Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band...looks like they will be an Americana Indie Band, reminding me of The Golden Republic in design. It doesn't come across like an album i'd pick up, so not sure where i got it, either by friend or by radio station discard bin.

Album Review: The second EP from a band who stuck around for about 6 years playing a jangly, pop country tinged brand of laid back rock. With roots in Alabama, many of this album's themes revolve around lives lived in the south. Some of the songs are jaunty, some are sleepy, but all sound like an effort to match The Shins or Soul Asylum's "New World" from Grave Dancers Union.

They began as King Lear Jet, who apparently sold songs to shows like Felicity and Dawson's Creek, and rebranded themselves in the late 90's.

Unknown-ness: never heard of this band, but I liked the name, and i was familiar with the label, so i figured i was getting into some facet of punk...whether that is Riot Grrl, crust or folksy punk, i am not sure. But i am going to guess it leans more melodically than angry noise.

Album Review: There is definitely an angsty edge to the vocals, but the production has a folky feel to it. Like 4 Non Blondes playing L7. There is jangly production that is hard torn between the college radio style popular at the time, and trying to maintain a rougher edge. Curl Up & Dye drives with punk drumming at the start, but it mellows out into a trippy alt rock song.

The band was formed in 1985 as "an excuse to drink beer," released seven albums and toured primarily on the West Coast. They lasted until 1992, and most  members have continued ties to the music industry through magazines, art, and record store ownership.

Unknown-ness: Not sure why i picked up this CD from the discount bin back in the late 90s...don't specifically remember the name or any of the songs. But it looks like something i'd be into... it has a poppy rock, DIY feel to it, including the band photo. So i'm going to guess it's along the lines of The Rentals or Fountains of Wayne.

Album Review: The music is on the lighter, jangly pop side, like the Posies, but it is catchy with clean hooks. Most of the songs bound forth with a happy bouncy demeanor, with a tinge of slacker delivery. "Rescue Us From Boredom" has a little of a Dismemberment Plan feel to its driving progression. "Stone Alone" has some slide guitar, giving it a little of an alt-country rock sound. "One Day" has a twee, jangly power pop sound, with a little psych.

This record was nominated for Juno's Alt record of the year up in Canada in 96, and was released on Sloan's murderecords label. The album was apparently re-released in the US as "Sticktoitiveness," so i'm guessing this is the original Canadian version. They did not remain a band for very long, only recording from 1994 - 1997, releasing a couple other EPs and a follow-up full length in that time. The band reformed a bunch of times in 2002, 2006, 2009, 2012, and made a third record in 2003.

Unknown-ness: I had never heard of this band. I found 2 of their records in a dollar box, but decided on this one after simply reading it was a better / more popular record...but did not hear it at all. With a 1985 date, I assume this is smoothly produced pop with a bunch of synth effects in place of typical instruments.

Album Review: It is one part jangly pop, but also has a bit of a blue-collar pub rock edge, if only a small bit, underneath the mid-80's overproduction sheen. They possess standard nasally British vocals, and some Blue-Eyed, Mod-revival pop experimentation on a couple of the tracks with synthesized horns.

This is their first album, three years after Greaves and Lister formed the band and a handful of non-album singles. Two more albums followed, with the middle one being the big hit in the US (Weapons of Love), with some songs being featured in the 1987 sci-fi film The Hidden. They were on track to follow in the Jam's footsteps, but ended up coming off without their power and drive, and ended up succumbing to the era's Miami Vice soundtrack bands in the states, and never recovered back home. You can hear it quite clearly on the track "Is There a Solution," which is musically great until the Phil Collins like vocals and chorus hit.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. While the date is 1982, the cover looks like a millennial angular pop-punk offering. The bleak two tone color scheme give them a darkness to the music, potentially. But i really don't know what's going to be on here...based on their pics, they look like a new wave band, so let's go with that.

Album Review: This record is really great. Two vocal styles from two vocalists round out the good with a Jonathan Richmond style voice, and a Peter Weller style vocal, with music to complement both styles. The songs can be a little jangly like the Alarm, but a good recent comparison would be to the UK band, the Rifles. It feels like the third or fourth catalogue offering of a previously raucous punk band who has aged well and lost a bit of their driving, angsty edge, yet this is their debut.

This record received substantial airplay for college and underground radio stations via the record label's connection to CBS/Columbia, particularly their anthem "Everywhere That I'm Not." They release 4 albums in the 80's then quit, and reformed 26 years later to release another album, two best-ofs and a handful of new singles. One of their biggest inspirations was the Beatles, and they sounded so much like them, that many Beatles fan thought their 1983 cover of "Cry for a Shadow" was a new recording by the living members in time for the Beatles Anthology release in 1995.

Unknown-ness: I got this cassette back in High School at some point, but i don't remember why or what they sound like. Probably heard a song of theirs on Post Modern PST or 103.9 WDRE, and saw their cassette in a cheap bin, alas, i don't know what's on it. From the muddled guitar smashing image, wacky "Shadowy Men" sorta font, i'm going to guess this is meandering jangle pop.

Album Review: So as soon as I saw the name of the second track, and it started playing I at least remember the song 3 Strange Days very well. It did, in fact, make its way onto a mix tape when i was in high school. The rest of the album falls in line with what was popular for early 90's college radio pop. Half classic rock, half power pop, with a little psychedelic, drawn out musical support, and a lot of loopy, meandering melodies that come off as more slacker rock than pure, clean pop. Singer Clayton-Felt was diagnosed with Cancer and passed away in 2000. King of the Dollar breaks down into the lyric and guitar riff of "I Can't Get No Satisfaction."

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the cover is a painting, which could mean really anything, but it errs to the side of educated, and the back photo looks like the Men they Couldn't Hang or Dexy's Midnight Runners...hoping for the Dexys style, rather than the bland soundscape

Album Review: Holy cow are most of these songs terrible! "Big Fat Blonde" and "Government Cheese" are incredibly embarrassing. The style is almost a Celtic jangle pop meets light cow punk with, to me, a very off-putting quivering main vocal that reminds me of the little i know of Barenaked Ladies. The vocal acrobatics are so cringworthy, they make Weird Al at his worst sound like Sinatra. The only restrained and listenable song is Long Gone Long...its actually a quite catchy song (the final track, Information is not bad, but the lyrics just feel rushed and specifically unrelatable, and it is about 2 min too long). Lots of themes of drinking and being suppressed permeate the album. Somehow, they were more popular in Europe, specifically Norway than the US. After breaking up the band after three albums and a hiatus, they reformed under pressure from their Norwegian popularity, and recorded a new album that went gold there in 1994. They are still together and active (2019) Their last album was in 2015. Stephen King liked them so much that he's included their lyrics in two of his books.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of them. But with the wood cut-like print cover art, i'm getting a sense of Cowpunk or roots music. Los Lobos comes to mind. The album is produced by Mitch Easter, and it is on the Boston indie label Throbbing Lobster, so it might be jangley. The Picasso copied band portrait is a nice touch on the back.

Album Review: Jangle pop is the name of the game on this record...the meandering bass and lofty vocal melodies make a perfect fit for the strummey guitar style. These Alabama gents fell right into the Southern Jangle-Pop scene, a few miles inland from Atlanta, but still roped into the same fitting sub-genre as REM, if only a little more straight ahead rocking. They have a fourth member, but she is a non-performing lyricist, whom would build songs out of bits and ideas Roden brought to her. Their name is short for Primitive Tones, they only produced two (barely) full lengths, and an ep between 1984-1990.

Unknown-ness: I have heard of Microdisney from being a casual fan of the High Llamas & Sean OHagan, but did not know what they sounded like. I only assumed it was similar to the light indie rock with a bit of a grounded, alt-country feel.

Album Review: At first most of the album is sleepy, with smooth & tinny, "fake" mid to late 80's production, and bits of country peppered through out. That is, except for the superior, fun, soulful "Big Sleeping House"; a song i'd love to hear XTC or the Jam cover. But as i listened to it more, the vocals became more enjoyable in a bit of an Andy Partridge way at the same mid-late 80's era. In 2018, after winning the Irish Music Rights Org / NCH Trtailblazing award, they played their self-declared final two shows ever after a 30 year hiatus.

Members & Other Bands:

  • David Gamble - Drums, Vox (Tone Tones, Boat Of, Beauty Contest, Jack Heard, Peach of Immortality)
Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. By the look of the artwork and font, it looks very low budget. Perhaps the abstract art will lead to jazzy tunes. Or perhaps it's experimental. But it looks very independent, and not much info on the band itself anywhere on the packaging.

Album Review: So the songs have a very Talking Heads / Pixies / Lou Reed quality to them, with Violent Femmes instrumentation. The lead track in particular is odd in the fact that it sounds like a Gang of Four song played by a jangley band like REM. The urgency is there, but the playfulness in the vocals, similar to Adam Ant at times, makes it very non threatening, and still quite good. This collection of 5 tracks can all be found on 2010's full length compilation titled This Is Still It. The band is comprised of just the two, but later after Gamble left, the remainder filled out the line up with sax and full time guitar as they were winding down as a band. Vic Varney also managed fellow Athens alums Pylon, and you can hear similarities in what they were both up to.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of lifeboat, and there is not much to go on by the dark artwork with yellow lettering. The front is Noah's Ark (thus, lifeboat), and the back is a band photo, barely visable. The album reminds me a little of Die Kreuzen, and it's emptiness could mean that is is harder than most Jangle pop that was coming out of Boston (mgmt) or Chapel Hill (label). I'm still going to lean toward Jangle pop for my guess.

Album Review: There are hints of Talking Heads, Pixies, and REM on this mini-LP. It is college radio jangly, but it is clean in production, and doesn't rely on tedious repetitive hooks that define the bottom rungs of college radio popularity. Then there are definite British new wave characteristics, with snotty nasally vocals surrounded by synths, reminding me of Thomas Dolby or Flock of Seagulls (on "Ruling Class Kids"). "Twelve Hour Drive" features chants and angular music similar to Gang Of Four, until the Farfisa keys come in, making it a less abrasive track. Apparently brothers Bob & Greg have had success in scoring films as well. Gary Smith owns Fort Apache Studios.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. Could be jangly just by the name and the year, however one of the band members has a Misfits shirt on, so that could make for more of a punk-like edge, also they look kinda crusty, so that may make for interesting music.

Album Review: Part of the "New Sincerity" musical movement (ragged clothes & melodic songs played heavily), but also embracing the sloppy Drunk Rock moniker (Show up Drunk, Show Up Late, Or Don't Show Up At All), this band was pulled in multiple genre directions from the speed of punk melodies and harmonies of power pop, and jangley guitars, kinda sounding like a raw Gin Blossoms. But at the base of it all, they were musicians making good songs. Theyt didn't do well with "next big thing" pressure and really just want to have fun. This is their second album, and they've said it is mostly left over material that didn't get recorded for the first.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But they sure seem wacky and alternative. I bet this is mainly jangly college rock with a tinge of punk attitude...but just s little.

Album Review: Apparently they were 10 years old by the time this record came out. In 1979, they won a battle of the bands over Mission of Burma. Their momentum was stopped when they broke up from 80-81, and never regained as big of a following. They even had a song on Guitar Hero 2, and are still active today (2020). The record starts out with power pop, quietly heads toward jangley college radio rock, and dives into some heavier hooks and speedy metal guitars.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But found both records together in a dollar section in a record shop in LA. Couldn't just buy one: what if it was good and i regretted getting both, or what if the OTHER ONE was better. There was no time to consult the interwebs. It was vacation. The albums look like the work of 2 different bands. the older, Sunbathing album has a Jokey Americana look to the cover, and a very wacky / spunky new wave look on the back. The '81 record, with the black and white, just got done painting, JC Penny's photo shoot, looks colder, much more serious, and like it will perhaps be jangle pop or euro-new wave.

Album Review: These two records comprise the whole of the Sinceros Catalogue. Pet Rock was recorded to be called 2nd Debut, but that was shelved & re-recorder / rearranged to form Pet Rock by Gus Dudgeon famous for producing much of Elton John's work since 1970. The first album has some soft edges to the new wave, and lots of smooth harmonies like ELO and even the Bee-Gees at times. The punkier songs Little White Lie and I Still Miss You are solid new wave songs.

Pet Rock starts off more methodically and jangly, such was the direction music was moving at the time. The whole album has a more mature sound, not necessarily better...it sounds a lot of the boring music being produced in the mid 80's, and for that, I guess it is ahead of its time slightly. "Girl I Realize" is a short but fun Motown inspired pop track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of the Shirts. Like the simple still life with assumed action cover art, and the sizable 6-person band on the back looks like Dexy's Midnight Runners, so I'm guessing this might be a folky, jazzy pop sort of record.

Album Review: The album has a folky, late 60's Woodstock vibe to it mixed in with a little theatrical / musical elements. It feels kinda bland like a lot of introspective jangley college rock records, save the songs Teenage Crutch and Lonely Android, which have a faster, vibrant feel that i could see being played at CBGBs: the club they got their big start opening for acts like Television and Talking Heads. Nowadays, the (ex) member most recognizable is singer Annie Golden, who recently appeared as the silent inmate on Orange is the New Black. She has been a more prolific actor through out her career, also appearing in Hair, Cheers, and 12 Monkeys as well.

Unknown-ness: I had never heard of this band…looks like it may be calculated, yet fun. Retro, random artwork of children juxtaposed against the band name and album title, seems to illustrate a contradictory, yet clever, say hipsterry theme. I imagine new wave since it is from 1980, but to what degree, and how much nervousness, is yet to be found.

Album Review: So the guitarist, Rich Gilbert, has gone on to play with some of the most popular and big artists from the Boston area, namely Tanya Donelly and Frank Black. He has also worked on many a Bob Mould-Sugar album. They are still playing one-off reunion shows, even up to this year, 2017. But they never received much nationwide success, despite being played on KROQ in LA.
“Guardian Angel” kicks in with a drum beat, and enters jangley pop territory. The vocals are jittery, and nervous, much like Tom Verlaine, with backing harmonized vocals for key phrases in the verse. There is some good energy to the song, but it is pretty non-threatening, and like a sloppier early-mid era Talking Heads
“Dick & Jane” is a little darker, with a fuzzy feedback guitar punctuating the verse, which is delivered in a cold and broken in structure. Verse two takes the guitar up a couple of octaves, but still is screeching with feedback. The chorus is just a chant of the chorus. The song is a little tedious, as it does not expand over the segmented and stumbling tempo, perhaps chanting a little like Devo.
“Jackie Onassis” was their “big hit.” It starts off with a cymbal, and sleepily and jangley begins, as if part of a dream. It charges ahead with a confident stomp with some prog-guitar flourishes, mixing in dreamy oh-yeahs in time. The song ends with call and response oh yeahs between the singer and backing chorus.
“Cool Jerk” begins with a bouncy and Squeeze-like bass line…the song jitters along anxiously, and would be a fun song to dance to during a live set. It is repetitive, but in a fun, catchy and building way. There are breaks in the song, that still pound forward with a pulsing drum beat. The song is just a Isley Brother’s “Shout” or Checker’s “Twist,” requesting to do the popular dance along with the band as a soundtrack.
“Dolls” also feels like an early Chris Difford/Squeeze song, with some wonky sound effects, and methodical, Devo-ish singing. The song refers to dolls coming to life. It builds and grows, but stays along a very narrow path of musical diversity. The song feels like it wears out its welcome, looping alarm-like vocals that build in intensity, but doesn’t really evolve or capitalize.

“What Does Sex Mean to Me?” starts with a basic rhythm setting the tempo…this is filled with some classic lines like “Virgins Die Horny” and “I put my fingers to my tongue / I taste vagina” Really the song juxtaposes how other societies view sex versus how we/the singer view sex, with some quite political/moral topics amongst the reactionary lyrics. The song, with its anxious, jittery vocals, and repetitive chorus fits cleanly on the album, but it feels like, aside from the instrumental, complex music is traded in for a clear, intelligible platform.
“Marone Moan” starts out quietly, with a less neurotic vocal. It feels a little renaissance like, lofty world and roots music at first. Then it gets a little progressive as the vocals harmonize into a wind-swept cadence. The urgency grows with the pulsing guitar and ethereal “AAhhhhhh” and then it just…ends.
“Unba Unba” begins with a dark guitar line, and a steady drum beat, which creates a bit of a menacing back ally atmosphere. Unba is the stuttering start in the chorus for the work unbelievable. Before the final urgent verse, the vocals swirl into a whirlpool of syllables and notes. And the song, also repeating like an alarm, winds itself up to a sudden stop.
“Anne Frank Story” is their sad, slow ballad. It too, has a bit of a mysterious menacing tone, but the sullen mood is felt as the calm vocals sadly croon and shutter about the Anne Frank Museum. The drums are bombastic and striking. After 2 minutes, the song changes direction a bit, picking up a driving progressive pace to reset the scene, back to the sad reflective verse. It has a bit of a similar feel to the Hooter’s “All You Zombies” which came out 5 years later. The lyric that is repeated the most is perhaps “Time Warp At The Anne Frank Museum.” And the song seems to build and exit just as quietly as it began.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of the Tourists (although, I probably should have). Looks like intelligent concept new wave music from the abstract splatter-art display on their surroundings as compared to the "before" picture on the back. The paint seems to create a fun, energetic idea fromt he depths of banal monotony. Shows promise for an album from 1979.

Album Review: The Tourists were the band that immediately pre-dated the Eurythmics, with both Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart as dating members. Although the band was not their showcase, it produced some big singles. From the ashes of the band and their intimate relationship came the Eurythmics. The Tourists only really lasted for 3 years, and produced 3 albums to their name.

“It Doesn't Have to Be This Way” begins with a synth back drop, and driving, energetic guitar & bouncy bass. The song falls into a jangle-pop category, and it builds well. The catchy guitar hooks remind me of the pretenders (even if their debut was a year later). The song mixes a nice balance of rock with digital sterility.
“I Only Want to Be With You” is a Dusty Springfield cover, and was a #4 UK, #8 Aus, #83 US single. It continues with the chugging guitar and bass tempo. Annie’s vocals are bold and strong, with their familiar lush, deep key. The song is familiar, and just pushes the classic oldie structure up to a modern time, kind of like The Ramones. The guitar rings out in the chorus, creating a confident setting.
“In The Morning (When the Madness Has Faded)” starts with a neurotic organ, and psych, echoing vocals. It straddles the line between tedious jangle bands and 60’s psych garage bands. It is just an upbeat and hopeful pop song, with multiple sections that speed up and slow down, including a swirling, middle eastern breakdown in the end.
“All Life's Tragedies” begins with the same structure, chugging instruments, with a steady driving tempo. The vocals flow over the shifting notes. The chorus is slowed down, and melancholy, before being lifted back up again with the guitar. But overall there is sadness in the song, based on the inflection of the vocals.
“Everywhere You Look” has a Siouxsie Sioux gothic tone to the beginning, and key shrieking guitar instrumental hook. The rest of the song is a pleasant building new wave track, reminding me of Nick Lowe or Graham Parker with melody and composition.
“So Good to be Back Home Again” was a #8 UK single. It kicks in with a drum beat, and the music is fuzzy punk underneath harmonized, pop vocals. The organ returns for verse accents. This is a nice blend of punk electric guitars paralleling and taking turns with the new wave organ melody. The chorus is complemented with an “Ooo-Ooo-Ooo” vocal in support.

“Nothing To Do” kicks in with a simple jangly guitar hook. The vocals remind me of Marshall Crenshaw. The chorus is the song title sung in response/echo to each other, with a final, combined effort.
“Circular Fever” starts with a three chord chunky guitar hook, and is supported by a bass line that reminds me of the building verse of Born to be Wild. The vocals are combined together, in a shrill, warbly harmony of sorts. It follows the title, where the sections feature little circular hooks that play over and over again, slowly building, but constantly driving.
“In My Mind (There's Sorrow)” has a sort of anthemic, jangly arena rock guitar aesthetic at the beginning. The organ anxiously pulses beneath the steady tempo. The bridge breaks the momentum and slows things down, before it starts up again. The song features a short renaissance section toward the end that is unusual for the song’s style, but somehow fits in naturally. The song does drag out a little too long.
“Something In The Air Tonight” is a slow tempo’ed jangly song. It acts like a ballad or a slow dance with some bold, precise guitar chords. The song churns and like a whirlwind at the end, rocks out before it fades away.
“Summer's Night” starts with Mexican horns and vocals, but becomes a rollicking folksy sing-along. It returns to the section as an interlude between verses. The verses actually remind me of New Pornographers, with the way they are blended together.
