Knight and Bernie Lynch (he asked her, his then girlfriend, eventually short-lived wife, to be in his band Living Single as it was before a words-out-of-a-hat name change, (there was another Living Single)) still perform together as the Eurogliders as of 2018.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover art is exactly what many of today's island synth pop artists are going for. But for 1983, this is going to be some synthetic yacht rock

Album Review: Somewhere between and on a different plane than Lionel Ritchie's All Night Long and Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry Be Happy sits this slick, over produced set of adult contemporary sexy-mood setting tracks. None of it is really that good to want to put on to enjoy. It fails in the mass studio synthesization of music down to the bone, where nothing organic or raw can live. There may be talent in this group, but the glossy sheen on the one dimensional sound loses interest quite fast. Their first album, one before this one, contained the song they were most famous for, and never reached that peak again...Pauli Carman keeps the band going with s revolving cast and is still active (2020)

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band / singer songwriter. Looks like it will be some John Mellencamp Americana by the back photo, but perhaps mixed with some new wave tendencies based on the neon cover

Album Review: Apparently, I share a birthday with Billy, some 25 years later. He recorded his first record with Ricky Nelson at the age of 7, partially due to the fact that his father was famous performer, Dorsey Burnette, who even had him on tour at 3 1/2 years old. After many brushes with a slew of legendary acts and legendary acts who played songs he wrote, his biggest success was replacing Lindsay Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac: an experience that took him away from rockabilly/country music for a few years. The pub rock element comes through more than rockabilly on most of the songs. Most songs feel like demos, too...there is just something missing in the production.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But found both records together in a dollar section in a record shop in LA. Couldn't just buy one: what if it was good and i regretted getting both, or what if the OTHER ONE was better. There was no time to consult the interwebs. It was vacation. The albums look like the work of 2 different bands. the older, Sunbathing album has a Jokey Americana look to the cover, and a very wacky / spunky new wave look on the back. The '81 record, with the black and white, just got done painting, JC Penny's photo shoot, looks colder, much more serious, and like it will perhaps be jangle pop or euro-new wave.

Album Review: These two records comprise the whole of the Sinceros Catalogue. Pet Rock was recorded to be called 2nd Debut, but that was shelved & re-recorder / rearranged to form Pet Rock by Gus Dudgeon famous for producing much of Elton John's work since 1970. The first album has some soft edges to the new wave, and lots of smooth harmonies like ELO and even the Bee-Gees at times. The punkier songs Little White Lie and I Still Miss You are solid new wave songs.

Pet Rock starts off more methodically and jangly, such was the direction music was moving at the time. The whole album has a more mature sound, not necessarily better...it sounds a lot of the boring music being produced in the mid 80's, and for that, I guess it is ahead of its time slightly. "Girl I Realize" is a short but fun Motown inspired pop track.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. From the look of it, font of the band name, Jason hockey mask, and song titles, I'd assume they are some sort of horror/death metal band.

Album Review: This was the first record to be released under Chuck D’s imprint. The duo of Kendo and Gary G-Whiz worked with Chuck D in different capacities, and teamed up to make this record, but never followed up with anything further, perhaps due to lack of promotion of this product. There is a steady concept throughout the entire album, basically placing Hyenas in the Desert as the villain of a typical horror movie: which works, knowing how hyenas stalk their prey and mercilessly attack and kill, all the while cackling with their jarring laughter.

“Elephant Graveyard” echos with cymbals, cynical laughter and bird calls. A slow trip-hop beat starts, with vocals spoken over top. Even the vocals repeat like an echo in a cave.
“Can You Feel It” begins with hi-hat, and an eerie keyboard/piano melody. The pounding bass distorts when it blasts out in tempo. The rhyming starts with a mellow head nodding rhythm. The chorus is a little more melodic, but is still mostly spoken word rhyming in a style Eminem uses. Musically, it is not just a simple backing beat, there are female vocals underlaid and strings like Gangster’s Paradise.
“Wild Dogs” begins with a smooth, echoing bass line hook and steady drum beat. The rhyming is fast but not quite furious. There are support vocals echoing certain words and phrases or commenting uh-huh which bolsters the confidence and emphasis of the lead. The song ends with hyena type laughs, and the spoken album title completes the track.
“The Longest Night (Journal #1)” has more slow, trip hop drum and bass, along with some crystal-like keyboard notes. Lyrics are quiet, and spoken under the sinister beat.
“Concubinez” begins with spoken samples dialogue, and a three note honking synth effect sets the tempo. The crashing drum rhythm pushes the song forward with an array of rhyming lyrics. Twitters and tweaks on a electro/synth devise are use like record scratching.

“Why Me” is introduced with a bit of dialogue, and then a disco era tone rings through. The poetic rapping tells a story, and again is emphasized by a supporting vocal, but it does not rush through; instead, it is a calculated on tempo reflection. A second set of vocals picks up the second story/verse. The chorus is a repetition of why me, expressing the guilt and circumstances that have lead the singers to this point.
“Fresh Meat” is just a pack of laughing hyenas, which acts like a bookend between the last song and this song.
“Hyenas in the Desert” The tempo is quicker, more rushed, and the bass line is dense, reminding me of Bjork’s “Human Behavior.” The vocals rhyme and interchange with each other in a sort of spiral of who’s attention is in the foreground.
“Other Side of Midnight” comes in with a cackling laugh. This is like an eerie, X-Files type version of the previous song. It has a straight forward mid-tempo drum beat, with the rapid fire rhyming overtop. And the horror movie tense-inducing keyboard ends the album.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. But it looks like it will be terrible. I've never been a fan of the tedious looking, blurry album covers, that seem to evoke a meandering song style that is void of hooks, and just drones on for longer than each song should last. The songs are more about a melancholy atmosphere than actual energetic or exciting production. 1986 does nothing to stray my thinking otherwise.

Album Review:  Wire Train was active from the mid 80’s through early 90’s, putting out 5 major-label albums worth of music, six if you count the rejected album they self-released. They had some localized popularity, and even had a song make it into the Point Break film. Many of the band members went on to form the backing back to Sheryl Crow, and the drummer was part of the music collective that performed the opening credits to the American Office TV show.

“Last Perfect Thing” jams right into it with a pounding drum. Anthemic guitars play in support, only to be subdued to landscape-jangle pop once the vocals begin. The vocals are poetic as they overlap the minimal jangly music, reminding me of a subdued John Easdale of Dramarama. The chorus is a little more dynamic, incorporating the anthemic guitars back into the melody.
“Skills of Summer” starts with a jangly guitar, and glides into the dreamy, synth soundscape. The vocals sound wind-blown, and still have a poetic cadence. The urgency is raised in the chorus, but does not come off as threatening or urgent. The song ends with a more urgent refrain of the title, sung in the round.
“When She Was A Girl” has echoing, cave dripping synth chimes to start out the song. The guitars also sound grandious, echoing in there meandering, jangly loops. The song tries to build some momentum in the bridge, but the chorus pauses to suck the life out of the song…but not necessarily in a bad way, but in a reflective way. The bass is mixed to the front of the song as the song fades out the instrumental ending.
“God on Our Side” is a Bob Dylan cover. It kicks in to form a steady, upbeat rock tempo, under-laid with the jangle guitars, sounding much like the Alarm and other landscape-rock bands.
“Love, Love” begins with an echoing power pop guitar hook, and a rocking drum beat. Although there is still an echoing behind the vocals, reminding me of the Psych Furs, it is a very straightforward progressive rock song. Nearing the end, the song feels like it winds down, shedding musical layers to become a limping, reflective section, but it changes direction quickly, back into the catchy chorus.

“I Will” begins with slow jangly guitar strums, and then soars off with guitars to landscape rock land. The chorus has a guitar sound and hook that is relevant in the emo scene from a few years back. The song has a nice build to it, which is capitalized in the chorus.
“No Pretties” starts with quiet, swirling synth, and then the lead guitar starts in with a sad, reflective section. The song is gloomy and dark, taking me back to a Psych Furs comparison.
“The Ocean” has the same gloomy elements, but is recorded with a driving pace. Sterile, crystal, synth notes echo beneath the verse. The chorus is very good, however, with the way a supporting vocal sings Our Tears, as if in the round, on top of the lead vocals. It has very good timing, and makes a fun, interesting melody even better. It reminds me a little of EMF, actually, when it comes to the style of breathy, emotional vocals.
“Two Persons” sounds a lot like a Graham Parker or Elvis Costello song, anxious nasally vocals, and a thumping bass and drum beat. The guitar even sounds like it could be Elvis. The instrumental breakdown is back to the anthemic guitar sound, but it can be forgiven since the rest of the song is a great, driving ball of energy. The vocals are rushed through, and sound like they are just tumbling out of the singer’s mouth.
“Home” slows things down to a high school slow dance. The jangly guitar consists of slow chords and a bit of a waltz tempo, with a little of the song “Hallelujah’s” melody in the bass.
