Unknown-ness: There were a bunch of "Wolf" named bands back in the early 00's so i assume i had heard of these folks and saw the CD in a thift store a few years later, not knowing what they sounded like, but familiar with the name.

Album Review: Out of Montreal Canada, these electronic/techno clash artists have high party energy, and experimental effects all kept in line with solid guitar sounding melody and intense, driving tempos. Their buzzing synths and even some Ween-related sounds pump out coked-up, non stop rave vibes, like what i imagine Andrew W.K. to sound like. As of today (2024), their last record was out 5 years ago, but one look on their FB page shows they are still an active, touring band.

Unknown-ness: Not sure why i picked up this CD from the discount bin back in the late 90s...don't specifically remember the name or any of the songs. But it looks like something i'd be into... it has a poppy rock, DIY feel to it, including the band photo. So i'm going to guess it's along the lines of The Rentals or Fountains of Wayne.

Album Review: The music is on the lighter, jangly pop side, like the Posies, but it is catchy with clean hooks. Most of the songs bound forth with a happy bouncy demeanor, with a tinge of slacker delivery. "Rescue Us From Boredom" has a little of a Dismemberment Plan feel to its driving progression. "Stone Alone" has some slide guitar, giving it a little of an alt-country rock sound. "One Day" has a twee, jangly power pop sound, with a little psych.

This record was nominated for Juno's Alt record of the year up in Canada in 96, and was released on Sloan's murderecords label. The album was apparently re-released in the US as "Sticktoitiveness," so i'm guessing this is the original Canadian version. They did not remain a band for very long, only recording from 1994 - 1997, releasing a couple other EPs and a follow-up full length in that time. The band reformed a bunch of times in 2002, 2006, 2009, 2012, and made a third record in 2003.

  • Mike Mazza - Trumpet, Flugelhorn
  • Mieka Kohut - Viola
Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but with their artwork + duct tape, it is definitely going to be some Indie music with experimental tendencies and intriguing melodies, perhaps organic and naturally inspired +  noise...i'm thinking Need New Body / Man Man, perhaps (hoping).

Album Review: Overall, the album has a light, quiet soundscape feel to it, although there are some broken moments, beeps and brass peppered in throughout. If there is any way to *feel* like a band who typifies the Canadian landscape, they feel it. But for a group with two sets of distinct vocals and a handful of instruments, the album does not resonate with anything very memorable.

Three albums decorate the band's discography, as do three locations, including Vancouver and Montreal. They signed to Sufjan Stevens' label based on a demo sent his way & a breakfast that followed.

Unknown-ness: Don't know this band, but it totally looks like an electro pop emo band, which typically doesn't exist, as the two sides counter balance & nullify each other...but the artwork is very much like The Fever or Metric or Cut Copy, but the band pics inside tell a story of a darker, emo band. The album titles are quite long, which further promotes the emo vibe. So dark shouty songs over electronic, catchy melodies? Maybe like the Epoxies?

Album Review: This band combines Math Rock / Speed Prog tendancies, which sound a little bit like video games played on dueling guitars, with emotive vocals: sometimes shouty, sometimes melodic, sometimes pining. This is not really my thing, so although some of the music is fun, like the start of "Revenge..." the lyrics detract from the melodies, altering them musically into sweeping walls of sound rather than the playful melodies initially set. I can see goth bros swinging and fist pumping along in the pit as the music stops and starts its various driving sequences, where they feel connected to the struggle of growing up in the white community suburbs.

The Canadian band started with a slightly different line up from 1999 - 2002, they recorded, but never released anything until they reorganized in 2003. They only had 2 albums before the singer left in 2006 & was replaced by another vocalist who had his own following, but that version of the band also recorded without a full length release, and ended splitting in 2008. They have toured with many like minded bands in Canada before this record, and in the US & Japan later. They played a couple Warped Tours, which seems like the ideal audience match up.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but by the nostalgic namesake, indie design and minimal liner notes, i'm guessing this is some bedroom recorded indie pop/rock. Probably quite fey and feel-good-y (or maybe the exact opposite, dark and depressing) either way, minimal production is my guess.

Album Review: So the bedroom project of Marc Francis relies on more of a trance/rave/house vibe than straight rock, (self-explained as "dancefloor shoegaze") but there are elements of indie in his work. From Quebec, now in Brooklyn. The album has beat breaks and glitchy skips or loops, infused with banjo and other homespun folky elements. The couple songs with female vocals are intimate and light and airy with some hopscotching electronic and guitar samples filling the background. Cold Spring is a solid indie pop song that musically feels like it is a stripped down demo for a Fat Boy Slim song.

  • Tim McKeough - Guitar, Vox, Design (Herbal Scream, Fiction Dog)
  • Rachel - Artwork
  • Daryl Smith - Recording
Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. In fact, all i found of it was the record, without a cover or sleeve. So all the info i cobble together will be from the internets. From the record label that lacks the actual label's name, just comes the band name in lowercase, an illustration of a fencer, and the side determinate: prime & seconde. Not much to go on, but i gather the album is from the 1990's or 2000's

Album Review: The album is fool of melodic hardcore, sometimes driving, sometimes grooving with a math rock precision. The vocals pick and choose their battles becoming shouty or scream-o as the music gets heavier and more intense, and then relax into casual speech patterns to match musically. It is quite calculated, complex and purposeful, reminding me of the Patton./Dillinger Escape Plan recordings at times (I don't have a huge knowledge of this genre). Other than drummer Deline, the members have not previously, or gone on to do many other things, at least as recorded by the interwebs, but they did release a retrospective with all album, single, and compilation tracks records (minus their demos, apparently) back in 2000 as a double CD.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Saga, but i bet this sounds like Yes or Genesis, or any other Prog band of the 70's, even if this is dated 81/82. No doubt about it: from the fonts, to the name, to the world map on the back: definitely  conceptual prog.

Album Review: The songs are definite Prog: Meandering, energetic complex riffs that paint a picture all their own, with passionate vocals. The songs are very lively, catchy, and I feel like there is very little self-masturbatory jam sessioning here. I'm really enjoying the album more so than normal prog bands. This is their fourth - and first with American break out songs - of their 21 album catalogue. The core group of members have come, gone, and returned over the years, with a couple You Tube auditions for replacements. Every time a milestone was set, the fans pulled them right back in (including a strong following in Germany), including calling it quits in 2017 after 40 years, only to play final shows in 2018 and a reunion tour in 2020. Interestingly, they have a concept album scavenger hunt across seven records between 1978 - 2003, where some tracks- not in any particular order, are scattered and numbered as individual chapters: 16 in all. Upon completion, a live compilation of the chapters was released in 2005 to unveil a conceptual sci-fi story line about Einsteins brain, alien interest in humanity's self-destruction, and technological resurrection of the dead. Chapters 5 and 8 are here.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the packaging is odd, as you flip the record over, not from right to left to correctly view the back. From the cover art work, and the ransom letter font on the side A Front, and the multicultural + bagpipe cover on the back, i want to believe this is some interesting indie punk, but i believe it will be more college radio, jangley rock, based on the year.

Album Review: This is straight up instrumental, bagpipe heavy jazzy soundscapes. There is a little Asian influence and some middle eastern theme in the music too, so it does not always just carry a Celtic feel. On this record Marvin's March & Dee Dee... are both homages to African American culture. Most of the songs feel like jigs and ceremonial songs. The instrumentation is mostly performed on old world devices. They continued to divert to alternate directions, and after this album and the departure of two members, they headed into the direction of Jazz Fusion.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist, but he looks rather old for jumping around with a guitar in one hand, a flame in the other, all while clad in a bright yellow bam-bam one shoulder strap spandexy leotard. Kinda like a post-prime David Lee Roth. The back pics of him basically running don't help out. All that said, I can't see this being cut and dry metal or rock, but i'm going to have to guess it is hard rock trying to have an much heavier edge than it does.

Album Review: This is the fifth and final album from this band which has never featured one member named Max Webster (they were going for a Jethro Tull type name). Although popular in Canada, thanks in part to a energetic stage presence and wild antics, they never reached success elsewhere. This album features the song Battle Scar, which was recorded along side the Rush trio of Lee, Pert & Lifeson. Honestly, the album is not very good: the vocals sound rushed and the music feels like it is trying to cover too many genres, and because of that, failing to stand on it's own feet.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks and the name / album title sounds like a blue-collar Bruce Cougar Springsteen Mellencamp sorta act.

Album Review: Althogh this album is mostly southern bluesy pub rock, it definitely leans toward country, although  the song "Straight Outa Midnight" sounds a little like The Who. McLaughlin has won numerous Juno awards and is in the Canadian Country Music HoF. He has a commercial pilots license as well, and has been flying personal and commercial aircrafts for many years. And he is still performing as of 2020.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but it cover makes them look like a dark, pub band with back-alley musical style. The font, however, looks computer-generated, but that might feed into the spy theme with instructions for a secret mission. Still going to assume this is Pub Rock.

Album Review: The music is much more synthetic and new wave, similar to a cold, future concept album like Mr. Roboto, with dark, sanitized synth beats juxtaposed with an emotive singer, sometimes singing with a Devo-like monotone. "Suburban Dream" has a bit of a Police-like reggae melody to it. O K sounds a little like Roxy Music's "The Strand." The synthy part of "Cleek" reminds me of Adam Ant's talk-singing. "The Extra" is fun Power-Pop still keeping a toe in future synth sounds, but "Ha Ha Ha" sounds out of place on the album, like a Supertramp song.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but from the cover, i think it looks like a hard core band, with the blotchy semblance of some sort of military person with a gun artwork, and the stenciled band name. But the 70's AOR looking portraits of the dude-band definitely give the band a light, friendly perception. The photo interpretation outweighs the artistic usage, so i'm going with the light, 70's AOR harmony-filled power pop over the artwork, which is probably just emphasizing the band name, with nothing more to read into it.

Album Review: This is their 6th album in 6 years (since '75), but they go back to 1965, and are still active today (2020).  It is the first to be produced without Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive). This album followed a greatest hits record, which was the best selling Canadian record of all time, reaching 6x-Platinum status. They are in the top five best selling Canadian bands of all time, and have won many awards, including the Juno for band of the year in 1980. The songs are definitely in the power-arena rock genre, which makes sense. By this time, they had the biggest Canadian record of all time, so they produced music for where they'd need to play. But they also power up some oldies styled pop tunes and modernize them. "Are You Still My Baby" sounds awfully familiar...perhaps I've heard it before, as it is not a cover. And "Dump That Creep" is downright fun driving (ans humorus) New Wave track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist, assuming it is basically a singer / songwriter. The bubble-font of his name reminds me of either 10cc or Spanky & Our Gang, and Gary O' resembles Andy Partridge a little. I've seen the graphing pattern overlay design used on a bunch of softer new wave bands. The light above Gary as the frame repeats back slightly psychedelically actually makes me think that this may be religious-tinged.

Album Review: Son to a jazz musician, Gary played with many bands before he went solo with this record. He has also had popularity writing hits for other folks & bands, like 38 Special, Molly Hatchet and Eddie Money. The album is full of light, breezy & tame pop numbers with 80's dated synth production.

Unknown-ness: I don't know this band at all, but based on the artwork & color scheme, it looks like really fun  new wave music...Even the band name & album title are quite silly. I have really high hopes for the music, based on the cover.

Album Review: So this comes across as light, silly new wave. Some songs sound like Americana Roots rock, particularly the vocals. They do an interesting, new-wavey cover of the Isley Brothers' "Nobody But Me." "Who Knows How To Make Love Stay" is a really fun bit of blue-eyed soul. Operator is a good driving Farfisa organ song, with a gruff Captain Beefheart supporting vocal. "She's Lookin At Me" is a fun piece of upbeat synth pop. D&TS were much bigger in Canada than here, with multiple to 40 hits. In their early days, they held massive themed parties wherever they could to draw up a following. To keep control of their music and releases, they made their own Ritdong label for production.  Band Namesake and vocalist Doug Bennett died in 2004 from liver cirrhosis.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. From the artwork, it reminds me of Terry Gilliam's Monty Python opening, so I imagine the music will not be serious, and perhaps even comical in nature...or maybe just really drug influenced (psychedelic).

Album Review: The album is a strong mixture of folk, psych, power pop, and spaced out jamming. Lots of Beatles & Kinks inspiration. The band was from California, but moved to Quebec before recording this record. Funny thing, was the record was not meant to be the Wacker's third album, but was supposed to be a side project for the creative force. Once Elektra heard the songs, they pushed for the production as a full Wackers album (not The Incredible Duck Brothers). The recordings were also influenced by Monty Python cast members hanging out with the band while recording in the studio for two of the six weeks (MP was on their first North American tour).

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this group. Based on the collage of images on the front, and the $ for the s in their name, not to mention the year and label, I imagine this will be some creative mainstream new wave, with juvenile humor, but nothing too weird. Maybe like Bram Tchaikovsky.

Album Review: The Payolas were a Canadian rock band that began in 1978. They were failly popular, with some top 10 charting songs in Canada (including one here), but they never broke in America, partly because radio was afraid to play a band that suggested payola in their name. The main force behind the band, Bob Rock went on to produce many popular acts, and guitarist from David Bowie’s backing band, Spiders from Mars, Mick Ronson, produced and performed on this record.

“I'll Find Another (Who Can Do It Right)” was a single. It begins with a stompy, jangley guitar section, with a shouty chorus of vocals. The lead vocals have a nasally Michael Hutchence (INXS) quality to them. It is a bold, hooligan sort of song with typical radio friendly 80’s guitar focused new wave / Arena rock production.
“Where Is This Love” was a single, and lyrically contains the album’s title. It is watery, and soaring with a light, floating crystal purity. It sounds a little like the slower lightning seeds songs. The vocals are spoken with a melodic accent. The chorus yells the song title into a void, not expecting an answer.
“Wild West” was the final single. It really feels like the Alarm. Jangley guitar, echoing electric guitar, chorus-accompanied singing of “Shoot,” all create a wind-swept anthemic soundscape.
“Perhaps Some Day” has a bit of a reggae feel, and is sung like a Madness pub drinking chant. Even down to the supporting backing vocals, this could be seen as Madness appropriation.
“Never Said I Loved You” was a single, reaching #8 in Canada’s RPM 100 chart. The song’s style is of a synthetic Caribbean resort jam, also like later period Madness. It is a duet with Carol Pope, and the back and forth, taking over the main stage is a nice presentation for a bitter, smart ass song such as this, which needs both perspectives in a relationship debate. The form breaks down a little at the end, with the basic repetitive melody taking over, with muted spoken word vocals added to create a realistic effect. This would be a great variant theme song for the show You’re The Worst.

“No Prisoners” faded up very slowly, like a sunrise, with echoing percussion, and a gentle synth hum. It is a political commentary, asking for no prisoners of any ethnicity or nationality. The different groups are read off in the background like a news ticker. The song doesn’t have the punch of a U2 political song, but it fits in the same category.
“Christmas is Coming” was a single. The lead guitar makes the song feel like an 80’s sitcom theme song. There is very little element that makes the song feel like a Christmas song, which is kinda refreshing to not hear bells or familiar melodies. The vocal melody feels like a later period A’s power pop song.
“I Am a City” rings out like a siren with one solo guitar chord strummed, and a doppler shift effect on a watery bass. It takes us back to the Alarm or Duran Duran style arena rock.
“Hungry” continues the watery bass feeling, with a staggered, free flowing sentimental track, sounding a little like Robyn Hitchcock until the bold anthemic chorus. It tackles and explores another statement, like “No Prisoners” in hunger issues.
“People Who Have Great Lives” marches out like an anthemic power pop song with a very bold trumpet. The vocals are comprised by a deep chorus, and are very official and military-like. And to break it up, the music stops except wood block taps and a fast chant by the lead singer follows the same cadence, but adds diversity.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. But it looks like they are Canadian, which really does not mean anything for the style of music the album may contain. I like the angular basic shape artwork on the front, and the back looks like it might have disco elements. But from the album and band name, there might be some electronic elements.

Album Review: Apparently, this is the Canadian version of the album, as other versions around the world were retitled Living on Video, since it was the big international hit, even covered by many different bands. Pascal Languirand is the main force behind the band, controlling who is his partner, and deciding when the band is together and when it is on hiatus. The name is taken from the Kraftwerk song “Trans Europe Express.” There are two classic albums, before he retired the band, but picked it up at different times to release more albums under the name. He also recorded solo albums that are more ambient, space music in genre. I’m imagining Sparks and OMD teaming up to cover New Order songs.

“3-D Dance” was the third single released by the band. It starts with a synthesized drum beat. Swooping synth effects fly across the speakers and a fun bouncy synth hook starts wiggling into your ears. It is dotted with OMD style synth notes. The vocals start, and represent part disco, and part Sparks. The bass is driving and thumping, augmented by the nervous keyboard sounds and pulsing synth beats. There are female vocals exchanging lines in the first verse, and in the second verse, digitized, deep monster vocals exchange lines with the lead. The song is like a sped up, energetic version of Men W/O Hat’s “Safety Dance.”
“Nitelife” begins with a dark, rumbling warning synth hook, reminding me of Crash Course in Science. Then a keyboard alarming sound is added in, which reminds me of Martha & the Muffins. The effects keep changing, and get squeaker and catchier. The chorus is a call in response with the singer and himself, only a slightly deeper pitch echos the original, Devo-ish call. Synth effects zig and zag, creating a little jazzy section of the song, all the while the drums and dark bass synth keep the tempo driving. It keeps coming back to the familiar elements that are laid down in the beginning, just in continuous variation. By the end of the song, the alarming keyboard sound warbles from left to right speaker.
“21st Century” begins with a somewhat disco bass and hand clap-like percussion start. Then with a genuine OMD twinkling keyboard melody, the upbeat song takes shape. Crystalline/angelic hums fade in and out on rotation. The vocals sound quite excitable. The song follows on this Sparks (vocal melodies) plays an OMD style song. It tends to get a little tedious in its repetitive structure.

“Living on Video” was their first, biggest single, covered by many and topping the charts in the US and Europe on top of Canada. It starts off with a strong “Blue Monday” New Order bass line, with crystal synth twinkles and space warp effects. Then another OMD keyboard hook builds in to repeat, and the final hook is added, a synthetic slide whistle is the best way to describe it. The vocals are all quite calculated, and some are digitized and some have an alluring unisex tone. Once the song breaks, the New Order bass line comes into full swing, and it is wonderful. More space and digital effects are layered over, along with vocal (some like Ladytron) cruising by. The song tears itself down, and builds itself back up numerous times, and keeps coming back to the incredibly catchy elements.
“Message on the Radio” was also a single, and the album title for most of the world. Different styles of digital hooks are used here, again, bringing OMD to mind, mostly. The vocals again remind me of Sparks. The song is built on a standard template of lyric-instrumental stanza on repeat until it reaches the chorus. The chorus is a burst of excitable vocal energy. Halfway through the song, an instrumental breakdown begins, with some sections experiencing a controlled breakdown, but it always comes back to the main supportive hooks. The song fades out with the energetic chorus in a fade.
“Josee” starts with a bass and drum beat, and breathy, futuristic automated female vocal samples. The song kicks in with another playful and upbeat OMD style synth line. The lyrics have a big emotional exertion, again, similar to Sparks. Once you make a connection, it is hard to shake it. The song sonds like a reprise on a couple of songs that came before it. The breathy vocals play a much bigger role here, for an instrumental breakdown, they speak over in a French(?) accent, like they are speaking over a phone call. There is a bit of an industrial effect breakdown, and some soaring electric guitar notes, and the male Oh-whoa-oh-oh vocals perform a call and response with the female vocals. The song returns to its previous structure, and plays out with the bouncy synth effects carrying it through to the fade out
“Digital World” has an anxious looping keyboard hook, accompanied with a drum machine tempo that is steady feels like it is about to pick up. Drive-by zooming synth effects lift off, and the song takes a leisurely futuristic drive, with a few vocal samples that cruise by, lost in the song’s momentum. This instrumental song continues with the nervous, driving synth tones, allowing the listener to visualize passing through art deco-futuristic city-scapes. It feels like I should be playing a game like Stun Runner.
