Unknown-ness: I had never heard of this band. I found 2 of their records in a dollar box, but decided on this one after simply reading it was a better / more popular record...but did not hear it at all. With a 1985 date, I assume this is smoothly produced pop with a bunch of synth effects in place of typical instruments.

Album Review: It is one part jangly pop, but also has a bit of a blue-collar pub rock edge, if only a small bit, underneath the mid-80's overproduction sheen. They possess standard nasally British vocals, and some Blue-Eyed, Mod-revival pop experimentation on a couple of the tracks with synthesized horns.

This is their first album, three years after Greaves and Lister formed the band and a handful of non-album singles. Two more albums followed, with the middle one being the big hit in the US (Weapons of Love), with some songs being featured in the 1987 sci-fi film The Hidden. They were on track to follow in the Jam's footsteps, but ended up coming off without their power and drive, and ended up succumbing to the era's Miami Vice soundtrack bands in the states, and never recovered back home. You can hear it quite clearly on the track "Is There a Solution," which is musically great until the Phil Collins like vocals and chorus hit.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this singer/songwriter. I'm guessing he's gonna be your average storyteller, unpretentious singer, that is part bar room open miker (miller lite can), part musician's musician (photo on back in the studio) trying to break the mold (based on the album title) but won't.

Album Review: The album is part Americana, Roots rock, and part revival of the style of Buddy Holly- pretty much the formula of any singer song writer trying to sound different. The only stand-outish track- and not really for good- is the album ending title track. It features what sounds like a live audience of folks with background conversational ambiance to a Blasters-like song with some yelps, whistles and claps. The audience also does a bit of  call and response with the chorus, reminding me of Chuck Berry's My Ding-a-ling live recording.

Sykes has had a long career in the music industry rollercoastering between performing and writing. He has performed solom accompanied many famous musicians, and was even in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers. He has also written many songs recorded by others like The Judds, John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rosanna Cash, Guy Clark, George Thorogood, Sissy Spacek, Mitch Ryder Rodney Crowell, and he co-wrote Volcano with Jimmy Buffett. He started out in 1968 after hitchhiking to the Newport Music Festival and was inspired by Arlo Guthie's perfomance of "Alice's Restaurant Massacree." He even performed the single B.I.G. T.I.M.E on SNL in 1980, in support of this album, which was released on Tom Petty's record label.

Unknown-ness: I've heard the name Spyro Gyra before but never in any genre context. I guess i always assumed they were like Procol Harum or 10cc (not sure why those two bands, as they are not really alike), perhaps because they have similar artwork sometimes, and were from the same general time frame. But really, i don't know what SG sounds like at all.

Album Review: Definitely a Jazz Fusion band, with its name coming from a green algae spelled Spirogyra. This album is certified Platinum as of 1987, and has strong charting success as does the single "Morning Dance," which has a nice blend of Caribbean elements with dance-able jazz.  The revolving door of musicians makes sense for a band as large and complex as Spyro Gyra, but the core has always been Beckenstein and Schuman. "Jubilee" incorporates some nice funk and jammy roots rock to a baseline of smooth sax jazz.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. This was one of the first TSM albums i got, so finally getting to the later letters. Per the promo sticker four of the first five tracks were potential singles. I like the sleek logoed "7," looking like a racing stripe, pasted on the black background. Simple, clean design, futuristic and mysterious with a little dangerous intensity. The band photo on the back, layered over the same logo gives a cold, archaic feel. I'm hoping the music taps into the future electronic aspects of the artwork, and this is a fun synth heavy new wave album.

Album Review: This is a very weird album. On one hand, there are a lot of fun time signatures and driving songs with keys and cold war synth effects. But on the other hand, the guitar and vocals are like a typical greasy, back alley Miami Vice power pop band of the 80's. Point in fact, their single "Heartbeat" found its way to be on Miami Vice (as well as 1986's film Manhunter).  And "Less Than Perfect" is featured in one of my favorite childhood films, Explorers. But back to the band: imagine Steve Perry fronting the Residents on the song "No Sorry" or occasionally sounding like Devo on "Let Me Use You" - but i would not classify that as their overall sound. "This Dark Hour" has a strong Police vibe. Mike Rutherford was a big help to the band on their first record, and he would have produced their second if it were not for his touring schedule with Genesis- a decision forced by MCA that ultimately led to the demise of the band under the forced misguided pressure from the label and production team.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but they look like another run-of-the-mill late 60's pop group trying to be the next big thing. They probably won't be unusual or break out of the light male vocal ensemble that really owes more to Jack Jones and other crooners more than the Beatles or the Kinks.

Album Review: Strings and light smooth vocals perpetuate the album along, but there are a few shining moments, like "Man Enough" has some drive and big band pop energy. And single Playgirl is a bit in the a Motown swing vibe. "Magic Island" almost has a solid pop backbone, but it loses all of its appeal as it's tries to appease parents with a light lofty orchestral production. This album would be a lot better if it were a lot simpler. But it can't escape the safe zone with production half in cohorts with Tom Jones or Mitch Miller, and one foot trying for the youth appeal. The Youtube link has more songs than what are on this album, and almost every non album track is better than the songs here. It looks like Jim Anderson only wrote 2 songs on here: They Call Her Sorrow & It Isn't So Easy...the rest are covers. Apparently, even the band was unhappy with this album, as their musical tendencies were more toward Hendrix, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, not bubblegum pop, but the record company had their name & ownership, and ran it into the ground.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks like moody new wave. Quite a Eurotrashy look mixed with British punk/new wave.

Album Review: So this is a Polish band that does not speak much, if any English. At first, the lyrics were translated to English and learned to be sung phonetically. Musically, they are a lot like the police...finding that fine line between ska and reggae that is basically just another branch of the new wave tree. And apparently they are still together, performing across Europe later this year if everything opens back up (2020).

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but saw it at a record flea market, and figured the content had to be good or at least interesting...80's bad girl vibe, but in a fashionable way, so assuming they will sound like a band Ex hex is trying to replicate.

Album Review: So they don't sound as heavy as I thought they would, kind of like a slightly heavier, rock version of the Go-Gos. The vocals have a fluttering like them, and like Corin Tucker (Sleater- Kinney). They were pioneers, even though that was not their intent, wearing catholic outfits and memorablia along side their genuine, non-offensive music. The original band only lasted a few years (broke up in 85) and had this one album, but they got to tour with legendary bands (Petty, Kinks, Ramones, Clash) and play legendary places. Although they were the first NJ all-girl band to get signed to a major label, they never connected or were promoted efficiently because it seemed the corporate rulers could not accept their "voice" before they ever heard it. SNL cancelled them based on potential backlash, and they were banned from Rhode Island based on one misinterpreted lyric in "God Made You For Me" that the church felt was calling god a woman. A new line up got back together in 2002 and have recorded a couple albums since.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, but from the cover, i think it looks like a hard core band, with the blotchy semblance of some sort of military person with a gun artwork, and the stenciled band name. But the 70's AOR looking portraits of the dude-band definitely give the band a light, friendly perception. The photo interpretation outweighs the artistic usage, so i'm going with the light, 70's AOR harmony-filled power pop over the artwork, which is probably just emphasizing the band name, with nothing more to read into it.

Album Review: This is their 6th album in 6 years (since '75), but they go back to 1965, and are still active today (2020).  It is the first to be produced without Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive). This album followed a greatest hits record, which was the best selling Canadian record of all time, reaching 6x-Platinum status. They are in the top five best selling Canadian bands of all time, and have won many awards, including the Juno for band of the year in 1980. The songs are definitely in the power-arena rock genre, which makes sense. By this time, they had the biggest Canadian record of all time, so they produced music for where they'd need to play. But they also power up some oldies styled pop tunes and modernize them. "Are You Still My Baby" sounds awfully familiar...perhaps I've heard it before, as it is not a cover. And "Dump That Creep" is downright fun driving (ans humorus) New Wave track.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. But based on the clothes, I imagine them to be a power pop gritty bar band trying to latch a little on the New Wave sound.

Album Review: This is the second of two records from the Columbus OH band that started playing in pubs and hoped for a career that never expanded beyond opening for bigger bands in the area. Singer Mimi was the main focus of the band, with strong vocals and a wardrobe popular of the time. Her vocals are reminiscent of popular 70's groups like Genya Ravan's of 10 Wheel Drive, and ranges from powerful to delicate for ballads. The music incorporated the rough and tumble back alley power pop, adding in keyboards to fit into the new wave movement with vocals that sound like Blondie on "Life & Change". And Gettaway sounds like it could be a Fleetwood Mac song.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but based on the huge metallic spaceship speeding away from earth cover art, i'm guessing this is going to be a Prog or Metal record.

Album Review: And i was quite wrong..i should have considered the amount of space disco coming out at the time, and realized this might have been a heavy on disco. It also breaks up the dance numbers with smooth, romantic R&B ballads (#3,6). Ultimately, this is classified as Detroit Funk. Lots of big horns and funky bass on the dancy tracks and lots of thick harmonies.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Blue Mink. But they look like a folky, southern bluesy band, like CCR or Allman Brothers with their denim band pict on the cover, and the beardy dude with the straw hat.

Album Review: The album, full with multiple covers, has a flower child, Woodstockian Hair feel to the majority of the album, They were originally designed to be a studio only instrumental band, but those layers slowly peeled away to where they just became a band. Apparently, this record came out at the peak, and begin of their downfall as a band, touring the US & adding members, and a shifting music culture as the blame. It was called Only When I Laugh on other versions, but is just self titled on this MCA-US release.

Unknown-ness: With a self titled album by a band called the bottles, almost anything can be expected. Cover art of the girl with a colorful dyed side pony tail may suggest a bit of an edge, with the obvious namesake bottle caps over her eyes bringing it back to a more obvious style. The malnourished dudes on the back, with hair taking up a third of the shot have a generic cool 70's vibe which could be Journey or Disco.

Album review: Bottles are basically a 2 person band, the two bros on the back. The first three tracks start off with a bang, very fun, poppy, melodic new wave songs, possessing elements of Squeeze and Graham Parker, but "Too Late to Dance" is a generic slow dance ballad, and the rest of the album takes a safer, radio friendly 70's pub vibe. "Elania" could be really punched up to be a great song by a current band like Ex Hex. Jefery Levy went on to become a Hollywood producer and lawyer, having written and produced the campy horror film Ghoulies, and directed SFW.

Unknown-ness: I feel like many bands tried to go the prog route via artwork of freezing themselves inside a flat square, ala Superman, as cover art. This is not done as precisely as that, but the lightning in the background and big hair does suggest this will be typical prog/hard rock. And Paul Stanley of Kiss producing things...the sound *could* be interesting.

Album Review: So the sons straddle the sounds of typical, generic hard rock with power pop elements, and even a little glammy at times...sure those are all neighboring genres with hands in each other's pies. Nothing on this record is really too memorable or stands out...nice harmonies, heavy guitars, and the opening track is the most glam-rock of the bunch. And its kinda funny that they have a chugging, driving song called P.U.N.K. that is basically a "get off my lawn" anthem to punks...or "Puny Under Nourished Kids / Painfully Un-Natural Kids." It arranges video-game type music to what sounds like a fast version of Chuck Berry's "Never Can Tell." Early names were Carot Time Cornucopia, The Fossils, Newer England, and Newer England's Newest Hitmakers.

Unknown-ness: I bought this record still wrapped in plastic with the letter in the above picture (claiming this was a free- remastered, resend from MCA to replace older copies with flaws)  obscuring the cover. I felt a little bad opening it after 30 years, but a still wrapped record is not as much fun. I imagine this will be simple southern AOR with a mix of pub rock and perhaps some blues. Seems pretty cut & dry, like previous bands I've reviewed like Beaverteeth or Cactus.

Album Review: Although this band, the Eddie Boy Band, never made more than one album, and split up after sound / quality differences, the members have gone on to play alongside or write many hits for greats. David Wolinski has played synthesizers on highly acclaimed albums for Michael Jackson and the Bee Gees. Mark Goldenberg became a session musician for the likes of Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Imbruglia, Chris Issak, Willie Nelson, Peter Frampton, and many more (and was also in the Cretones). And Josh Leo has written over 20 #1 country music songs, as charted on the Billboard Country listings.

“Oh So Hard” begins with a light hearted guitar, reminding me of Edgar Winter Group’s “Free Ride.” It then explores some prog-timed guitars and keyboards. The vocals are very southern soulful mountain man style. The song repeats back to the catchy guitar hook that lead off the song, and this is a solid 70’s jammy song. The instrumental almost goes off the rails, but it is reined back in with the start of the third verse, which gets a little gruffer.
“The Maze” starts with some Billy Joel piano, which is covered over with wailing guitar. The song becomes a bouncy ELO sorta song that dips a toe into Bee Gees disco, particularly with the harmonized backing vocals in the chorus. The breakdown before the instrumental is a bunch of “Doo-Dee-Doo-Doos.”
“Say Goodbye Babe” enters with a rolling drum beat, and a held guitar chord. The song evolves into a bouncy, light pub piano tune. The lyrics “work it out” lead the song into an electric guitar instrumental section. Two guitars then commence playing together.
“Come on Virginia (I Wanna Win Ya)” sounds like an old ragtime band playing on an island cruise ship. The vaudevillian, male vocal / barbershop groups of the 50’s must have played a heavy inspiration to the track. The la-la-la breakdown even has a barker in the background that sounds like it’s coming through an old radio set. The end of the track has muddled spoken crowd vocals, and other radio-show sound effects like a whirling slide whistle.
“Losin' Again” heads right back into a powerpop hook, layered with guitar and organ. Different vocals play in and out of timing with another, and they harmonize at the middle. The guitar and keys divert from each other for the instrumental breakdown. Near the middle of the song, the familiar chorus is changed up to follow a different melody. This is where the song resets with a mellow guitar led prog harmony. This transitions into a multi-part instrumental section that follows the two guitars on their vocal-like journey, which ultimately ends the song with the “First Call” bugle melody on guitar.

“Good to Have You Back Again” starts with a prog hook that turns into a slow swampy rock jam. Both facets of the song interact and standalone from each other at varying points of time.
“The Gambler” has a classic rock intro, almost immediately added to by a jovial, drunken piano, and the song takes a happy back water turn, perhaps a little like Van Morrison. The electric guitar powers through the instrumental at a high pitch, followed by a display of some slide guitar work by guitar 2. It includes a familiar melody that sounds like it is from the muppet show.
“Sixteen Ladies” starts off full force with a driving power pop number. The vocals are different here, more southern in tone, more like my memory of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night” again. The interchange of swampy pub rock and electric power pop finds a nice balance. Toward the end, the organ comes up out of the background to play a more important role in the song’s mood.
“Makin' Love to You, Babe” takes a step back to be more country-ish, with a slower pace, harmonica melody base, and a country guitar hooks in the background. The chorus is a harmonized group of male vocals, which is a little odd, considering they are all singing together “Would you like to be makin love to me, babe?”
“Mother Music” illustrates more of the band’s free-form prog rock ideals, with sweeping effects, and wha-wah keyboard sounds. The vocals are a little bluesy, especially mixed with the organ and bass line. The harmonized chorus brings comparison to the Bee Gees again. The instrumental section is that fine line between psychedelic and prog rock and it would make for a great laser light show.

Unknow-ness: I've never heard of the band, and with the Imagery of cacti bursting up through a city street, I imagine this is going to be a country spin on run of the mill rock music.Plus the double meaning in the name Knights, since cowboys are like Knights, and the city night-life is the backdrop on the cover, the double entendre supports the guess more. It is bright and colorful, so I don't expect the music to be low key or dull.

Album Review: Bandera only had the one album, and in its time, it did not receive that much popularity, but since then, a bunch of the Lore’s songs have been covered to gain more popularity by Tim McGraw (Illegal). Lore unfortunately passed away in 2013, and was perhaps more famous for his role as founder and president for life for the public interest group Citizens For a Wilder West. Many of the songs, they take the instrumental that usually bridges the second and final choruses and move it to end the song.

“Billy the Kid” begins with a speedy boot stomping bass dance beat. Like a sped up Johnny B Goode. The catchy chorus rings out with a harmony of vocals. The instrumental lets the country music side sine with slide guitar and tinny notes. Just as you think the song is going to end; it reboots itself for a final run through of the chorus. And the song presents a final fake-out before it stops hard.
“Loaded Gun” is slower and methodical. A slow head band of mystical prog fogginess; a little Led Zeppelin-like. After 3 minutes of changeless music, a computer like guitar lick changes the pace of the instrumental, and then an electric guitar whines out in support of the melody.
“Crazy You, Crazy Me” enters with a cymbal and steady drum beat. A T-Rex “Bang a Gong” guitar echoes in the background, and the pub room country theme takes shape. After the bones of the song play out, the jam band portion of the song takes over, as each instrument offers its uncalled for version of the melody.
“High Ridin' Mama” is a short little song with pub rock harmonic melodies and gritty guitar play. But it still has both feet imbedded in the country arena.
“Memories of Home” hits a more sentimental, drifting vibe musically. It floats side to side over guitar chords the ring out alongside a slow drum pace. Again, the first half of the song is a tight packed by the numbers rocking ballad, but the last minute is guitar showboating after interest in the song has been lost.

“Hello Texas” is a fun bouncy, upbeat choreographed western dance song you could see people dancing in time to at a small neighborhood pub. The song could have ended right at the 3 minute mark, but they decided to show off more guitar licks to end the track, rather than bridge the catchy chorus one final time.
“Illegal” was covered by Tim McGraw on his 2002 album. It brings a bit of a funky beat in the guitar timing. But when the vocals begin, it slinks back to a deep reminiscing verse. The chorus is layered with some nice harmonies, and is supported by prog-rock guitars. And after a crescendo of vocals and instruments, not to mention a quickened pace, the song should end, but instead, they wail out a minute and a half dueling guitar instrumental that gently fades out.
“Now That It's Over” begins with a heartbeat bass line, and a metal guitar hook fits neatly in the frames. The vocals start with a crying energy, set back from the front, and reminds me of a lot of 70’s middle America classic rock like what you’d find in Dazed and Confused. One guitar focuses on the main riff, and the second guitar takes the instrumental high ground.
“Old Rhymes & Photographs” enters like a lullaby, and continues like a bold middle school dance power ballad in the chorus.
“Blame it on the Full Moon” bleeds right in after some seamless point from the song before. It has a much more energetic tempo than the previous song, but it follows the same melody. There is much more glam rock teetering on country rock line walking here, sounding like T Rex’s more honky tonk songs, at least in the guitar. Again, just as the song should be over, and interest is lost on the basic melody, the instrumental stretches it out further...this time, bringing it back into a rushed version of the chorus. Which fades out before it hyperventilates.
