Unknown-ness: I believe i had heard of Betsy Spivak before I bought this in a used bin, just curious if the word of mouth recognition was worth the music. I can't remember what it was like...my mind is set that this will be flowery, folksy Lilith Fair / Indigo Girls singer-songwriter style of music.

Album Review: Betsy has a very light, folky singer/songwriter storyteller vibe, with mostly acoustic performances, and a little country slide guitar. Nothing stood out to me, apart from the sexual exploring charged lyrics of Alter Boy/Female Form, but 222 Ray St is an enjoyable, straight forward song.

Betsy's father is the cofounder of the old Electric factory in Philly, and she studied classical music at Temple, also in Philly. Her early years were spent half in her native Philly, and half in LA. Even when moving back to Philly, he stuff did not follow her for a bit, as she felt part of both worlds. But the LA life opened her up creatively, writing in traffic, and finding her voice

  • Harold Leventhal - Producer
Unknown-ness: I don't believe I've heard of the Weavers. Maybe, as they have been around a long time, and Pete Seeger is a familiar name. But I imagine this to be imagine this will be olde-timey vocal harmonizing songs, where instrumentation is but a non-showcased afterthought or simply to keep rhythm & melody. With a setlist of 21 songs, all performed live, and a bunch of familiar traditional titles, I imagine this will get a little samey, too.

Album Review: This was recorded for their Xmas concert at Carnegie Hall, so applause bookends the tracks. Hootenany would be an accurate portrait of their banjangley folk harmonies. Their musical choices are international and quite varied with the record split into 4 sections: Classic Songs, Tall Tales, History/Geography, and Peace & Good Will. Often, one member will recite the upcoming lyric before it is sung in order to encourage audience sing-a-long.

The highly influential folk band (pre-dating Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan; all were influenced by the Weavers) started as a political group, with Seeger and Hays together as Alamac singers, protesting WW2. In 1941,with Germany moving into Russia, the US sentiment changes to pro-war propaganda, and the band became a pitched entering the war until the US finally joined the Allies. The band officially organized in 1948, thanks to a music circle Seeger organized in his basement called People's Songs. As the Red Scare / McCarthy era began, Seeger & Hays were questioned as US Communists, both refusing to testify in their own defense, putting them under FBI surveillance, denying them television / radio performances, leading to the loss of their Decca record contract and demise as a band in 1953. They got back together and played Carnegie Hall in 1955, had success with the recording, and set up a tour through 63, with occasional reunions. Seeger left the band in 1958 over plans to record a tobacco commercial, which he was against due to their danger & feeling of selling out. Their first tv appearance since 1951 performed on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 67. They would have appeared on the Jack Paar show, but refused to sign a loyalty oath to the US against communism.  Hays passed in 1981, Seeger died in 2014, Gilbert passed in 2015, and Hellerman died in 2016.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band. This album is quite perplexing. It screams everything i'd like in an indie, hipster band...provocative album title, two girls & one guy band make up, cool kitschy indie cover and back photo, almost like a goofy & colorful Belle & Sebastian spread. But this is a live recording, so with out knowing their catalogue, does this capture tracks from previous albums, or is this one of their first releases, and it just works better live...also, only Ratshin plays guitar, so is the album just guitar and vocals? No bass, drums, or key/synth? My preconceived notion about the album is that I'll like it a lot as just enough mix of juvenile humor and fun indie pop melodies.

Album Review: One guitar and two or three angelic voices comprises the music for UB, but throw in high-brow toilet humor and witty envelope pushing topics, you have a folk band that could also be considered anti-folk with its lack of naivety. The lofty music and complex harmonies give the surface appearance of a simple jovial folk act. While it is interesting and captivating at first, this is not the sort of album that holds my interest and I would not come back to for multiple listens.

They had two basic periods of activity, 1981 - 1988, and then 1998 - present, where they have still been playing out over the past couple years with one personnel change: Kristen is no longer part of the band since 2007. This is the second of three albums from the first period: two of which were live recordings. The trio was formed in Seattle, but all went to Bennington College in VT.

  • Paul Reisler - Bass Dulcimer, Guitar (A Thousand Questions, Kid Pan Alley, Three Good Reasons, John McCutcheon, Holly Near, Si Kahn, Beth Nielsen Chapman)

  • Lydia Mills - Fiddle (Arlington Street Women's Caucus)
  • Bill "Smitty" Smith - Banjo
  • Rosie III - dulcimer on cover

Unknown-ness: I honestly don't know if this is a band or an album of random songs just played on a Trapezoid/dulcimer, or just some completion with cool cover art and font...because it is a VERY cool cover and font. Seeing the pics on the back & reading the notes, I imaging it is all instrumentals, of old time folk played on old time instruments, the dulcimer spotlighted. It looks like the "finger harp" we used to strum & play in elementary school music class. reading more of the back, the band makes their own instruments, including these dulcimers, so this might be pretty cool.

Album Review: Well, the description was not wrong, the instrument makers definitely have a knack for old tyme folk music going back to the Renaissance period. The range of their designed hammered dulcimers is quite good, as they themselves forged bass & piccolo dulcimers to fit the range of music in a full band.

Paul Reisler has been the one constant musician, with Sam Rizzetta perhaps being prolific / famous in his own right; still making instruments and recording albums (2020). Reisler has seen the band through many personnel changes, and played as Trapezoid for 25 years through 1995, reuniting in 2004 with their 1984 line-up. This is their first album. I read a little more and it seems Sarah Gregory and Bill Smith got married, and were together up to her passing in 2020.

  • Douglas Mark - Guitar (Redeye)
  • Dave Hodgkins - Guitar (Grains of Sand, Redeye)
Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but they look like your typical late 60's hippy, happy, shiny love band, so i'm guessing this will be upbeat bubblegum pop...maybe a little psych, too?

Album Review: So the album doesn't deviate much from it's cover image and genre. It will sometimes fall backwards on the ultra light bachelors vocal bands or loungey elements. Their name alone puts them solidly in the niche genre built around similar sounding bands, "sunshine pop." Their name was actually taken from the brand of snacks/crackers that shares the same name, and only materialized once they had a nationally charting single (Happy). They only lasted about 2 years recording 3 and a half albums, perhaps because the label greatly forced their creative hand in a different direction than what the band wanted.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but it looks like a knock-off version of the Grateful Dead, down to their logo with a boat that looks like a train in the gatefold. They look like nice enough mountaineering hippies, and i bet they did a lot of drugs. So I have a feeling this may be a proggy jam band, so focused on the music loops that it goes on forever.

Album Review: This is the immediately following, and due to contractual obligations; overlapping, band of The Blues Project. In fact, the first Sea Train album had to be released as The Blues Projects for those exact reasons. This and their first album are both named Seatrain, with the only difference is a space in the name between Sea & Train on the first record. This and their follow-up record were both produced by Beatles main man, George Martin, and this is the first post-Beatles project that he produced. They blend various genres of the time, going back to bluesy rock with Blues Project, adding in country bluegrass, fiddle band barn dance, roots rock, and some prog elements. It has a very renaissance mountain jug and string band folksy feel, but produced very well with talented musicians. Single "13 Questions," an alien abduction song from the alien's POV, broke top 50 on the charts, and has a little funk / pre-disco element to it, that reminds me a little of The Go! team.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but the packaging is odd, as you flip the record over, not from right to left to correctly view the back. From the cover art work, and the ransom letter font on the side A Front, and the multicultural + bagpipe cover on the back, i want to believe this is some interesting indie punk, but i believe it will be more college radio, jangley rock, based on the year.

Album Review: This is straight up instrumental, bagpipe heavy jazzy soundscapes. There is a little Asian influence and some middle eastern theme in the music too, so it does not always just carry a Celtic feel. On this record Marvin's March & Dee Dee... are both homages to African American culture. Most of the songs feel like jigs and ceremonial songs. The instrumentation is mostly performed on old world devices. They continued to divert to alternate directions, and after this album and the departure of two members, they headed into the direction of Jazz Fusion.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but they look like another run-of-the-mill late 60's pop group trying to be the next big thing. They probably won't be unusual or break out of the light male vocal ensemble that really owes more to Jack Jones and other crooners more than the Beatles or the Kinks.

Album Review: Strings and light smooth vocals perpetuate the album along, but there are a few shining moments, like "Man Enough" has some drive and big band pop energy. And single Playgirl is a bit in the a Motown swing vibe. "Magic Island" almost has a solid pop backbone, but it loses all of its appeal as it's tries to appease parents with a light lofty orchestral production. This album would be a lot better if it were a lot simpler. But it can't escape the safe zone with production half in cohorts with Tom Jones or Mitch Miller, and one foot trying for the youth appeal. The Youtube link has more songs than what are on this album, and almost every non album track is better than the songs here. It looks like Jim Anderson only wrote 2 songs on here: They Call Her Sorrow & It Isn't So Easy...the rest are covers. Apparently, even the band was unhappy with this album, as their musical tendencies were more toward Hendrix, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, not bubblegum pop, but the record company had their name & ownership, and ran it into the ground.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist. But the cover, with him taking on different stereotypes and forms to produce "funky folk flops" with a "can you believe this?" look on his face, i'm guessing this is not someone who takes these styles or cultures seriously or respectfully, and this is probably a joke / insult album.

Album Review: This is a comic record, which mostly pokes fun at counter culture and flower children via an out of touch sense of humor which would ring true with older folks worryin' 'bout them hippies. Bowman passed away in 2013, but was a disc jockey, singer & songwriter, and comedian. His career genre was country as he was the original DJ for "American Country Countdown" from 73-78, and he apparently helped Waylon Jennings get a start. There is really no singing on the album, it is jut Don saying some rhyming phrases over country-folk music, with elderly lines like "can you believe that, and aw shucks chuckles at his own "unbelievable" realizations. From the loose parody of  House of the Rising Sun as the perspective of a nosey neighbor to a community house of folk singers and hippies, like a redneck tea-bagging trumper's version of Tom Wait's "What is He Doing in There?" to the outright hatred of hippies in the obnoxious "The San Francisco Scene" and "Streets of San Francisco" the album is just as terrible in its intolerance as well as the storytelling. Perhaps they assumed that hippies and their culture was a passing phase, that looking back at the scene would put this album ahead of it's time, alas, it's just grandpa yelling get offa my lawn. Or maybe the prejudice was part of the charm, and this album is trying to show folks how disrespectful people come off? I really doubt it.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this artist, but as he does everything on his own, I imagine this to be some mopey bedroom indie tracks with a bit of an Americana style, based on the dark, small town artwork.

Album Review: There is a little reverb in most of the songs that give it a psych effect, while at the root, most of the tracks feel like 50-60's oldies with simple rhyme and musical patterns ("Acceptance" & "You Don't know Me At All"). Some of the tracks have a country-era Ween-demo-like quality to them, as they are produced in an echoing lofi sense. The B side has more produced songs, and first track "Chips Cashed In" sounds especially Ween-like, with vocals somewhere between Aaron Freeman and Matthew Sweet. Overall, there is a quiet, calm and subdued environment created by these songs: relaxed, but not without worry or a looming sense of sadness. Like leaving for vacation, and not remembering if you turned off the stove.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band / artist. He looks wacky, and the play on words with his name and island things, i assume this is going to be a silly, embarrassing jokey record full of puns and bad dad jokes. The back image does nothing to settle my hesitation. But perhaps there is some value within these songs, because i always say, there are typically at least two people that are all-in on the production of each record released.

Album Review: There is a good mix of styles here, all within a folk genre...Dylan and Van Morrison esque on the A side, to bluegrass and funkiness with an experiment in echoing reverb to start off the trad."Stranger Blues." "Two Rivers in MT" is an ambient instrumental that successfully mimics water flowing in a stream, and it oddly breaks up the album's momentum. On a personal note, i'm a big fan of Ween, so it's nice to hear one of the 12 Golden Greats, Bobby Ogdin, playing on another album.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I assume it's some high concept art band, perhaps post punk, or something like Wire.

Album Review: Pop art is a gentle slice of jangly college radio pop music. Like light Michael Stipe meets Michael Penn songs, almost Medieval-New Age at time. Craig Aaronson went on to manage and produce some popular late 90's actsd like Jimmy Eat World & Less Than Jake, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Bran Van 3000. Their record label was self-run.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I like the pink & black color scheme, and the font of the album title gives a little of a punk/alternative vibe.

Album Review: This album is terrible. Very awkward and embarrassing style attempts with cringe-worthy lyrics and dated jests. The one stand out track "Too Smart to Have Fun" has a good melody, and is not a horrible song, and the Campaign-Prezident (ugh, the "z") suite has some interesting ideas and concepts about running & voting for a 3rd party candidate. Those two points gave the album an extra point on its rating. The synth / drum machine effects on Attaboy and Yuppie Drone are just horrendous Devo and rap style parodies respectively (although "Attaboy" has a solid They Might Be Giants worthy lyric "Here at the "department of redundancy" department). The worst Weird Al songs are leagues ahead of anything on this album. Makes a little more sense that they were on Dr. Demento.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of Blue Mink. But they look like a folky, southern bluesy band, like CCR or Allman Brothers with their denim band pict on the cover, and the beardy dude with the straw hat.

Album Review: The album, full with multiple covers, has a flower child, Woodstockian Hair feel to the majority of the album, They were originally designed to be a studio only instrumental band, but those layers slowly peeled away to where they just became a band. Apparently, this record came out at the peak, and begin of their downfall as a band, touring the US & adding members, and a shifting music culture as the blame. It was called Only When I Laugh on other versions, but is just self titled on this MCA-US release.

Unknown-ness: Never heard of the Shirts. Like the simple still life with assumed action cover art, and the sizable 6-person band on the back looks like Dexy's Midnight Runners, so I'm guessing this might be a folky, jazzy pop sort of record.

Album Review: The album has a folky, late 60's Woodstock vibe to it mixed in with a little theatrical / musical elements. It feels kinda bland like a lot of introspective jangley college rock records, save the songs Teenage Crutch and Lonely Android, which have a faster, vibrant feel that i could see being played at CBGBs: the club they got their big start opening for acts like Television and Talking Heads. Nowadays, the (ex) member most recognizable is singer Annie Golden, who recently appeared as the silent inmate on Orange is the New Black. She has been a more prolific actor through out her career, also appearing in Hair, Cheers, and 12 Monkeys as well.

  • Dave Dexter Jr. - Producer for USA
Unknown-ness: At the time of purchase, one of my earlier TSM buys, I had not heard of them. But I expected this to be a folky vocal group, similar to We Five, which I had already bought & listened to. Was hoping for a tinge of Herman's Hermits or other upbeat fun music, but not expecting too much of that.

Album Review: As expected, this is a collection of folky vocal group songs, that comes close to church choir quality. Some of the banjo-folk arrangement, like This Land is Your Land push them to the realm of country. And although the harmonies are strong, and the vocals are well highlighted, the overall style is a little tedious and very dated to my opinion.

Unknown-ness: I never heard of this band, and have no idea what to expect. Will it be chamber style ensemble music? It says Rock & Roll, but what is their definition of that style? The cover art & photo location makes them look like a wedding band playing classical music in full rock band uniforms, but that begs the question, what could that sound like?

Album Review: This 5 man band has taken composer Manos Hadjidakis (never heard of him either), and put lyrics over 8/10 of his songs, which was to become a film score (was never made). Some sound like Israeli traditional scores, some are just folky, and some are classical music with male vocal choirs over top. Kemal sounds like a klezmer version of Nightmare Before Christmas b-sides.

Unknown-ness: I've never heard of this band. From the artwork, it reminds me of Terry Gilliam's Monty Python opening, so I imagine the music will not be serious, and perhaps even comical in nature...or maybe just really drug influenced (psychedelic).

Album Review: The album is a strong mixture of folk, psych, power pop, and spaced out jamming. Lots of Beatles & Kinks inspiration. The band was from California, but moved to Quebec before recording this record. Funny thing, was the record was not meant to be the Wacker's third album, but was supposed to be a side project for the creative force. Once Elektra heard the songs, they pushed for the production as a full Wackers album (not The Incredible Duck Brothers). The recordings were also influenced by Monty Python cast members hanging out with the band while recording in the studio for two of the six weeks (MP was on their first North American tour).

Unknown-ness: Never heard of this band, but I really like the cover art and backing photo artwork. Makes me think it will have an earthy, folksy feel, but still have a worldy, and interesting intelligence about it.  I'm expecting a Los Lobos meets Half Japanese feel.

Album Review: So the Schramms, originally a placeholder name when they found out their previous name was already in use, have a lot of ties to Yo La Tengo’s very early years. Founding and namesake member Dave Schramm left Yo La Tengo after their first album and many other band mates were involved with the early years as well. Their US distribution was through Rough Trade, which coincidentally folded just as they were beginning their first album push.

“Walk to Delphi” is a county rocking song with exaggerated, drawn our vocal syllables. It never really deviated from its pace or tempo, only building a little to go into the chorus. The instrumental at the end relies heavily on country style, mixed with rock, to make the definitive alt-country style.
“Out of the Earth” continues with the twangy vocals, and a slower story-song style, with slide guitar, quiet backing vocals, and harmonica instrumental section.
“Living in Confusion” is light, and features wood block percussion. The long vocal notes rise and fall, offering a defined country style. The instrumental at the end features slide guitar heavily.
“Letdown Later” is all acoustic guitar in the beginning. Then it launches into a jangley stomper with a defined verse-chorus structure. The instrumental features a shrill keyboard section that honky’s up the tonk (this sounded like a good description in my head).
“It's Not What She Wants” is a slower ballad, relying on organ-like notes held. It picks up in energy after a minute goes by, and continues the upward momentum with an almost rocking out chorus. Once it finds the hook and momentum, it rides it out for the rest of the song.

“Big Stink” starts side two as a theatrical western instrumental, with an upbeat tempo and plenty of slide guitar and organ in the latter part of the song.
“Everytime” shuffles along with a quick drum beat, sort of like the tempo of a train. Jangly guitar and drawn out vocals make up the rest of the songs motivation. The momentum is held though out the whole song, until the train makes it to the destination, and the instruments are peeled back
“The Way Some People Die” is a harmonica heavy, jangly singer-songwriter tune. The chorus melody is catchy, reminding me a little of the Violent Femmes (and the Bluebells), as it builds. It’s probably the most approachable and accessible song on the album.
“Number Nineteen” is a slowly building song with a swaying, sing song melody, and dual harmonicas. It kinda makes me imagine what John Linnell (of They Might Be Giants) would sound like singing country. The instrumental section slows down to a near-stall, before guitar kicks it back into gear. This song is more folky than country.
“Gusano Verde” starts as a double dose blast of chaotic, echoing rums and guitar. Then a slower, heel dragging section that also comes off as very cinematic, rolls along, kicking up dust in a small western town’s dirt road and blowing it into mini tornados. The instrumental continues along, with peaks and valleys of emotional and somewhat progressive musical sections until it just gives out.
“Of All the Souls” wraps up the album with acoustic guitar, and sloppy lyrical presentation that hits at drunkenness. It is very folky in execution, and a church organ kicks in about the 2 minute mark to finish out the song and album.
