Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. This album is quite perplexing. It screams everything i'd like in an indie, hipster band...provocative album title, two girls & one guy band make up, cool kitschy indie cover and back photo, almost like a goofy & colorful Belle & Sebastian spread. But this is a live recording, so with out knowing their catalogue, does this capture tracks from previous albums, or is this one of their first releases, and it just works better live...also, only Ratshin plays guitar, so is the album just guitar and vocals? No bass, drums, or key/synth? My preconceived notion about the album is that I'll like it a lot as just enough mix of juvenile humor and fun indie pop melodies.

Album Review: One guitar and two or three angelic voices comprises the music for UB, but throw in high-brow toilet humor and witty envelope pushing topics, you have a folk band that could also be considered anti-folk with its lack of naivety. The lofty music and complex harmonies give the surface appearance of a simple jovial folk act. While it is interesting and captivating at first, this is not the sort of album that holds my interest and I would not come back to for multiple listens.

They had two basic periods of activity, 1981 - 1988, and then 1998 - present, where they have still been playing out over the past couple years with one personnel change: Kristen is no longer part of the band since 2007. This is the second of three albums from the first period: two of which were live recordings. The trio was formed in Seattle, but all went to Bennington College in VT.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist. And i'm not sure what to make of the prediction. From the name Loz and the dude on the motorcycle i presume is Netto, i first thought this may have a Hispanic / Latin influence. The year makes it hard to deduce what will be on it...86 was a year without one popular guessable style.

Album Review: The album sounds like there is not one real instrument on it, which was popular at the time. So it is pretty smooth in production, and the vocal style is smooth as well and relaxed, and a little Bowie + Michael Hutchence-like. Fat City shares a very similar intro as Prince's 1999.

Loz was a nickname acquired back in elementary school growing up in the UK by Netto. He grew up in a variety of bands but first made it big in Sniff N' the Tears until a motorcycle accident put him in a cast and caused his departure. This only led to a recovery time full of songwriting, which in turn, catapulted his solo career. He's produced and created his own studio and recorded with many artists which all links back to his past connections. Still making music today, he never gained notable popularity, especially not in the US.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I got this because i liked the homemade nature of the cover. I didn't realize when i bought it that this was only a one song single with a remix on the back, but I was interested to see what this record, with the industrial sounding name and song title, would be like.

Album Review: Barely an album review, as it is just one song, but there is a lot of depth to the song. It is part kitchen sink-industrial  with a cold wave dance beat that comes off a punk, but more approachable, perhaps because the chorus is a soulful & sexy woman singing the title (think En Vogue). Maybe a little playfulness too like B-52's minus the surf aspect as well.

There is not much out there about this record/band, except for the information surrounding William Tucker. After this release, Ministry's Al Hourgensen picked him up to play on tour. He's from Jersey, so he has ties with Ween where he was in a band with their early producer/bass/keyboard player Andrew Weiss, and he gave guitar lessons to Deaner, AKA Mickey Melchiondo. He unfortunately took his own life in 1999.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks quite interesting...i mean the album name is quite juvinile, as are the photos of stuffed animals with instruments. However, the two members are two older, middle aged men. There is a quote of praise from Parents Magazine (and Newsweek), so maybe this is designed for little kids.

Album Review: Wow. I don't think i've ever heard anything more embarrassing. Not really sure who this is for, or who would actually think about buying this for themselves or their kids. It is just awful style representations of rock, "rap (which sounds closer to Devo)" pop, vaudevillian country, with lyrics that try to relate to young children or present motivational anecdotes. One can only hope there were all only good intentions with this duo, as they do have a 9+ album discography (and i've only seen positive reviews and praise, so that's great to discover). Still,  I hope this was no child's first experience with music. One of their songs was picked up and played on Captain Kangaroo in the mid 70's, and from there, they transitioned from an adult act to a kids act, moving from NYC to VT. When their popularity waned in 1993, they split ways and performed solo-ly independently, only reuniting once as a benefit for an ailing Rosen in 2005. He passed away in 2007 from ALS. Shontz focused more on environmental education in music, and made his solo career almost completely void of Rosen. As they invited kids to their shows to bring their favorite teddy bears in the audience, it should be no surprise that their big hit was Teddy Bears' Picnic, which even became an emmy nominated video.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover is a painting, which could mean really anything, but it errs to the side of educated, and the back photo looks like the Men they Couldn't Hang or Dexy's Midnight Runners...hoping for the Dexys style, rather than the bland soundscape

Album Review: Holy cow are most of these songs terrible! "Big Fat Blonde" and "Government Cheese" are incredibly embarrassing. The style is almost a Celtic jangle pop meets light cow punk with, to me, a very off-putting quivering main vocal that reminds me of the little i know of Barenaked Ladies. The vocal acrobatics are so cringworthy, they make Weird Al at his worst sound like Sinatra. The only restrained and listenable song is Long Gone Long...its actually a quite catchy song (the final track, Information is not bad, but the lyrics just feel rushed and specifically unrelatable, and it is about 2 min too long). Lots of themes of drinking and being suppressed permeate the album. Somehow, they were more popular in Europe, specifically Norway than the US. After breaking up the band after three albums and a hiatus, they reformed under pressure from their Norwegian popularity, and recorded a new album that went gold there in 1994. They are still together and active (2019) Their last album was in 2015. Stephen King liked them so much that he's included their lyrics in two of his books.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. Not much to go by with the bold, colorless font & cover artwork. There is a wah wah painting on the back that looks like a childish commentary on excess noise in NYC. So is this album an addition to the amount of noise, or an ironic critique on too much noise. And with a year on A&M of 1986, will this be college radio jangley rock with a snarky, humorous tone?

Album Review: This is the duo Campsie & McFarlane's fourth and final album. While this The Cure bassist produced album is hair rock with pop-synth production, most of their other material before and after this album is lighter, funkier, and dancier, as they were kind of a full-on synth wave pop duo in the beginning. But this album shows very little of that genre, and feels like a shot at the US radio market, even if it is about 6 years past prime for this style. The vocals are raspy between Steve Perry & Def Leppard, and the production is dense guitars and dated, time-period appropriate crystalline synth that feels completely digitized. Lead off song sounds like it should be on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack. Single "We Can Learn From This" is a smooth R&B

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the dark cover, and abstract skull collage artwork + year, i'm going to guess they are dark, brooding new wave, not too different than The The.

Album Review: So yeah, the album is dark and brooding, vocals a little like the modern band Ceremony's non-hardcore songs, which grow from calculated, deep chants to angry and aggressive emo. There is also an element of Cowpunk to the songs composition, too. This was a follow-up record (2 of 3) to their much more praised debut, which featured a hit with "88 Lines About 44 Girls." Before that, they were known as the ravers, and had a very yet-to-be famous roadie in Eric Boucher, AKA Jello Biafra.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, and i'll be honest: the year 1986 made me quite hesitant to buy this, as much of this has the production styling of dead drums and one-dimensional synth smoothness. But i do like a good female fronted band, so i wanted to give this band a try. I'm still expecting adult contemporary pop with the bad late 80's production sound.

Album Review: And the sound is spot on...i still can't imagine what people were thinking when these studio albums came back and sounded like they were created entirely digitally without a soul. The band started in 1981, and enjoyed success with many singles, their biggest was Heaven (top 5 hit). Grace Knight and Bernie Lynch (he asked her, his then girlfriend, eventually short-lived wife, to be in his band Living Single as it was before a words-out-of-a-hat name change, (there was another Living Single)) still perform together as the Eurogliders as of 2018.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But from the name and the untracked VHS looking artwork + year, I imagine this will be some dark, cold new wave with lots of synth and goth themes.

Album Review: It was not that- definitely not synth, new wave or goth. This is a jangly college radio version of country rock, with heavy lean on the country element. Although i would not associate the sound as punk at all, they came from the Cowpunk movement, apparently more raw on their first album. The songs are definitely more driving and foot stompin' than typical country. The band name is taken from a Tex Ritter song of the same name that was played by Big Al; one of the animatronic bears at Disneyland's Country Bear Jamboree. Annette was in the band the Bangs, which became the Bangles, but left them to join this band right before the Bangles first record came out (but after an EP). Her vocals are strong on the whole album, especially on their cover of traditional folk song In the Pines, which sounds an awful lot like House of the Rising Sun. "Johnnie's At the Fair" sounds like a traditional native american song.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but i assume, for '86, and a generally dark cover & bandname, that this will be some sophisticated, cerebral-ly dark art rock, perhaps a little jangly.

Album Review: Glenn Morrow is one of the founders of the record Label Bar-None, famous for TMBG's original label. This is the first record put out by Bar None, and I came across a radio performance of Rage to Live supporting TMBG in a radio performance of "Why Does the Sun Shine"(link below). Pat Irwin of Raybeats & B-52's fame plays a guitar solo on the song Rain. The record is a mix of twangy college radio atmospheric rock, and tracks that take a bunch of listens to really get into and understand. Enough is Enough is pretty straightforward rock from the time, reminding me of Paul Westerberg

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist, and I keep wanting to call him Mic Howlin' but the L & W are transposed. I like the VHS-quality scanline cover art, and simple artwork & angular font. Not sure what to expect with this one, as it could be really anything from a singer songwriter to future rock. I do anticipate some sort of synth element.

Album Review: Well, this is all synth element. 100% synth done on at least 5 different synthesizers, creating strange and elegant new-agey B-movie background themes. Apparently, the Mic in her name refers to the method she writes music that is visible: "synesthesia'

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them. But if you can dig through all the info and imagry on the record, you get the sense that they are going for the futuristic sound of Times Square in the year 2000 (it being 1986). I imagine something like music from a Blade Runner or Total Recall type universe. So what that might include is anyone's guess...I'm banking on futuristic-industrial music with electronic effects and advertisements sampled and layered throughout their songs.

Album Review: As expected, it is a chaotic, over-stimulation of the ears, with lots of little catchy bits layered over top of each other, and advertisement samples separating some of the tracks and layered in the songs. The vocals are of a snotty new wave variety. And at the base of all their songs are good melodies and dance-able rhythms. I imagine this is what folks though the future of rock would be in the Dystopian futures as shown by the films listed above. The lead track was featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off/ Their look, somewhat of a futuristic, enhanced Billy Idol makes sense since Tommy James was in Generation X. And some of the ad that bookend the tracks were, in fact, actually purchased by companies...L'Oreal & i-D Magazine specifically, and the Discogs link lists the ads split out from the tracks.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them. From the non-PC name, 19 track listing, and Rat on a Stick record label, I'd have to take a guess these are some speed-punk songs. Fast, loud, abrasive, and not caring about anything.

Album Review: The bulk of the songs are short, but they don't feel like it. They are small grungy, slacker songs, with some feedback, but clear vocals, and not fast-punk...closer to a Guided By Voices nonchalant style. There are some fun bass lines, and heavy guitars, but over all the vocals, delivery, and melodies have an almost beatnik style. Not much is out there on the vast internet about them.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of these guys, but I'm guessing they were a borderline band between hip-hop/rap, and smoother New Edition style R&B. Not typically my genre, but I'm always game to check out solid 80's rap acts.

Album Review: These guys never had a big following, or went on to become famous names. K.D. tried to go out on his own at one point after 2 records as a solo artist to equal obscurity.

“Rest In Peace” starts with an off tempo kick drum and an electric guitar that almost sounds like industrial. The notes are samples, and there are a lot of synth “surprise emphasis” effects. The second verse through changes a little with scratching. It feels a little dated, but still bright and fresh, with Run DMC style rhyming and a solid rhythm that constantly moves forward.
“Damn Thing” Also starts with a rock-influenced sampling tempo, and a story-rap verse. The chorus is fun, ripping on some guy who never does a damn thing, with a secondary vocal calling out “What?” in a school yard call and response melody. Retroactively, this reminds me of Young MC. It ends a little flat.
“(Nothing Serious) Just Buggin'” was a solid single, reaching #17 & 18 on the US R&B & Dance charts, and #7 in the UK. My dollar bin purchase of the record came with the Just Buggin single with alt versions shoved in the jacket. The song introduces their name, and is a playful skipping tempo, and lots of samples and effects from the era. The chorus is the word Bug stretched and manipulated through a vocal emulator, reminds me a little of They Might Be Giants samples. Later on, the samples sound like they were used in the scratch collage of “Pump Up the Volume”
“Chance for Our Love” gets a little sentimental, with a slower, swaying beat, and high pitch synth. The vocals are harmonized and light. Apparently, this was a sign of what was to come for the group. The uttering of the word Girl is a little like the awards show skit from Mr. Show.

“Please Love Me” was a second single that charted at 91 in the UK, but did not chart in the US. This song begins more in line with many of the dance/radio hits from the mid 80’s. A comfortable beat, a cowbell and whistle, a hilly melody and some hand clap drum kit percussion. It is not bombastic or overly excitable, just a mid-range sweaty groove. It even dips into a little new wave territory with an synth organ.
“Just For Fun” was their third single, peaking at #61 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart. It gets back to hip hop, with a spoken intro and synchronized verse punctuation with emphasized one word rhymes. The MC’s take turns on the mic, introducing themselves, in an all but lost art today.
“We're Called Whistle” starts with some scratching, and sets the tone with a funky tempo and some sound effects (that Pump Up The Volumne effect). The lyrics are scratched and sampled vocals pieced together with other effects. No real vocals, this is an instrumental of sorts, considering the sampled vocals are not live.
“Barbara's Bedroom” was the final single, hitting #31 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart. It starts with come vocoder altered “I’s” setting up the melody. The vocals are straight forward Rn'B, and tell a sorta braggart story of being in “Barbara’s bedroom” The instrumentation is minimal, a little new wave synth at the early middle, and a synth drum beat. Layered, harmonized vocals make up the chorus,

Unknown-ness: With a general-sounding name, and a lack of in-depth knowledge of mid-80's rap, I can't say I know this. I imagine it is similar to Run DMC or Rob Base, as the style, angular artwork, and overall appearance lend it toward those hip-hop artists.

Album Review: Steady-B, aka Warren McGlone was caught and sentenced to life in prison without parole for a botched bank robbery and the murder of police officer Lauretha Vaird (first female phila police officer killed on duty) along with fellow rapper Cool C. This event sadly now overshadows the prestige and hype Steady B brought to West Philly back in the mid 80’s. He went to school and grew up on the same scene as Will Smith, following on the heels of Schoolly D, MC Breeze and Lady B.

“Bring the Beat Back” was a single. Steady electronic drum beat and scratching start off the minimal track. The chorus is a combo of samples and scratches. The song pauses about 1:45 and a drawn out “wellllll” kicks the track back in. There are a handful of breaks where it seems the song could end. The style is aggressive but not angry.
“Get Physical” was a single. The production feels raw, and live, with an auditorium echo around the vocals. The lyrics involve the stauts of the MC rapping and trying to get girls.  It is still a minimal drum beat with some samples peppered in throughout.
“Surprise” has a denser drum machine kicking off the track. The rap style is much more story-song like “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” and the vocal tone sounds more adolescent, too.
“Cheatin' Girl” begins with more radio friendly effects bips and bops surrounding a jazzy drum kit and vibrating bass. This too follows the basic story-song rap format, but a little more aggressive, closer to Beastie Boys and Run DMC. The chorus is a skipping, scratched version of the song title.

“Stupid Fresh” was a single. A bass and clap drum beat kicks the song off, and the aggressive rapping begins, reminding me a little of Chris Rock’s voice. The scratching and FX include some dated sounds like those from electro-scratches from Axel F and a couple sax notes.
“Hit Me” has some synth wood block notes buried below the cymbal drum machine and other rotating percussion effects, along with some synth bursts. It is still a fairly minimal instrument song, showcasing the vocals. The chorus has female vocals sampled.
“Nothin' But the Bass” has a pounding bass, then cuts with an electronic drum hit added. The word “Nothin’” is studdered, and the song feels like it is a motivational song to get people out moving. It features cowbell, scratching, sampled bursts, and is an all-around solid track.
“Yo Mutha” features a drum beat that is almost industrial, and falls into the story-song rap. There is a deep sinister bass line in the song creating an ominous feeling. The song is comical and an insult track, putting down, of course, yo mutha. The title is scratched and skipped to create the chorus.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band, but based on the years and artwork, it seems like it will be some sort of honkytonk midwest new wave.

Album Review: Rubber Rodeo basically all went to school together at the Rhode Island School of Design, and even featured the married songwriting team of Holmes & Milliken. They started out on fire, even getting a Grammy nomination for Long Form Video in 84, for Scenic Views. Their second album was not received well, and although they were dropped from their label, they kept going for a few years more. Once the band ended in the late 80’s, the married couple ended their union shortly after.

“Need You Need Me” starts with a few chants, and follows up with some road weary, echoing cowboy guitar. The vocals are shared by both husband & wife, and there a western movie set imagery is created by the song. The chorus of back and forth repetition of the song title between the couple is pretty catchy, especially how it comes in after the lone-range guitar. It does draw out and last a little longer than it needs to.
“Slow Me Down” possesses more of arena rock soundscape architecture with long and drawn out chords. There is a bit of an urgency in the verse, which is medicated by the chorus, which does in fact, slow down
“Anywhere With You” was a moderate hit. It is a peppy new wave song with lots of hooks and jangly guitars. It builds well, making you anticipate an emotional release in the chorus with a solid build. This is fully sung by Trish. There is a backing female chorus supporting the lead vocals. The chorus plays out to a fade, and although it too is a little too long, it is a solid hit and example of the era.
“Walking After Midnight” is a Patsy Cline cover. It offers a few sound effects hinting at a haunting, slow tempo. The country twang guitar kicks the song into a reliable structure. The female vocals are deep, and strained a bit. The whole atmosphere the song creates feels sparse.
“City of God” continues with the loud, power chords that swell with arena rock. The male vocals here feel like they are fluttering with emotion. So yeah, it feels like a quite preachy song of religious, evangelical enlightenment of not being able to go back to his former life, having found the city of god. I’ll be happy to never hear this song again.

“The Hardest Thing” was the first unsuccessful single. It has some echo-y bass and keyboards working a call and response in the beginning. Female vocals, generally deep in tone follow the melody unremarkably. The harmonized chorus places the listener into open-tundra soundscapes, like much of the era’s musical tone.
“House of Pain” is a mid tempo religious song with male vocals. The guitars wail in the background, empathizing with the vocals, blaming his point of focus on creating his house of pain. The lyrics are pretty stupid, and could be viewed to be typical country music topics. There is a whole section of him complaining about bringing home bacon for his lady to cook, but he goes on to explain how he likes his breakfast. Seems very misogynistic, and places all of the emotional blame of his painful relationship on the woman…but he’d do it all over again.
“Mess o' Me” is a paceless new wave song, that never quite captures a tempo, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The female vocals are like a witchy-Blondie. But about 1:45 in, the song finds a catchy cohesive chorus. There are a bunch of new wave elements that must have come with all of the 80’s synthesizers: twinkles, crystalline charms, zooming waves. Separated out, the chorus is very good, rising and falling and still pushing forward.
“Before I Go Away” slowly fades up with female vocals, with a theatrical presentation, echoing, repetitive waves of soothing. Once it gets to about 2 minutes, it transitions into an orchestral, Annie Lennox or Enya style song for a short burst. It kinda feels like all of the songs in Ween’s catalogue I never hope they play live. The chorus hits again 2 minutes later, with some classical chanting and feel.

“Heartbreak Highway” starts the album off with a couple haunting & western elements that then combined into a driving song. The female vocals sound more confident than the first album, and a little B-52’s-ish. The chorus has a nice melody rollercoaster. And toward the end there is even be a sax, and definitely some slide guitar action. It is a solid song.
“If You're Ever Alone” an over-processed drum roll begins this country ballad with some pep, sounding a little like a sit com theme song. The vocals feel a little like the Pretenders, but in an AOR, AM light rock way.
“Everybody's Talkin'” slowly fades up, with the famous melody from Midnight Cowboy. It is a cover of the Fred Neil (covered by Nilsson for the film) song, and features some synthesized effects on the slide guitar, but is otherwise pretty mellow, with a slight anxious metronome-like beat.
“Souvenir” continues the male vocals, with a slide guitar, toe-tapping bass line, and toy-piano sounding accents. The female vocals come in for s second verse, and they harmonize in the chorus. The song is not bad, but it feels a little empty, and is lacking one more hook or something to make it stand out & be catchy.
“The Civil War” starts off with harmonica and typical campfire cowboy on the prairie ballad. Banjo and strings are added to the slowly growing song. It carries with it a sad reflectiveness that turns patriotic around the midway point. The established melody is transcribed with a bunch of different instruments and instrument effects, from electric guitar to keys to sax, getting bolder and more empowered with each incident

“Deadtown” is also a shared vocal song, with many 80’s new wave synth elements, and a kinda of jittery, guitar based melody. The song also feels theatrical, particularly in the dense, icy chorus.
“When Worlds Collide” has a pulsing, anxious beat, and echoy instruments over the shared vocals. The verse feels like it is going to build into an explosive chorus, but instead, it scales down, and the chorus is a subdued, harmonized hookless melody.
“Look Who's Back” echoing tubular bells start the song, with female/Pretenders like vocals. The melody is kind of dreamy, incorporating soaring slide guitar in the forefront and bouncy synth underneath. Stripped down, this could probably be the catchiest song on the album, but unfortunately, for my taste, the slide guitar battles the speed and design of the rest of the song, and it comes out winning, detracting from the song as a whole.
“Maybe Next Year” slows the album down for a country ballad, with straight up country male vocals. Slide guitar is the main enforcer of this song too. It is a little sad, but hopeful at the same time. The female vocals do accompany the song, but really only fall to the background.
